The week had two highlights. In Secondary, it was the valedictory celebrations for our Year 12 students. In Primary, it has been the very exciting EYE Festival. I have had a bird’s eye (and ear!) view of the EYE festival from my office of the Primary ‘Time Warp’ as it unfolded during the week. It was terrific to see our young students have so much fun as they danced, sang, and acted through a variety of performances. The Primary musical that was the culminating event of the EYE Festival ‘Hoodwinked’ was excellent. I really enjoyed seeing so many students involved. Congratulations to all who performed or prepared our performers in this exciting annual event in our Primary School. A school’s soul is evident in the way it celebrates the departure of its graduates. The poise and dignity of our leavers this week spoke volumes for the soul of this place. Beginning the week with a retreat at Opal Cove, our Year 12 students were able to reflect on their time at BDC. Michael Crossland was their guest speaker, and he delivered a moving and inspirational message to these young men and women. They returned to school on Tuesday, ready for their valedictory celebrations. The induction of new College Leaders saw leadership batons change hands. On Wednesday, we enjoyed a rousing final chapel service where each student was given a DVD of the year group. The Valedictory Assembly saw our last formal event held in the Green Room. In a long, but enjoyable ceremony, we celebrated the end of school with our Year 12 students. The icing for our Year 12’s was their Formal and Valedictory Dinner held at the Novotel, Pacific Bay, last night. Our Year 12’s finished their formal days of schooling in a dignified, but ebullient fashion. When many other schools live in fear of the banal high jinks of some of their leavers, we can be especially proud of our young men and women as they move to their next adventures in life. There are many people I could thank for the superb week that has been, but would surely omit someone if I tried. That said, I must thank Mrs Sue O’Connor and Mr Paul Driscoll for their effort in making this a special last week for our Year 12 students. From the Primary perspective, I offer this special thanks to Mrs Sarah Stokes (nee Scott) for the energy and enthusiasm she devoted to ensuring the EYE Festival was such a success. Congratulations to Mr Graeme Naftel, who has been appointed Head of Junior School at the Australian International School Malaysia. Graeme has done a tremendous job as Head of Primary at BDC, and his appointment to his new role in Kuala Lumpur is a great reward for his efforts leading our Primary School. Graeme, Wenche and sons Jonas and Marius, will move to Malaysia in January. Today was the last day at BDC for Mr Brendan Pitman, who leaves to go to Anglican Church Grammar School (Churchie) in Brisbane as Assistant to the Head of Senior School. I have previously written about Brendan’s contribution to the College. We wish him every success in his new role. Congratulations to Liam Spears (11) and Lochlann Moran (7) who competed at the Queens NSW Rifle Shooting competition last weekend. Liam won Gold medals at 30m, 60m & 90m in C Grade as well as achieving a Silver medal for Juniors. Whilst not medalling, Lochlann gained some terrific experience from the competition. Congratulations also to Romany Seemann (9) who achieved outstanding results in the NSWCIS Secondary Athletics carnival in Sydney earlier this week, winning Gold in the 3000m and Bronze in the 1500m. Breaking news is that two of our Year 12 students have been recognised for their fine performances in one of their chosen subjects for the HSC. Joe Ashley has been nominated for possible inclusion in ENCORE, a collection of the best musical talent from this year’s state-wide cohort of Year 12 Music students. Rebecca Dixon has been nominated for possible inclusion in CALLBACK, which is the Dance equivalent of ENCORE. This is terrific news! On a far less pleasant note, the funding issue with the NSW Government that I have raised with parents is far from resolved. Your letters of protest have certainly caught the government’s attention. The Association of Independent Schools, the peak body representing us, is working very hard to wring a better outcome for our schools from the government. I will keep you apprised of any developments. Reminder: One term’s notice is required if your child is going to leave the College. Advice must be received before the start of next term. We have had a wonderful week of celebration at school.

celebraTions!What a wonderful week of celebrations we have had at Bishop Druitt College. As I sit in Mrs. Lisle’s office this week I have been able to be involved in the colourful activities going on in the Primary area with their EYE festival celebrations. I have heard musical performances, seen dramatic displays and witnessed wonderful expressions of creativity. The children have embraced their ‘Time Warp’ theme and learned all the moves. I have never seen and heard more laughing and smiles then I have this week in the Primary School. Congratulations to all the staff involved in this glorious week! There is so much preparation involved in a weeklong event like this and from a parent of Primary school students, can I just say THANK YOU on behalf of the kids and parents.
At the other end of the spectrum, we farewelled our Year 12 students in a week of celebrations as well. The week started on Sunday where the students gathered at Opal Cove for a final Retreat. The program looks at where the students have come from, where they are now and where they think they might be going in the future. All the Year 12 students embraced the experience and came away with a new-found forgiveness of each other and bonds that will never be broken.
Upon returning to school they have experienced an End of Term Service, a breakfast hosted by year 11, a joyous concert and then the final Farewell Assembly. The highlight of the assembly of course being the Kindy students singing a song (that they practiced all term!) to the year 12 students and handing them a colourful flower!Finally the Valedictory Dinner at Pacific Bay last night. What a wonderful celebration that was, and what a fitting way to say goodbye to the 95 Year 12 students – many of whom have been here since Kindergarten!
According to the Wikipedia definition, the term ‘Celebration’ means “ A community gathering to celebrate something in particular” What a community we have and what celebrations we have enjoyed this week!

