Westpac is now offering a program where both the College and College families can benefit from a new Home Loan Partnership. BDC staff, families and carers are invited to consider this new opportunity. New customers to Westpac will be eligible for the Total Financial Care Package which includes discounts and reduced premiums on a range of banking products such as Home and Investment property loans, transaction and savings accounts, credit cards, general and life insurance products. Details will be made available upon request. Trailing commissions to the College from Westpac from this partnership will go to the P&F, and funds will be spent on facilities for our students. Westpac is currently running a home loan promotion, whereby clients can receive $1,000 cash back for new loans over $250,000. If you are interested in knowing more about this program and how you and the College might benefit, please click the red Westpac logo on the top of the school’s webpage. I am pleased I can say that we have had final government approval for the COLA project. We expect to be able to sign a contract with FM Glenn, our builder within the next week or so. Once that is done, they will start work as soon as they can. I hope to see construction underway by the start of next term. Last weekend, St John’s Anglican church in Coffs Harbour held a ‘BDC at St John’s’ weekend. I spoke at each of the 6pm, 7am and 9am services, where I outlined the school’s history; our place as a ministry unit of the Diocese of Grafton; our academic credentials; our mission; and the community service programs we run. There was a solid contingent of students present, including members of the Year 3 choir. Many thanks to Mr Condon and Mrs Crismale for their time and work with the choir at the 9am service on Sunday. The congregation was very impressed with our students, and especially our young singers. We have been blessed with magnificent winter weather in this last week of semester. This has been a great backdrop for all of the exciting end-of-term events. The Secondary Athletics carnival was held at BCU stadium on Monday. It was a great success. I was pleased to see the enthusiasm of the athletes. There were some very talented athletes on display. We will certainly have some strong performers at the NCIS athletics carnival in Term 3. The Primary School hosted rugby and soccer players from Trinity Grammar in Sydney, and the Senior Primary athletics carnival was held on Thursday at school. It was a terrific carnival, and my thanks go to Mr Webber and Mrs Hilton who organised the day (and the Secondary event) so thoroughly. The House Shout in the Secondary School was a wonderful edition to the school calendar. It was a great way for all members of the Secondary School to participate in a musical event – many for the first time. Many thanks to our Heads of House and Tutors for their dedication to the task of getting the houses ready for the extravaganza. It really was a great snapshot of the mood of the school this week. On Thursday evening, I attended the Year 11 Drama production “Engine”. Based on the story of a terrible road tragedy near Byron Bay in 2006 in which four young lives were lost, the play had a poignant message. With its mixture of comedy and pathos, the play certainly kept the audience engaged. Congratulations to Mrs Cooper and Ms Gudgeon for their work in preparing the Year 11 Drama students for this production, and especially to Jordan Betts, Sharni McHeyzer, Patrick Diffey, Hannah Luke, Huon Hannaford, Wil Ashley, and Callum Small for their outstanding performances. I was very pleased to receive letter from Professor Graham Davies, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at UNSW telling of the success of three of our most recent graduates who have been awarded various scholarships – Max Hastings (Leighton Holding Engineering Rural Scholarship); Rory Clifford (Faculty of Engineering Rural Scholarship); and Tye Fraser (Rio Tinto Mining Engineering Scholarship). It is a testament of the rigour of our academic program at BDC to see our former students doing so well at one of our top universities. As I mentioned last week, Monday, 16 July, is a staff professional development day. Understanding that holiday day care is an important issue for working families, we are offering OHSC to Primary school children (and Year 7 children if parents prefer). PLEASE BOOK YOUR CHILD’S PLACE BY FRIDAY, 13 JULY. Go to ‘Events’ on the school website to find the application form. I wish all of our students a happy and safe holiday. Year 12 students know the importance of maintaining a regular study program during the break. Their Trial HSC examinations are looming. Good luck! FROM THE PRINCIPAL Alan Ball Principal

holiday Time is Family Time

YEAR 10I have been hearing many positive reports regarding the work experience that our Year 10 students were involved in last week. I had the opportunity to visit a number of our students over this time and they were all enjoying their working lives over this short period of time. Thank you to the students, the host businesses and Mrs Robyn Crisp, Careers Counsellor, who was responsible for much of the organisation.

StAFFIng tERm 3Next term, there will be some staff members of the Sedondary school away on long service leave. Mr David Findlay and Mr Bruce Champion will be away for the whole term. Ms Ketrien Meulenbroeks will be Acting Head of PDHPE for this time and Mrs Barbara Towers will be here for Mr Champion. Mrs Kathy Ross will act as Head of Sutherland House for Ms Meulenbroeks.

HOLIDAYSI hope that all families enjoy the holiday period and that all students return in Term 3 refreshed and ready to learn. Year 11 and 12

Now that the holidays are here there will be more pressure than usual on some families to continue to get along. Arguments about little Sara going into big brother Jono’s room, about whose turn it is to do the washing up and about which show to watch on television are common arguments in families along with a string of other complaints. This is normal behaviour in families, and someone once told me arguments in families are good practice for getting along with people in the outside world.

Setting clear expectations as well as presenting warm and caring communication is very important for parents. Building healthy relationships and strong family ties can result from effective communication and help everyone in a family to support each other. Discussing issues as a family can encourage children as well as adults to solve problems creatively. Having a chance to express needs in a positive way encourages healthy communication, support and cooperation.

Parents can role model staying calm in difficult situations as well as giving attention and importance to issues within the family. Remember that how you say something is as important as what you say. This does not mean that there will be no conflict in a family but it is the way that it is handled that makes for better understanding.

Making time to relax and doing fun things together as a family helps to develop strong family relationships. This may not always be easy, we have busy lives and parents are often tired after a gruelling day or week at work, but a little bit of effort will pay off in the long run when you have children who want to spend time with the family. My greatest joy is when my grown up children come home and want to spend time with their dad and myself.

Use this holiday time to strengthen family bonds, to spend time together having fun and relaxing, and we look forward to seeing your happy students next term.

chaPlain’s chaTWe have been blessed with great Coffs Coast weather throughout this last week of term and everywhere I look the College has been a buzz of excitement. I have witnessed rehearsals over the past week and the final productions of International Day from Year One, Dance Competitions in Junior Primary, wonderful costumes and very creative students who have entertained us with their talent.

Our Secondary students were involved in the most amazing competition for the best House Shout and I compliment them on their wonderful courage and performance in their Houses. I even found myself tapping along to some of those tunes from the past. What a festive time of coming together for Foundation Week, where we celebrate the College’s birthday and strengthen our community in thankfulness to God, our sure foundation.

From the words of Isaiah 28:16; So this is what the Sovereign LORD says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who trusts will never be dismayed.”

The foundation of Bishop Druitt College is based on Christian vision and values; we value our Anglican Foundation through optimism, tradition, inclusiveness, service, compassion, tolerance, hope and faithfulness. As you prepare for the 3-week break I pray that you and your family will find some time to stop and spend some time in the stillness whilst surrounded by the busyness of life.

Throughout our journey may we grow and reap the good harvest as we too discover Jesus together.

Peace

From The head oF PrimaryStAFF nEWSToday we said farewell to Mrs Patricia Bordignon and Mrs Sarah Gale. I thank them both for their dedication to their students and their professional approach to their work. Ms Marlene Evans will be taking Long Service Leave in Term 3. We look forward to Ms Sharon Habgood and Mrs Rebecca Ireland’s return from Maternity Leave next term and to Mrs Lorraine Jeff’s return from Long Service Leave.

PORtFOLIOSStudents will have brought home their Semester 1 portfolios. If you have any concerns about your child’s progress after having gone through this report, please make an appointment to meet with your child’s class teacher. Please also remember to return the portfolios after the holidays. They will be returned to you to keep at the end of the year. Children who arrived at the school in Term 2 will not have received a portfolio. This reporting period runs from Term 1 until approximately halfway through Term 2, and it is obviously difficult for teachers to accurately report on children when they have only had a few weeks to get to know them. I encourage parents of these children to make an appointment to meet with your child’s class teacher if you have not already done so.

