Focus: Construction Equipment Sector

POSITIVE INDICATORS

INDUSTRY TRENDIndia is amongst the fastest growing destination as far as

development of Infrastructure is concerned. There is plethora of both public and private sector infrastructure projects which augurs well for the CE industry in India. The demand trends are in the positive territory for large number of construction equipment that is highly productive, easy and safe to operate. Indian market is dominated by the six most popular equipments such as backhoe loader, crawler excavators, mobile cranes, mobile compressors, wheeled loaders and compaction equipment.

According to the Indian Construction Equipment Manufacturers’ Association (ICEMA), an affiliated body of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the Indian Construction Equipment (ICE) industry has shown signs of positive growth in FY2015-16. As per ICEMA report released in November, 2015 titled ‘ICE Industry Vision 2020’, the current size is US$

2.8 billion and is expected to grow to US$ 5 billion by 2019-20. The After Sales Spares market is about US$ 800 million and is a major source of income and employment opportunity for SSI manufacturers and service providers.

GLOBAL DEMAND SCENARIOAccording to specialist economic forecasting and market

research consultant, Off-Highway Research, the Global sales of construction equipment are forecast to fall 3.2 per cent in unit terms in 2016, to 663,553 machines following steep declines in 2015. “In the event, 2015 was worse than expected for the global construction equipment industry,” said Off-Highway Research managing director David Phillips. “Emerging markets were generally weak – the only significant exception being India – and developed regions of the world were not strong enough to offset the painful declines we saw in countries such as China.”

India’s infrastructure needs are huge and offers decades of opportunities for the building and construction sector. The growth of the Construction Equipment (CE) sector is directly proportional to the economic growth and development of infrastructure in particular. India aims to invest one trillion dollars into the infrastructure development of the country comprising roads, ports, airports, industrial corridors, etc. Building 100 Smart Cities itself promises billion dollar opportunities for all the stakeholders of the construction sector. The earthmoving segment has been in the forefront of driving the overall CE segment in India. Backhoe Loaders and Hydraulic excavators account for almost half of the Indian CE market. The demand is expected to be largely driven by government-backed infrastructure projects. The CE industry Sandeep Sharma takes a look at the CE industry in India.

Project Reporter • 23 • April 15, 2016

Focus: Construction Equipment Sector

Off-Highway Research further states that in 2015, the global equipment volumes fell 16.6 per cent to 685,536 units. The weakening of the Chinese economy and Lower commodity prices worldwide led to the fall last year. The sales of construction equipment in China dropped for the fourth year in a row by 43 per cent to 119,717 units. Off-Highway Research expects that this will represent the bottom of the market, with moderate growth expected to resume in 2017. There were also declines last year in rest of the world markets (Africa, Latin America, the Middle East and Asia excluding China, India & Japan), with construction equipment sales falling 19 per cent to 158,855 units. Weak economic conditions are expected to see a further fall to 153,764 units this year, before markets pick up in 2017. The bright spot among emerging markets last year was India, with construction equipment sales rising 2 per cent to 37,465 units. More substantial growth is expected in the coming years, with demand for construction equipment to reach almost 60,000 units by 2020.

The European construction equipment market grew 2 per cent last year to 127,411 units. This was the strongest sales have been since 2008, but demand was still significantly below the pre-crisis peak. Further single-digit growth is expected in the coming years, which should see demand rise to 136,380 units by 2020. Meanwhile, the North American market retreated from the peak which was seen in 2014, with a 2 per cent decline in sales to 167,255 units last year. A further fall is expected this year, before growth returns. There was a similar picture in Japan last year. Having reached a high point of 90,830 units in 2013, there was a 11 per cent fall in sales in 2015 to 74,833 units. The market is expected to level-out this year, with more sustained growth following from 2017 onwards.

David Phillips said, “Off-Highway Research’s forecast is that the global market will reach the bottom of the cycle in 2016, which will be the fifth consecutive year of falling construction equipment sales. When it comes, the recovery is likely to be gradual, reflecting weak business confidence and the uncertain geopolitical outlook around the world.”

CHALLENGESThe challenges before the CE players are multi pronged.

The first challenge is to utilise the capacity built over the boom period. Secondly, innovation is not a onetime process, it has to be carried out as an ongoing activity and showcase the same with the launch of new products which are more robust and efficient. Thirdly, the industry growth very much depends on the debottlenecking of the existing project pipeline. Some of

the other challenges include the shortage of skilled operators in India mainly in heavy earthmoving equipment, availability equipment financing at attractive interest rates, absence of robust used CE market. Last but not the least, the renting options are limited to the consumer.

