Transcript of 16 Oct. 20
From the Principal,
October 23rd – 29th This October will mark the 31st anniversary of Red Ribbon Week. Red Ribbon Week was started to honor
Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. In 1985 Agent
Camarena was a DEA agent who lost his life in the war on drugs. Agent Camarena knew the dangers of his
job, but he also knew that the future of America was dependent on stopping drug abuse. He gave the
ultimate sacrifice for this cause.
Members of the National Federation of Parents wore small badges of red satin in memory of Camarena and
to symbolize their commitment toward the creation of a drug free America. The Red Ribbon has now
become a symbol for the drug free movement.
DuJardin students and staff will be showing their support of drug awareness next week by wearing red
ribbons and stickers to take a stand against drugs. We are also asking that all students and staff wear red
next Friday to show our support.
To show our support of making healthy choices for our body by choosing to be drug free, students in grades
Kindergarten through 2nd grade will receive a drug free sticker and students in grades 3rd through 5th will
receive a Red Ribbon to wear throughout the week. If you would like any additional information, please call Charla
Treanor, DuJardin Social Worker, at (630) 894-9200.
If you would like to hear more about the school improvement goals and other pertinent school issues please
plan on attending the upcoming Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) meeting. This meeting will take place after
the November 8th PTO Meeting. All parents are welcome to attend. Please RSVP the school office at 630-
894-9200 if you plan to attend this meeting.

SOCKTOBER: A Month Long Community Sock Drive
This October the Bloomingdale CHARACTER COUNTS! Coalition and Socks & Souls wants to prove that even
the smallest act of caring, like donating a pair of new socks, can help make a huge difference in the lives of our
neighbors who are homeless!
SOCKTOBER is a national sole warming movement that gives everyone an easy and fun way to help those in need within their very own
town via a new pair of socks!
So why should you participate in SOCKTOBER? Because every night in the United States an estimated 600,000 people live on the streets and need simple things,
like socks, to help get them through the night.
So please donate a new pair of socks today and Socks & Souls will help you do the rest as we are
hosting our own SOCKTOBER collections through the Bloomingdale CHARACTER
COUNTS! Coalition.
Help warm Souls with Soles through CHARACTER COUNTS!
This year our school is using a bucket filler theme for Character Counts! based on the book, “Have you Filled a Bucket Today?” by Carol McCloud.
An illustrated version of the book, “How Full Is Your Bucket? For Kid,” has been read to all classrooms. In “How Full Is Your Bucket? For Kids,” Felix begins to see how every interaction in a day either fills or empties his bucket. Felix then realizes that everything he says or does to other people fills or empties their buckets as well. Each of us has an invisible bucket. When our bucket is full, we feel great. When it’s empty, we feel awful.
A bucket filler is someone who says or does nice things for other people. By doing this, they are filling other people’s buckets and filling their own bucket at the same time. Bucket filling creates positive energy in schools that is contagious. It can reduce negativity and increase kindness and compassion.
This year, we have placed six Character Counts! pillars with buckets attached to the top in the front lobby. All staff members and parent volunteers are encouraged to recognize students for bucket filling behavior choices by giving them a special coin pictured above. Once a student receives a coin they will deposit that coin in the bucket for the pillar their grade level has been assigned. At the end of each month, coins will be counted for each grade level. A graph located behind the pillars will indicate the number of coins each grade level has received. The grade level with the most coins at the end of the month will earn a special reward.
Let’s all become bucket fillers this year as we embark upon,
The Bucket Filler Challenge!
