A large number of our Year 9 students have just concluded the Peer Support training and were

most motivating in their application and maturity in preparing to guide the Year 7s of 2019 in their

induction to the College. The affirming impact of Peer Support cannot be understated in its

importance in supporting over 200 recent primary school students from various size schools and

Ensuring that the Year 7 Class of 2019 is stable and understands why “This is Aquinas” and the “way [and why] we do things @ Aquinas” is critical in fostering our community élan. Even more noteworthy for the Year 9s is the simple empirical imperative that allows only around half of them are able to actually take on the guidance of a Year 7 Peer Support Group. The ability to grasp and recognise that every activity embarked upon won’t always end in the unreserved success that we hope for is a key constituent in developing an acute sense of self and developing resilience that will hold our students in good standing well after Peer Support, final exams and their time @ Aquinas. I would also like to thank Mr Mollica, Mrs Wells, and Mr Lillis for their roles in the Peer Support program.

This week we received a letter from New South Wales Education Standards Authority [NESA] informing us that four of our students in our HSC Design and Technology class had been nominated for their major projects and portfolios to be included in the SHAPE 18 annual exhibition for outstanding Major Design Projects @ the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences (MAAS), Powerhouse Museum. This is an outstanding effort by these students and their teacher Mrs Halliday. Congratulations to Zoe Morrissey [La Salle House], Christina Nguyen [La Salle House], Jade Verjoustinsky [Nagle House] and Breanna Wright [Rice House] on this most significant achievement. I have witnessed firsthand the hours of work the D&T students have put into their projects during school holidays and on weekends and I believe the collaborative effort of the entire class and Ms Scarpignato and the TAS department has resulted in just rewards. More works are nominated than can be included in the exhibition and a further selection process now takes place. Final selection for the exhibition is left to the curating staff of the Powerhouse and is dependent on a multitude of factors including originality, space and fragility of projects, good luck to the girls in this final hurdle!!

The news form NESA continued with Tiana Harb’s [La Salle House] Visual Art major work, Intangible Agony also being nominated for consideration for inclusion in ARTEXPRESS 2019. As is the case in all these nominations for major works selection for the exhibition is dependent on a multitude of factors. Best wishes to Tiana for this wonderful acknowledgement of her work across the HSC year. Good luck also to Taylor Ramsay [Nagle House] who has accepted an invitation to perform the opening vocal solo for this year's Southern Region Pope Francis Award Graduation celebrations on November 22. Taylor’s selection is a result of her ongoing involvement in the CaSPA ensemble. Well done Taylor! Please also keep the Antoun family in your thoughts and prayers as Kailen’s [Rice House] grandmother recently passed away.

Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

On Thursday of Week 4, students from Aquinas Catholic College Social Justice group visited the Asylum Seeker Centre, Newtown to serve lunch to its clients. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to put their faith into action and serve the disadvantaged members of our community. The Asylum Seekers Centre provides practical and personal support for asylum seekers living in the community. Their services include casework, accommodation, financial relief, health care and counselling, employment assistance, education, advocacy, food and recreational activities. They are a not-for-profit organisation and rely on grants, donations and volunteers to undertake their work. The Year 11 Hospitality class cooked a delicious lunch of hummus, tabouli, spicy couscous salad, spicy chicken salad and quinoa salad. The asylum seekers are always very appreciative of the lunch and our efforts. Even though some of the clients have quite limited English, nearly all ensure that they thank us for the meal in some way. If there are any leftovers, the students package them into takeaway containers and the clients are able to take them home for dinner. Without fail, one of the most popular items that we bring to the centre each term is fresh fruit for dessert. The speed in which the fruit (usually oranges, bananas, apples and watermelon) is taken always reminds me of how lucky we are to have access to such wide varieties of fresh produce. This visit, we also made some choc chip cookies which were a huge hit with everyone! Many thanks to the following students for taking time away from their lessons to undertake this service: Alana Bewert (MacKillop), Jackson Hunter (La Salle), Caprice Jee (Rice), Charlotte Knoke (Rice), James Selas (Rice), Lavina Si (MacKillop) and Joshua Vangi (MacKillop).

Youth of The Year Award 2018 │ Helen Lyons

Youth of the Year (YOTY) competition is designed to encourage student interest in leadership and the qualities required to take an active and constructive role in the community. A high level of academic, leadership, sporting, public speaking and citizenship achievement is required by applicants. The competition seeks to develop outstanding role models for the youth of Australia and an overall increase in the confidence of young men and women. It was with great pleasure that I attended the Youth of the Year Awards (YOTY) hosted by Lugarno Lions Club last week with the Aquinas nominee and our school captain, Benjamin Capovilla (Rice House). Benjamin was a very competitive contestant and a credit to Aquinas Catholic College. As part of this competition, he was required to sit a 20 minute interview about youth, on a local, national and international level, along with discussing his achievements in and contribution to school and the wider community over the last year. During dinner, he was asked to give two impromptu speeches lasting two minutes each and a prepared speech lasting 5 minutes. It was evident that Benjamin has a deep interest in all areas, but especially in politics when he was asked if he thought that lowering the voting age to 16 would politicise young people. He was able to give the audience some really interesting points relating to this which made them think about important issues from a young person's perspective. Congratulations to Benjamin on his achievements with YOTY. If you are between 15-19 years of age then you too can apply for the YOTY competition. If you would like to know more information or become involved in 2019, please contact Mrs Lyons before the end of Week 8 this term.

ANXIETY DISORDERS IN YOUNG PEOPLE Professor Jennie Hudson If we want to raise healthy adults then we need to focus on raising emotionally healthy children. Anxiety disorders are the most common mental disorders and emerge the earliest. This presentation explores the development of anxiety, treatment options and how to best support young people. Professor Jennie Hudson is the Director of the Centre for Emotional Health, Macquarie University. Jennie’s research focuses on understanding the factors that contribute to children’s emotional health and working to improve the services available to children experiencing anxiety and other emotional disorders. Anxiety is the most common form of mental disorder among Australian youth and one of the biggest threats to mental health. Jennie’s work at the Centre for Emotional Health impacts the lives of Australian families through the development of new ways of understanding and treating anxiety disorders. Jennie has authored over 120 peer reviewed publications. She has co-authored the book “Treating anxious children: An evidence-based approach” (2000) and edited “Psychopathology and the Family” (2006).