This week has been the culmination of many years at our College for Year 12 students. In many ways it has been an emotional roller coaster as they have taken time to reflect on the blessings of the past years and all that our College community life has meant to them. There will be a sense of trepidation for many as they prepare for exams looking to the future with uncertainty. ‘Tomorrow’ can at times seem daunting. I think the advice of Abraham Lincoln is quite pertinent at this point in time, “The best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time”. There are many wise sayings from a variety of people that gives us an insight into the future.
“The future is something, which everyone reaches at the rate of 60 minutes an hour, whatever he does, whoever he is.” C.S.Lewis
“Without forgiveness, there’s no future.” Desmond Tutu

Singer/songwriter Carlos Santana’s reflection is very insightful; it is easy to be a prisoner of the unknown, whether it be the past or the future. The prophet Jeremiah tells us, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11
For those who are preparing to move off into a new direction in life, there are these reassuring words; “Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity.” 1 Timothy 4:12
For all of us there is a future. Remember Jesus is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. You don’t have to worry about the future when you have Jesus in your life today. I pray that you will enjoy a safe and refreshing holiday.

Year 12 Valedictory WeekOur Year 12 students have now completed their official timetabled classes for the last time. I applaud the way in which they participated in their retreat at Opal Cove and their final assemblies and Chapel. I have never heard a more resounding version of “My Redeemer Lives”, I think this was absolute testament to the way in which we will remember the Class of 2012. They were gracious in every sense during their last week of celebration.
All that is left now is the “last lap of the stadium”. I liken the HSC journey to an Olympic marathon. They have run a steady paced race and now it is time to cross the finish line in the form of final HSC Examinations. Do your best Year 12; you have three weeks to complete your final study before the first examination on 15 October. We are all thinking of you and praying for you.

BirdLife Australia has acknowledged the generosity of Bishop Druitt College for allowing them to hold their bi-annual National Congress at the College on Saturday 15 to Sunday 16 September. Bob Brown, former Senator and Leader of the Greens, who has a childhood connection with Coffs Harbour, opened the Congress. He spoke with characteristic passion about the need to care for our natural environment. Prof. Richard Kingsford, whom many will have heard on the media, spoke of his aerial surveys of inland waterways and wetlands. Other speakers presented a variety of avian and environmental studies. 134 delegates from all over Australia attended and many commented on the pleasant environment of our College.
Congratulations to the Chemistry class of 2012 on their recent quiz results. Out of a class of 17 students, they achieved 2 Credits, 3 Distinctions and 7 High Distinctions. Six students were ranked above the 97 percentile in the state, which is an extraordinary accomplishment in such a competitive field. However, Chris Rhodes surpassed all expectations by being ranked in the 100th percentile in NSW. He was only one mark behind the highest ranked NSW student and received a Trophy of Excellence. It has been a pleasure to be a part of their journey and I wish them all the best in their upcoming HSC Examinations.

Our new College Orchestra does not have access to Timpani Drums for our College Bands and Orchestra. Parents will remember that during our recent Soirees we were collecting coins to contribute to the purchase of two much needed drums. I am keen to reconvene the Friends of Music to explore some ideas for fundraising for such a purchase. Each drum is approximately $3,500.
Thank you for your suggestions and help with this so far. We will be having a meeting in early Term 4 to get a plan of action, so watch this space for a date and time.
Bishop Druitt College was invited to contribute musical items for the VIEW Clubs of Australia’s National Convention, on Sunday 16 September. This was a wonderful privilege for our musicians and they represented the College proudly.

On Tuesday 9 October 2012 (Term 4), Maestro Warwick Stengaards, from Vienna, will be treating the orchestra students to a day of rehearsals, followed by a lunchtime concert at school. There is no cost and morning tea will be provided. Notes have been sent home. Please return these to the music office by Tuesday 18 September.

ruGbyTalented female rugby players who are 16 years or over are being invited to attend the Qantas Women’s Rugby Sevens trials. Rugby Sevens is now a recognised Olympic sport and will make its debut in Rio in 2016. These “Pathway to Gold” trials are the first step in identifying athletes who display the potential to represent Australia. Trials will be held in Sydney on 21 October and Brisbane on 28 October. Two BDC students competed at the Queens Championships for Shooting last weekend. Liam Spears and Lochlann Moran both competed in this very tough competition, with Liam displaying incredible skill to win five gold medals, two silver, and five bronze medals.
Last weekend Jack Winchester played in the PSSA Golf Championships which was held at Forster. Jack played very well against some extremely tough competition and shot 97 on the first day and 91 on the second day. This enabled him to win the Nett on day 2 with a 58. Jack finished 3rd overall in the Nett which was a fantastic result.

Vacation Care Holidays are finally here. OSHC is getting ready for an awesome two weeks for fun. To start the week we are hosting an 80’s Party on Monday, so come dressed up, get your face painted or have some crazy makeup and enjoy a day with your friends and snack on some party food. We will then be heading off to the Pet Porpoise Pool to see a little dolphin magic and take a nature walk through the mangroves. On Wednesday we will be having a cooking day were we get to make Dutch pancakes, rocky road, cupcakes and much more.
For the first time at OSHC we will have the Wild Splash, a new water ride. Children and staff will also be joining in on a water fight down on the oval and enjoy a homemade ice block. To end a perfect week we will be having a Pyjama Day, so come in your PJ’s enjoy a movie or two while we eat pizza and popcorn.

On Wednesday we had ten students representing BDC as part of the NCIS Athletics team, who travelled to Sydney to compete in the CIS championships. Once again we have had some fantastic results from all our students who competed, with many reaching the finals. Congratulations to the following students on their outstanding performances:
