IN GOD ALONE Isaiah speaks to us today of Cyrus, King of Persia, anointed by the Lord. God calls Cyrus by name and leads him in service to the Israelites. In this passage we hear that it is the Lord who gives Cyrus his title, who arms him against his enemies, and who opens doors and unbars gates before him. And God does all of this so that the people will know that “I am the LORD,” and that “there is none besides me” (Isaiah 45:6).

Paul opens his letter with essentially the same notion—that in God alone we find our grace and peace. Paul also gives thanks to God on our behalf, calling to mind our work of faith, hope, and love. And in the familiar Gospel reading, Jesus tells the Pharisees to give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.

A cup of coffee

with Gary Van Eyll I am sure that each of us has received Father Doug’s letter concerning the state of Guardian Angels Parish finances. A couple of things stood out to me (and probably you as well) and I wanted to share my thoughts with you.

• Our Line of Credit Our outstanding line of credit is $90,000. It is due on November 1, 2011. Over the past year, we have

paid the interest but not any of the principal AND we are not in a position to pay it when it comes due. We are currently looking at some options for paying off this debt. This is a decision that will be made by the Parish Council and Finance Council, who met to discuss this issue on October 13th at the Leadership Meeting.

• Our Capital Campaign I was surprised and disappointed to learn that only 15% of our parishioners donated to the Capital

Campaign. The Campaign is wrapping up its efforts at the end of October. The Rebuild My Church Committee thanks everyone who worked on the Campaign, all those who pledged, and all those who have made their donations. However, I am sure you will agree that 15% participation is disheartening. As co-chairman for the Campaign I am puzzled by the lack of support by the majority of parishioners to assist in this effort.

With the funds we raised through the Campaign (and to those of you who have pledged but not yet made your donations, PLEASE send them in) we came within $60,000. of paying for the tuck

pointing of the North Campus. As promised we have not started any other projects. Guardian Angels is simply in a “holding pattern” in regard to repairs and we will continue to address these issues on an emergency basis.

• Where Do We Go From Here? Parishioner, Adie Arlt, had a suggestion to save us some money. We have taken him very seriously

and I look forward to thanking him the next time I see him (though, I still think he should donate to the Rake-a-Thon. Have you seen all the leaves in his yard?) Thank you, Adie!

The Guardian Angels community has worked hard over the past few years to build a renewed and more vibrant parish. Most recently, our 3rd AngelFest was very successful due in large part to the Forner family who spearheaded the effort, and to the many volunteers who helped set up, work the booths, and clean up! THANK YOU FORNER FAMILY! The music, games & activities and food were all awesome! We count on this fundraiser (and others) as part of our operating budget.

Guardian Angels depends on our committed volunteers and staff for so much of our ministry. We have changed the leadership structure of our parish and the various committees met on October 13th to discuss “where do we go from here?” What will Guardian Angels look like in six, nine, or fifteen years? Specifically, what do we want our parish to be? For 150+ years, those who went before us gave their time and talents to Guardian Angels. It’s time for all of us to pitch in and do the same – working together, we can accomplish great things. Please give some thought to “where do we go from here” and provide your leadership team with suggestions. Thank You.

Mass Intentions … Mass intentions may be for the living and the departed, with a + designating in the bulletin a deceased person. There is a $10 suggested donation per Mass intention. Permission from the sick person or his/her family must be granted before a name’s inclusion in these prayers. To schedule a Mass intention, call Jean in the parish office.

Baptism … Sacramental preparation is required for all parents. Godparents and Grandparents are also encouraged to attend. Baptismal prep sessions are given every other month and Baptism Masses are held once a month. Call Jean in the parish office to schedule a child for Baptism and the parents for baptismal prep.

Prayers of the Faithful ….If you would like a name included in our Prayers of the Faithful for the sick, please call the Parish Office.

Penance...Saturdays from 4:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and anytime by appointment.

Matrimony...pre-registration required one year in advance; marriage preparation course is required.

Anointing… If you wish to receive an anointing please call the parish office.

Communion for the Homebound...When we come together to pray at our Eucharistic liturgy, we do not forget the members of our community who are unable to be with us because of ill health. We remember them in our prayer, and we wish to include them in our Holy Communion. Members of our community bring the Blessed Sacrament to them to comfort them and to unite them with us in the Eucharist. We are not always aware of those who have this need. Please call the Parish Office to let us know if you or a member of your family would like to have Holy Communion brought to them. That way we can schedule a time for our ministers to visit and bring the Sacrament.

Hospital, Nursing Home, Homebound Visits...Churches are no longer notified by hospitals or nursing homes when a parishioner is admitted unless the family has requested it. If you or a family member are homebound, hospitalized or in a nursing home and would like a visit from a member of the pastoral ministry staff, please call Jean Rief in the parish office.

Saint Costume Contest

Wednesday, October 28th Each child in our FF program, grades 1-10, is invited to be a part of this contest. The children are asked to not only dress as their chosen saint, but to know some interesting facts about that saint. Last year not only were the costumes amazing, but the information the kids had memorized about the saints was also very impressive! Need help choosing a saint? Try this website: www.catholic.org/saints. If your child would like to participate in this contest, please have them come in their Saint costume on Oct. 28th. (If you feel the costume will be a distraction from the rest of the class, please send clothes for your child to change into after the costumes have been judged.) Fr. Doug, Mrs. Gallus (school principal) and a mystery judge will be our judges for the contest. Questions? Please call Emily Klinker 227-4007 WINGED WARRIORS (K-4 MINISTRY)

Volunteer Needed – Giving Tree Ministry:

Our Christmas Giving Tree has long been a wonderful way our Parish has given to people in our community during the Christmas season.

The Parish is looking for a volunteer to take over this ministry. If no volunteer is found, we may need to discontinue this wonderful ministry.

What’s involved….. Contact organization and get a list of

their needs. Make tags for the tree. Collect and deliver gifts. Go shopping for missing gifts.

This ministry runs from October to December and is great for a family to do together.

If you have questions or are interested in volunteering, contact Patty at 361-6938 or Jean at 227-4095.

Di-cho porcentaje me sorprendió y decepcionó mucho. Gracias! Gary Van Eyll Director de la Parroquia

Guardian Angels is one of 22 churches in Eastern Carver County that make up Love INC. You're invited to a wonderful evening at the Love INC Hope Banquet, Friday, Nov. 4th, at Hazeltine National Golf Club. What an amazing evening it will be as we hear Ray Charles' daughter, Sheila Raye, share her incredible journey from despair to hope. Also, Carol Zimmerman and some friends will provide first-class musical entertainment. You might also find a great deal at the silent auction, and bring hope and encouragement to those in need at the same time! We also believe this banquet is a great way to spread the news about what is happening through Love INC in our community to those who may not know. Why not sponsor a whole table, or a half table, and invite a few friends, neighbors, or co-workers to join you for a fantastic evening? Call 952-448-2508 or go to www.loveincecc.org to order tickets or to get more information.