AtHLEtICS CARnIVALWell done to all the Senior Primary students who participated in the carnival on Thursday. The age champions will be announced early next term. Congratulations to Kngwarreye on winning this year’s Athletics shield. Thank you to Mr Webber and Mrs Hilton for all the work they put into organising this event.

tRInItY COmBInED PREPS tOURThank you very much to the families that hosted visiting students from Trinity Grammar School, during their recent tour. This tour provided an excellent opportunity for our students to compete against quality opposition. Congratulations to our Rugby team on their hard fought 22-15 win, and to our Soccer players on their 4-3 victory.

BDC SUnDAYThank you to all those students who attended the St John’s service last Sunday and who sang so beautifully.

HAPPY HOLIDAYI wish all members of the Primary School community a happy and refreshing holiday. Please remember that school begins on Tuesday 17 July. Primary staff will be undertaking a THRASS (Teaching Handwriting Readings and Spelling Skills) refresher course on Monday 16 July. OSHC is available for those families who need it, but I suggest you book early.

students and their families should have received detailed requirements of work for this time. If you have not seen this yet, I would advise contact with the Secondary office as soon as possible. This was emailed to all families and hard copies distributed via your child’s Tutor Group teacher. Year 12 students cannot afford to have three weeks away from study over this time. Only one term left Year 12! Please note that students return to school on Tuesday 17 July due to staff professional development on Monday 16 July.

This term, our Year 1 classes have been exploring the ways people from different cultures celebrate special occasions. The students have been investigating a special celebration from a particular country and learning why the occasion is so special to these people. They have been learning about the food, music, dance and costumes used for the celebration and the special events that take place. Our unit came to an end this week with our own celebration of the wonderful work the students have done this term and a special parade to show off our ‘floats’ that were created throughout the term. Many thanks to the parents who offered their time to help us prepare for our parade.

On Thursday 14 June, several classes in the Primary School were lucky enough to be introduced to the instruments of the brass family at an interactive workshop. Our current BDC brass instrumental teachers, Lisa and Gergely Malyusz, performed some well-known pieces and encouraged students to reflect on their current knowledge of the instruments. Students were also provided with the opportunity to experience playing the trumpet, trombone, and tuba.

“I liked having the experience to try the instruments because if you don’t try it, you don’t know if you like it or not” - Luca (3S)

“”I liked the vibrating sensation.” - Alex (3M)

JUnior Primary dance concerTJunior Primary students had a wonderful time on Wednesday afternoon, entertaining their family and friends with our annual Junior Primary dance concert. All the students have been participating in dance as part of our Sport program for Term 2. Each class chose a theme for their performance and practised tirelessly throughout the term so they could present their dances to an audience as a celebration of all their hard work. There was lots of colour, fun and happy faces as the students displayed their moves and talent. Thank you to all the parents who assisted with costumes and for coming along and being our audience on the day. A big thank you must also go to Mr Penny for organising the sound and for being our compere.

To prepare for writing narratives, the children in 4M wrote a short descriptive passage about a day at the beach.

The first day of summer the burning bright sun was gazing down on the salty water of the sea. Jessica and Neli were begging their mum and dad to go to the beach and finally they agreed. When they got to the beach the girls slowly walked down to the water with their surfboards. As soon as they started surfing it started to pour down with rain.

Annelies Bleechmore (4M)

It was a hot, sunny day at the beach. The sun was shining brightly – in fact it was the hottest day of the summer. Ryan, who was curious, sat on a large rock staring at the water. Then he noticed a very bright blue light. It was a stone! He walked slowly towards it and bent down. As soon as he touched it he heard cracking. He looked and was shocked to see it was frozen.

Sam Isles (4M)

The sun was very hot and harsh. The waves were huge and crashing roughly on the rocks below. Dad said it was the best day to go surfing, so we grabbed our boards and hopped in the car. When we got to the beach we saw someone riding the best and the biggest wave of the day. Suddenly someone came in from behind and smashed him off his board.

