A MESSAGE FROM FR. TIM

2 THE MOST HOLY BODY & BLOOD OF CHRIST- SUNDAY MAY 29, 2016

Today, we celebrate one of the great mysteries of our Faith the Holy Trinity, one God yet three per-sons. For me when faced with a mystery of our faith I like to come to some understanding that I can identify with. In other words something that works for me; that I can put a handle on and it helps me with my life. When I think of the Trinity I look to the Father who, in creating us, gave us eve-rything we needed to be happy. When we lost that because of sin He gave us His Son to redeem us and to show us how to live life. The Son lived among us, as one of us, He revealed to us who the father is and who we are. He died for us and rose from the dead. In doing so He redeemed us and won for us eternal life through His life, death and resurrection. He basically showed us that good rises above evil. He called us to follow Him. Vatican II really opened the doors for the Spirit. Many of us grew up the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. No one really talked about the Holy Ghost as we did not understand it. With Vatican II there was much more of an emphasis on the third person of the Blessed Trinity than I ever remembered be-fore. For me when I think of the Holy Spirit I think of the Spirit in terms of God directing us to the fullness of life. Remember in Jesus’ farewell address He said He has told us all this so that “His joy maybe ours and our joy maybe complete.” Remember also in this address He prays that we maybe one as He and the Father are one. His plan is for unity and He has given us His spirit to help us accomplish just that. Recall the words to the prayer at Confirmation “By water and the Holy Spirit You freed your sons and daughters from sin And gave them new life. Send your Holy Spirit upon them To be their Helper and Guide. Give them the Spirit of Wisdom and Understanding The Spirit of Right Judgment and Courage, The Spirit of knowledge and reverence. Fill them with the Spirit of wonder and awe in Your presence.”

At Pentecost, we are reminded that we have all been gifted with the Spirit of God. As we celebrate the feast of the Holy Trinity we are re-minded of God’s unconditional love for and his call to follow Him. The Trinity calls us to reflect on what is ours and what can be ours if we in-clude God. In St Paul’s letter to the Galatians St Paul reminds us of what happens when we ignore the gifts we have been given. Working without the Spirit results in acts of hatred, ri-valry, jealousy, outbursts of fury, acts of selfishness, dissensions, factions, occasions of envy. In contrast he says in the Spirit there is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faith-fulness, self-control. One might ask which one is more pre-dominant in today’s society or in my life. If we see it as the first; would a more felt presence of God make a difference? If we all worked for unity, practiced acts of kindness and used self-control; would things be dif-ferent? Remember, Jesus started with twelve. What a difference He has made! Fr. Tim

COLLABORATIVE UPDATES

Catholic Appeal 2016

The 2016 Catholic Appeal response from St. Margaret’s has reached its goal, but we are still a little short at Blessed Sacrament. At St. Margaret’s, 100 donors have contrib-uted $19,130 towards a goal of $18,828 or 102%. At Blessed Sacrament, 120 do-nors have contributed $23,075 towards a goal of $28,537 or 81%. As Blessed Sacrament moves toward its goal, a generous parishioner has offered to match every donation to enable us to reach the goal of $28,537. Please con-sider donating to the appeal. No donation is too small. These donations are used to support more than 50 ministries which serve the needs of all parishes within our Archdiocese, includ-ing both parishes of our Saugus Collabora-tive. These ministries have a profound influ-ence on the lives of so many by helping to pass on our faith to young and new Catho-lics, by supporting the priests, deacons, seminarians and other religious and all those who offer their lives to serve us. If you did not receive a pledge form in the mail, please pick one up at the church or the Collaborative Offices. You can also make a pledge on line by going to: boston-catholicappeal.org. and clicking on the Do-nate Now link. Thank you in advance for your support of this year's Catholic Appeal.

100th Anniversary at Blessed Sacrament

October 29, 2017 marks the 100th anniversary when Blessed Sacrament became a parish unto itself. A committee has come together to look at possible ways of celebrating this milestone. When the parish celebrated its 75th anniversary a book was published that traced the history from its concep-tion until 1991. Included in this book were pictures of the vari-ous activities, volunteers and staff. Is there an interest in putting together a book for the 100th? To do that we need volunteers to pull together the history and gather pictures. We have a volunteer who has offered his services. If there is anyone inter-est in helping with this project, please speak with Fr. Tim or email Fr. [email protected].

Sanctuary Lamp Bread and Wine Donations If you would like to donate the Sanctuary Lamp ($25.) and or the Bread and Wine ($45.) in memory of a loved one, please contact the Collaborative Office at 781-233-2497.

COLLABORATIVE NEWS

THE MOST HOLY BODY & BLOOD OF CHRIST-SUNDAY-

Two Hearts, one Bridge This past Saturday, we celebrated the Pieta Mass for parents or grandparents who have lost a child. The Pieta is a sculpture created by Michelan-gelo circa 1498. It shows the Blessed Mother Mary holding the lifeless body of Christ her son, our Sav-ior after it was taken from from the Cross. It re-minds us that although without sin, she felt the ag-ony of losing a child whom she loved. Losing your child should never be considered a punishment from God.

As part of this Mass, family members were invited to receive a lit candle at the center of the Church and to bring it to the Tabernacle where I would receive the candle and give the family members a prayer card and a blessing. With a bit of divine inspiration, but unsure how many candles we would have. I arranged the candles to show the two hearts, the first one on the left, the second on the right, and just enough candles for a cross in be-tween. God is funny like that sometimes. What I noticed after placing the candles was the warm glow of light that reflected off the tabernacle doors and I had a true feeling that the heart at the right, the one a bit larger, is God's heart (Jesus) and the heart on the left is the heart of the loved ones we mourn but the cross is the bridge given by Christ's own death to connect every heart to His Sacred Heart and that the glow is the love, the faith, and the hope we are called to have that Christ carried the souls of our deceased loved ones home where their spirits stand before God in heaven; just like the candles stood before God's sacramental presence in the tabernacle. As we mourn, please remember what the Mass told us: For your faithful Lord, Life has changed, not ended.

