A MESSAGE FROM FR. TIM

2 THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER APRIL 10, 2016

Doubt is such a strong feeling. In my mind, there are at

least two types of doubt; one that causes you to explore

and find out more and the other creates a barrier to any

possibility that it is true. In today’s gospel we see Thomas

who doubts that Jesus has been raised from the dead. Even

though the report of his resurrection comes from friends, he

will not believe. As he says “Unless I see the mark of the

nails in his hands and put my finger into the nail marks and

put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”

As the gospel indicates, Thomas comes to believe because

the risen Lord himself stood before him. Jesus says to

Thomas “do not be unbelieving, but believe.” If Thomas

had not had the encounter with Jesus would he have ever

believed? Look at what he would have missed out on. Is

that what Jesus means when he refers to the hardness of

heart or to the stiff-necked people, people who are not

open to the possibility and thus miss out on the reality.

As I was thinking about this I recalled a book that I have

read not too long ago, entitled “Proof of Heaven” by Eben

Alexander, M.D. Quoting from the dust cover of the book

“A highly trained neurosurgeon who had operated on

thousands of brains in the course of his career, Alexander

knew that what people of faith call the “soul” is really a

product of brain chemistry. Near-death experiences, he

would have been the first to explain, might feel real to the

people having them, but in truth they are simply fantasies

produced by brains under extreme stress.”

Suffering a rare illness in which he was in a deep coma for

seven days and being given up for dead he recovers. He

tells of his experience and how it has impacted his life and

the direction of his life. He finds himself, fully recovered

against all odds, against medical science, actively trying to

spread the word of the Divine and His miraculous powers.

He thinks of all those patients who had told him of stories of

near-death experiences and how he had tried to convince

them that they were not real and all caused

by the brain.

Many of us will never have the experience

of Thomas or of Eben Alexander but we all

have small miraculous moments. We some-

times try to explain them away as chance,

luck etc. Does doubt become an obstacle of

sharing in the blessings of God? I wonder

if we were to entertain or explore the

promises of God if it would not open other

doors for us.

The world is full of miraculous possibilities.

Jesus says the kingdom is at hand, in the

here and the now. He knows our reaction

and he says to us, “do not be unbelieving,

but believe.”

Fr. Tim

COLLABORATIVE UPDATES

Catholic Appeal 2016

The 2016 Catholic Appeal response from St. Margaret’s and Blessed Sacrament is off to a good start. At St. Margaret’s, 76 donors have contributed $14,705 towards a goal of $18,828 or 78%. At Blessed Sacrament, 95 donors have contributed $19,750 towards a goal of $28,537 or 69%. These donations are used to support more than 50 ministries which serve the needs of all parishes within our Archdio-cese, including both parishes of our Saugus Collaborative. These ministries have a profound influence on the lives of so many by helping to pass on our faith to young and new Catholics, by supporting the priests, deacons, seminarians and other religious and all those who offer their lives to serve us. If you did not receive a pledge form in the mail, please pick one up at the church or the Collaborative Offices. You can also make a pledge on line by go-ing to: bostoncatholicappeal.org. and click-ing on the Donate Now link. Thank you in advance for your support of this year's Catholic Appeal.

Mass of Anointing

Saturday, April 23, 2016

11:00 a.m.

In the Blessed Sacrament

Parish Hall

Sponsored by St Stephen Ministry .

The Sacrament of the Sick is an important encounter with Jesus who walks with us as we deal with the often-difficult limitations that affect us in illness or as we get older. The Sac-rament is to be celebrated with those who are seriously ill, undergoing surgery or advanced in years. The celebration of the Sacrament within the Mass includes the priest’s laying on of hands on the heads of those to be anointed, the offering of prayer by the community of faith and the anointing of the sick with blessed oil.

It is also an opportunity for us as a community to acknowledge the gift of their presence in our midst and to reach out to them in a small way with our love and concern.

The liturgy and luncheon that follows will be in the Blessed Sacrament Parish Hall to

cut down on the distance you will have to travel Please, if you are planning on attending, call the Collaborative Offices at

781-233-2497 or email [email protected] no later than April 15, 2016. If you would like to attend but are in need of transportation please call or email as indicated above. We do want you to join us and we will do what we can to make this a rewarding and uplifting experience for you.

Do come!

We look forward to joining you in prayer. There will also be a special blessing for all who care for the sick and the elderly in the day-to-day activities of living.

Protecting our Souls from dangers on the Internet

Many people feel that the internet is a play ground for immoral desires a they think no one can observe their web surfing habits. But we must remember Christ's words that Our Heavenly Father sees all that is done in secret (see Matthew 6:6). With that in mind, using filtering software on a computer to protect from immoral content is worthy of consideration. While there are some pay solutions there are also free options that can be configured to filter all Internet traffic for a single computer or for a local network, such as, all the devices that connect to your home WiFi. It does requires a bit of knowledge of how the Internet works. Fr. Michael will host a session for anyone that wishes to filter content on a computer connected to a home internet connection. Join Fr. Michael if you wish to filter for any of the following:

Food Fast Was a Great Success! Our young people, along with the Saugus Catholics Collaborative, collected over $4,600 for three charities before and during FOOD FAST. This event helped our youth explore the reality of hunger and injustice in a world of plenty and came face-to-face with the impact of hunger on nearly 1 billion people.

Catholic Relief Services $2000 We discovered how Catholic Relief Services supports people that are hungry in acquiring food and gaining long-term food security. Central to this exploration of faith and justice, participants were challenged as disciples of Jesus to discover how together we can effect a positive change in communities around the world.

Hope for the Children Foundation Inc. $1600 We learned from it’s creator, Tony Bellizzi, that the Hope for the Children Foundation conducts specific projects and events and raises funds to expand opportunities and increase the development of young people around the world. We heard how they provide funding and facilitate the sharing of human and material resources for specific projects always at the grassroots level.

Chelsea Project Opening Doors $1000 Charlie Rustigian, recently confirmed, testified to his experience with and efforts to address youth homelessness in Chelsea, MA. Our parish collected donations on Good Friday for the Chelsea Project Opening Doors, which helps address so many needs of our Chelsea students living in shelters. Charlie also raised on his own over $1000 for the FOOD FAST itself.