CUSTOMER PREFERENCEThe users of Construction Equipment in India are looking

for total product solutions in terms of quality, reliability, durability & its cost effectiveness. The CE players will have to meet the growing technological demands of the end user. Customers of CE look for well-defined parameters such as Efficiency, Reliability, and Durability in order to ascertain their superior quality standards. The challenge for the manufacturers and vendors of CE is to present a unique mix of latest technology, functionality, and quality that guarantees best operational

results in the real work environment. Safety is another focus area for all the construction equipment manufacturers. Companies are now deploying technology which will ensure proper safety of the operator as well as the machine. In the coming years, that equipment which are fuel efficient and provide enhanced features based on the customer needs will be the winners.

FUTURE OUTLOOKIndian Construction

Equipment Manufacturers’ Association (ICEMA) has projected that the ICE

industry will touch an output level of 70,000 units by 2018-19. The overcapacity built in the past few years is likely to be used up by then. According to 6Wresearch, ICE market is likely to touch 1, 31,000 units by 2022. The market declined during 2012-2014 mainly due to delay in project clearances and in certain cases owing to land acquisition issues. After the new government was sworn in, things have started moving in the fast lane, the stalled projects are being discussed and attempts are made to remove all kinds of obstruction in the path of project execution.

With the huge investment in the infrastructure sector in the coming five years, the demand for CE is definitely on the upsurge. Rapid exp¬ansion and development of airports, ports, metro rail, steel plants, high-rise building, shopping malls, roads/highways/bridges, dams and manufacturing hubs is ultimately pointing to steep increase in the demand of Construction Equipment. The Government role as an enabler can go a long way in the growth of CE segment in India. GST and Land bills clearance and creation of separate regulatory framework and legislation mainly for off-highway equipment can make huge difference in putting the CE sector on the path to progress.

Q&A

Zuari Cement

KRISHNA SRIVASTAVA, Whole Time Director, Zuari Cement Ltd shares views with Sandeep Sharma about his company, core competencies, products offered, manufacturing base, operational efficiency and demand scenario shaping for cement in India. Edited Excerpts...

The Cement Industry in the last 3 years have been passing through the worst demand scenario in the recent few decades, with a colossal demand-supply mismatch especially in South India. We have seen 3 continuous years of dropping demand in South India which has a CAGR of around 14%. This, along with a supply scale up of 12% for the same period have made situation even worse. The way India seems to be projected for growth of over 7% GDP in the current year & another couple of years to come, Cement sector, being part of the core sector, has a gleam of hope. However, the investment that the Government both in Centre & the States make in Infrastructure development will have the key say.

Could you tell us in brief about your company, brand and core competencies?

Zuari Cement is part of the worldwide Italcementi Group, the fifth largest cement producer in the world. Zuari Cement has a total cement manufacturing capacity of 6 million tons in India, which includes two manufacturing units at Sitapuram and Yerraguntla, along with a grinding centre at Chennai and at Solapur in Maharashtra. Zuari cement is developing a project of 3 million ton per year cement plant in North Karnataka. A cement terminal is also being developed at Kochi, Kerala. In line with Groups’ global focus on quality and environment, Zuari Cement’s manufacturing units are ISO 50001: 2011, ISO: 9001 and ISO: 14001 Certified. In the year 2015, among the accolades Zuari Cement have won, are “World’s Greatest Brands – Asia & GCC 2015” by PricewaterhouseCoopers, “Global Marketing Excellence Award (Cement Sector)” by CMO Asia, “Asia Manufacturing Excellence Award for Safety 2015”, and CII “National Award for Excellence in Energy

Management” and “Excellence Award” by IES. Our Whole Time Director won the “Udyog Ratan” Award by IES for 2015. We have earlier been adjudged as ‘Outstanding Company’ in Cement sector, at the 4th EPC World Awards 2013. Zuari Cement has been recognized as a “Power Brand” for the second consecutive year in 2013. Earlier in 2011 awarded “Master Brand” by the CMO council Asia.

Could you provide us insight about your products/solutions offered?

Our product portfolio includes Ordinary Portland cement, Portland slag cement, Portland Pozzolana cement, Masonry Cement, Anti polluting and self-cleaning “Tx Active Cement”, transparent cement named “i.light”.

Zuari Cement’s latest launch is i.pro Brixment-Masonry Cement. The mortar of i.pro Brixment spreads easily and has a superior adhesive and cohesive quality which extrudes readily from the joints as units are placed and does not smear

nor drops. The superior plasticity prevents rapid loss of mixing water enabling the masonry units to be carefully aligned, leveled, plumbed and adjusted to proper grade without the intimate contact and bond. i.pro Brixment has greater resistance to chemical attack, staining and freeze-thaw deterioration due to the controlled air content of masonry cement mortars. It has a consistent rate of hardening enabling the mason to lay the masonry units and tool the joints at the same degree of hardness, thereby obtaining uniform joint color. This cement is specifically designed to cater the masonry needs of construction and are made available in 25 Kg Paper bags as against the conventional 50 Kg Cement bag.

As a group, Zuari belongs to the Italcementi group that is world renowned for Innovative products and have all types & varieties of Cement that cater to all construction needs.

What’s your market share vis-a-vis the cement industry in India?