Peace and Blessings, Fr. Michael

Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ Eucharist is from the Greek word meaning gratitude, thanksgiving. On May 29th, we celebrate this great gift that Jesus gave us. He promised that He would be with us al-ways, and He left us the sacrament of His Body and Blood. Do I know how great this gift is? Do I take it for granted – get to Mass a bit late, leave after Communion? Consider Who I am receiving. Consider what Jesus calls me to be and to do. Holy Communion is very definitely ‘take out’ Food: we are called to receive Jesus and bring Him to everyone we meet. Holy Communion is very definitely NOT fast food: Body of Christ. Amen. Out the side door. Find a Mass time that allows you to stay until the last note of the recessional! Eucharist – thanksgiving.

Eucharistic Ministers Needed There is a need for additional Eucharistic Ministers in both par-ishes. If you are interested please speak with Fr. Tim.

Eucharistic Minister Meeting: All Eucharistic Ministers, those who assist at liturgy and those who bring communion to the homebound, are asked to attend a meeting on Tuesday, evening June 7 at 7:00 p.m. at Saint Mar-garet Church. If unable to attend you are asked to speak with Fr. Tim.

Mercy Day is almost here! Mercy - the bridge that connects God and man, opening our hearts to the hope of being loved forever despite our sinfulness. - Pope Francis I remember the first time I went to confession - and it was only last year! That’s right, you read that correctly, last year was the first time I had ever gone to confession! I was new to the Catholic faith and I needed to get this one last thing off my check list before I was confirmed at the Easter Vigil. I was so scared to go. I tried for about a month to convince myself to go. I made several attempts. First of all, I didn’t want to tell anyone what a wretched person I am, especially a sweet and innocent priest! But most of all, I really didn’t want to hear out loud my own sins. There was something about hearing them aloud that made it more “official”- like, now it was written in stone whereas before I thought I could just ignore it. I had no idea how much it was weighing me down. During one of my “attempts” to go to confession, I was sitting out front of Saint Margaret’s Church, and thought this would be another ill-fated attempt. I ended up texting my friend for encouragement. I told her I was out front yet again and just could not go in. After some back and forth and some “can do” encourage-ment – I took that leap of faith and headed in, in search of this “mercy” everyone always speaks of. Would it be there for me too? How can it be? And worse yet, what if it’s not? I was not sure it would be and I think that was part of my fear as well. What if I go to confession and I don’t feel this mercy everyone speaks of? What then? It was a risk I had to take. I walked in as I mentioned, it was right before Easter - so it was busy and I had to wait. This gave me time to prepare my escape plan and to come up with excuses I could tell my friend for the reasons I wasn’t able to go. But God had other plans for me that day. No sooner was I having these thoughts and my number was up! This was it! This would be the moment I had feared and dreaded for SO long. It was the longest walk from the first pew to the confessional. When I went in I was already sobbing. I stepped out on that bridge Pope Francis speaks of. My admittance to the bridges’ seven simple words, “Forgive me Father for I have sinned”. Those seven words changed my life. When I left there, I was now crying - not because I was afraid to go to confession… I was sad I had waited so long to go. Mercy was there. Mercy was waiting. I even asked Father Tim if he was SURE it was for me too. He assured me it was. I know it was, because when I left that day I was a totally different person. I was forgiven. And I was shown mercy. Not because I deserved it, but because I asked for it. That is what mercy is. Making a personal choice to forgive even when someone doesn’t deserve it. I certainly didn’t. But it was the greatest thing I have ever received. So… I share this story so that maybe it will encourage you to go on your journey and ask God for the mercy He has waiting just for you. Remember, it all starts with crossing that bridge and seven simple words- Amy Guider is the wife of Rich, mother of Olivia and Sam a parishioner in the Saugus Catholics Collaborative.

Collaborative Purpose

WHY DOES THE COLLABORATIVE EXIST? The Saugus Catholics Collaborative is two unique parishes working together with one focus on Jesus Christ. We exist to spread the good news of our salvation through Jesus and to help each other and all our brothers and sisters accept God’s immeasurable love for us all. We do this by coming together to worship, by celebrating God’s sacraments, by evangelizing through our service to others and by fostering a faith community where all are welcome.

SAUGUS CATHOLICS COLLABORATIVE 9

Our Collaborative Pastoral Plan Since 2008, the Parishes of Saint Margaret and Blessed Sacra-ment in Saugus have been working together in spreading the Good News. In 2012, Cardinal Seán O’Malley called us to de-velop a culture of planning in the Archdiocese, so that we can become more effective evangelizers of the Gospel. This Newsletter will be our opportunity to share the Saugus Catholics Collaborative Pastoral Plan with you. We are part of Phase 2, which began in June of 2014 with our new Pastor, Fr. Tim Kelleher and Parochial Vicar, Fr. Michael Farrell. Our hope is that the plan will be accepted by Cardinal Sean for imple-mentation beginning this summer.

A COLLABORATIVE IS: One, two, or three Parishes who share...

• A Pastor • A Pastoral Team • A Collaborative Pastoral Council • A Local Pastoral Plan

... but remain distinct in: • Identity • Assets and obligations • Buildings (including churches) • Parish Finance Council