Sam Parkes (4M)

4P learnt about different types of adjectives (numbering, describing and classifying) and how we order them in sentences to describe nouns.

grade oF The week - year 4The Mysterious Shadow

On a cold, freezing night in 1998, the whipping wind was blowing in Canada, yet there was no movement at all. Ruby, who was curious, loved to explore. She especially loved to explore the dark, lonely caves because she found lots of things that other people wouldn’t find.

She saw a shadow, but it disappeared. She saw it again, and it disappeared again. Then she saw it one last time and out of the dark came a little frightened dog.

The dog seemed sick. He was dying. So Ruby took him home and gave him a warm bath. He still didn’t seem any better, so she made him a bed with an electric blanket and three woolly blankets.

In the morning, he felt much better, so they went to the park and the dog had a run. Ruby thought to herself, “This dog needs a name”, so she called him Rover. When it was time to leave, they went to the shop and got some vegies, bread and juice. Back at home they had lunch. After lunch, Rover jumped on the trampoline and went swimming in the pool.

The next day, they went to the zoo and Rover saw lots of animals such as lions, monkeys, hippos and penguins. They stayed at the zoo for a few hours. Then they went home and stayed there for the rest of their lives.

What a huge term! The staff and students of music at Bishop Druitt College have been involved in The Samba Experience, Gene Peterson, The Kalamunda Youth Big Band, Coffs Harbour & District Eisteddfod, assembly performances, Piano Soiree, Brass & Woodwind Soiree, String Soiree, HSC Music Enrichment weekend, auditions and commencing production of the musical, to name a few.

Our ensembles are continuing to grow in strength and ability – a big thank you to staff and members of Primary Training Band, Primary Performance Band, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Middle School Band, Guitar & Bass Band, Superstrings, Senior String Consort, Senior Choir, Avison, Concordia and Brass Quartet!

With a strong and established String program and growing Wind and Brass student numbers, there is an opportunity to widen our ensemble program, with the introduction of a Symphony Orchestra.

It has been my pleasure in the past to be involved with school orchestras over many years. With the excellent student String resources, largely as a result of Louise Ray’s wonderful work over the past 5 years, we are in a position to introduce such a group.

In conjunction with Ms Ray, the Orchestra will meet during the Tuesday 8:00am time-slot. This has traditionally been the Strings Consort rehearsal time.

More experienced Wind, Brass and Percussion students may apply to be part of this new ensemble. Most concert band students will be eligible. The major difference between the Concert Band and Orchestra will be the lack of Saxophones. For students to be prepared for the orchestra commencing, sheet music for students will be available from the music office next week.

The first rehearsal for the Orchestra will be on Tuesday 17 July at 8:00am in Music room 1. Students will need to speak with Mr Condon regarding their involvement.

Early in Term 3, I will be calling a meeting of the Friends of Music. This meeting will look at ways to raise money for the purchase of 2 Timpani Drums, and other Percussion instrument. These instruments are vital for the Orchestra, and will also be used on the Concert Band. Timpani drums are approximately $3,500 each.

Coles Sports For Schools is still happening. You can start collecting your vouchers at Coles Supermarkets from 13 June. A collection box will be in the Library and also in the Sport Administration office. For every $10 you spend in store you will receive one voucher. Last year the BDC community collected an enormous number of vouchers, which were then exchanged for a large amount of sporting equipment for the students. This is for Primary and Secondary students. Please invite all your family friends to collect.

Recently five students representing the BDC Equestrian Team travelled out to Coonabarabran to brave the elements (rain, mud and cold) to compete in the North West Equestrian Expo. There were 750 riders competing over the five days of competition. Our riders competed in the ODE (One Day Event – Dressage, Showjumping and Cross Country Jumping), Showjumping, Sporting, Hacking, Dressage, Stock Horse Challenge and Sporting. Unfortunately the Polocrosse and Team Penning were cancelled due to wet conditions.

These riders represented the school demonstrating excellent attitudes both individually and as a team, and they came home with great results.
