O How Amiable
Fugue in E-flat Major (St. Anne), BWV 552
Vaughan Williams
Sicut Cervus
Sing unto God, and high affections raise,To crown this conquest with unmeasured praise.
Sing Unto God Handel
Sicut cervus desiderat As the deer longs ad fontes aquarum, for the running waters, ita desiderat anima mea ad te Deus. so my soul longs for you, O God.
Palestrina
O how amiable are thy dwellings: thou Lord of hosts!My soul hath a desire and longing to enter into the courts of the Lord:
My heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God.Yea, the sparrow hath found her an house, and the swallow a nest where she may lay her young:
even thy altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God.
Blessed are they that dwell in thy house: They will be alway praising thee.The glorious majesty of the Lord our God be upon us: prosper thou the work of our hands upon us.
O prosper thou our handiwork.O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come,Our shelter from the stormy blast. And our eternal home.
Introit plainchant, mode II
Terribilis est locus iste: How awesome this place is! hic domus Dei est, et porta caeli: This is the house of God and the gateway to heaven; et vocabitur aula Dei. and it will be called the courtyard of God. Quam dilecta tabernacula tua, How lovely is your tabernacle, Domine virtutum! O Lord of Hosts! Concupiscit, et deficit anima mea, My soul longs and pines in atria Domini. after the courts of the Lord.

Homily
Profession of Faith
I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
All bow at the following words up to: and became man. and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

O Jesus Christ, creator of the world, of humankind Redeemer blest!True God of God in whom we see The Father’s image clear expressed. O Savior, love alone constrained To make our mortal flesh your own;
And as a second Adam come for the first Adam to atone. That self-same love that made the sky, Which made the sea, and stars and earth,
Took pity on our sinfulness, And broke the bondage of our birth. O Jesus Christ, in your Heart divine May that same love forever flow;
Mercy for ever to us all From that unending fountain flow. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

MusiC At todAy’s MAssThe music chosen for today’s celebration honors the rich tradition of sacred music the Basilica has enjoyed for the past 125 years, and especially commemorates those whose talented contributions have enriched the Basilica’s music program over the years.
The prelude culminates with Bach’s “St. Anne” fugue, which showcases the melody from the familiar hymn “O God, Our Help in Ages Past.” This same melody is featured at the conclusion of Vaughan Williams’ setting of Psalm 84, “O How Amiable are thy dwellings: thou Lord of Hosts!” Both Psalm 84 and the chant introit “How awesome this place is!” are traditional pieces for the anniversary or dedication of a church.
The Opening Hymn, “All People That On Earth Do Dwell” was arranged by Ralph Vaughan Williams for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and is a Basilica favorite. This hymn for brass, choir, percussion, organ and congregation has been used for countless solemn occasions at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart.
The settings of the Gloria and Lamb of God from Mass of Our Lady were written by Professor Emeritus Calvin Bower and are dedicated to Dr. Gail Walton, Director of Music at the Basilica from 1988-2010. Prof. Bower taught for many years in the Department of Music as well as in the Medieval Institute and also was the director of the Notre Dame Chapel Choir in the 1980s. Calvin’s beautiful psalm settings are used at the Basilica regularly and his compositions sung at the Easter Vigil are venerable traditions.
The Responsorial Psalm, Psalm 118, “Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, for his mercy endures forever,” was written by Steven C. Warner especially for today’s Mass. Steve is the founder and director of the Notre Dame Folk Choir and his compositions are used throughout the country.
The verse before the Gospel, “I have chosen and consecrated this house, says the Lord, that my name may be there forever,” was written for this occasion by Dr. Kevin Vogt, a graduate of the University of Notre Dame’s Master’s of Music program in the early 1990s. Dr. Vogt received his DMA from the University of Kansas and is an outstanding organist, composer and conductor.
In honor of the 125th anniversary of the consecration of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Thomas Mueller was commissioned to compose today’s preparation anthem, “Jesus Creator of The World.” The text, chosen by Basilica rector Rev. Peter D. Rocca, CSC, is the hymn assigned to first vespers in the Latin edition of the Roman Liturgy of the Hours for the solemnity of the Sacred Heart and is brilliantly scored for brass, organ, percussion and choir. Mr. Mueller is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame’s Master’s of Sacred Music program and currently a doctoral student at the Eastman School of Music. Besides being a gifted organist and composer, Thomas is a great friend of the Notre Dame Liturgical Choir.
Christopher Willcock’s setting of Psalm 34 and the Mozart “Ave Verum Corpus” are traditional communion pieces heard for many years at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. These simple and elegant compositions have been heard and sung by thousands over the years.
The hymn “O God Beyond All Praising” is perhaps the most well-loved hymn at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. Arranged by Notre Dame graduate Robert Hobby for brass, percussion, choir and congregation, the hymn is based on the “Jupiter” theme from The Planets by Gustav Holst. Bob resides in Fort Wayne, Indiana where he composes, arranges, conducts and is organist at Trinity English Lutheran Church.
“Notre Dame, Our Mother” was arranged many years ago by David Clarke Isele who served the University of Notre Dame as a faculty member in the Department of Music. Many of Professor Isele’s composition are still sung today especially by the Notre Dame Glee Club which he conducted.
The Closing Hymn for today’s Mass, “Holy God, We Praise Thy Name,” was arranged by Joseph Petros, a seven-year member of the Notre Dame Liturgical Choir and a “double domer.” A very talented musician and composer, Joe also arranged the closing hymn that is used every Easter Sunday “Christ the Lord is Risen Today.” Mr. Petros currently practices law in Ohio.
Today’s celebration concludes with the Papal Anthem, Charles Gounod’s “Marche pontificale.” The music was composed in 1869 for the celebration of Pope Pius IX’s golden jubilee of priestly ordination. Since the Basilica was designated a minor basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1992, the Papal Anthem has been used to commemorate the Basilica’s consecration as well as other feasts and solemnities.
