St. Thomas of Canterbury Episcopal Church and Campus Ministry Canterbury Communications Week of August 5, 2018 UNM Research Project on Religious Imagery Dr. Eveline Seghers and Professor Geoffrey Miller of the Department of Psychology at UNM are conducting a study on the psychological mechanisms behind the use of visual imagery in religious belief systems. This study involves lookingata sample setof images fromvarious
religious backgrounds, including Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism,Taoism,Javanesemythology,Islam,Judaism,theAncientMiddleEastand traditional Central American cultures. For each image,participantsarerequestedtoratetheiremotionalresponses,beforebeingaskedanumberofquestionsabouttheirreligiousbackground,beliefs and practices. The study concludes with a recognition taskregardingthesesameimages.
The entire survey is expected to take around 45 minutes tocomplete. All data will be collected and analyzed completelyanonymously. Taking part in the study has no known risks. Shouldyouwish,youcanenteryoure-mailaddresstotakepartinadraw,towinoneofthree$20giftcardsfortheUNMBookstore. Inthiscase,youcanenter thisaddressviaa separate survey link, so that youridentitycannotbetracedbacktotheanswersyougaveinthemainsurvey. All individuals taking part will provide an importantcontribution to understanding how and why images are used inreligious belief systems. All participants will receive an informedconsentstatementcontainingallnecessaryinformationabouttakingpartinthestudy.Youmustbeatleast18yearsoldtotakepart.