We are predominantly a South India based player and to talk about market share on All India basis would be wrong, as we operate in only States of South India and Southern Maharashtra & Orissa. In the markets that we operate, we have a commendable market share and also a very well established Brand equity that translates into better margins for the Company & its Channel partners.

Could you share with us details about your manufacturing base, capacity and production process?

As explained earlier, we have 2 integrated plants in Yerraguntla (AP) & Sitapuram (Telegana). We also have 2 grinding facilities at Chennai (Tamil Nadu) and Solapur (Maharashtra). Our new packing unit is just about to be commissioned in Cochin (Kerala). Zuari holds a clinker production capacity of 5.0 MT & Cement production capacity is 7.4 MT.

Do you have any plans in place to cut costs and increase operational efficiency?

We have devised internal strategies on optimum resource utilization & increased operational efficiency. Our efforts have

really borne fruits and it has been well appreciated by CII, while awarding us the prestigious National Award for Excellence in Energy Management in 2015. We are also the Co-chair for CSI India and have consistently displayed our conscious efforts to have a sustainable operation in the manufacturing of Cement. In the month of December 2015, we have launched a new Sales Excellence Program in the Company christened “i.smart”. We expect this new initiative to deliver results in 2016.

How is the current demand scenario shaping up for cement producers in India? What’s your expectation from the next financial year?

As part of a multi-billion cement industry we sincerely believe that the bad times are all behind us.

How do you plan to tackle the competition in the cement sector?

We have always been able to create a niche market of quality conscious customers for ourselves. Despite the fact that we are not a pan India player, with huge capacities in India, we have been able to astutely use our status as part of the 5th largest Cement manufacturer in the world, having operations in over 22 countries.

Our brand building exercises have also complimented our efforts. The same has well been acknowledged by accolades we have received in the recent past as also the recognition the Channel & end-user communities have bestowed on us.

The 25 basis cut in the repo rate is a welcoming step by RBI. More so, the 75 basis points cut in the marginal standing facility (MSF) is even a more important announcement by the governor. The

most exciting part of this announcement was governor making the comment that the RBI will push banks to actually cut the rates on lending for home loans and automobiles loans. This rate cut to end user will be the real reason of joy for CREDAI. Having said that, we also understand that at this point of time the banks are burdened with NPAs, which calls for a higher amount of provisioning. This will act as key deterrents for banks to cut rates on retail lending. But we still are very hopeful that home buyers will get at least a 50 basis point cut in home loan rates. This should definitely go well for the industry at large.

The first bi-monthly policy of this new financial year has brought with it a rate cut of 25 basis points, which is a welcome move by RBI. The revision in rates would accelerate the economic growth and

real estate in particular. Liquidity issues have been the focus of this monetary policy which in a way was very significant. Also the new maths of MCLR would make interest rates more sensitive to policy changes making borrowing cheaper than before. Although we are expecting more rate cuts in future, the competitive interest rates at present has brought win-win situation for both the buyers as well as developers.

GETAMBER ANAND President,

CREDAI National

PRASHANT TIWARI Chairman,

Prateek Group

ON RBI MONETARY POLICY REVIEW

The rate cut was an expected move and it is clear that markets will rejoice the reduced interest rates. High interest rates could lead the economy towards sluggishness; therefore, it was a required

step to aid economic growth. The cut was a balanced move considering the inflation trends and CPI. The reduction in rates would ease the liquidity issues eventually pushing sales and giving the much needed respite to the real estate sector. The move is expected to encourage home buyers to finalize their purchasing decision especially activating the fence sitters.

The revised REPO rate by the Reserve Bank of India will definitely impact the sentiments of the real estate market in a positive manner. Banks will now be able to offer loans at more attractive

rates. Cheaper loans for home buyers will prompt the interest of people in property purchase from end users and investors. Banks may revise the base rate too, which would benefit old home loan borrowers who are currently paying much higher interest rates than new borrowers would. We feel that this would be an important move by banks and help them contain client attrition. Side by side, this move seems to put positive impact for the real estate developers. The real estate developers might envisage a marginal reduction in the cost of funding, which would be a real relief from the incessantly growing development cost

The central bank’s decision to reduce repo rate by 25 basis points will make home loans cheaper, and also increase liquidity in the banking system. We are hopeful that the increase in the liquidity

along with the improvement in the health of the economy will boost demand. Cheaper loans for home buyers and rising demand will create renewed interest in residential property purchase from end users.

We welcome the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)’s credit policy announcement of a repo rate cut by 25 basis points (25 bps or 0.25 per cent). The RBI Governor’s move is timed perfectly as

the rate cut announcement has come just before Gudi Padva, one of the most auspicious periods for buying a new home. Considering the overall market scenario, we were expecting at least a 50 basis points cut from the central bank this time. We hope that the banks and financial institutions will pass on the benefit of the rate cut to home-buyers. We are sure that the RBI announcement will have a positive impact on the market sentiment, especially when it comes to home-buyers.
