Welcome to Term 2 and the third edition of our monthly exposé of everything great happening at ‘the best school in town’. We should be rightly proud of this transformation practice - the betterment is profound! Parent-Teacher Interviews were also conducted during Weeks 10 & 11 of Term 2. Thank you to parents and carers for the extremely high attendance rate and also the very positive feedback regarding interview experiences. This week students will learn about and embrace ANZAC values. Parents and family are invited to join us for our ANZAC Day Commemorative Service tomorrow, Tuesday 1 May at 11:45am followed by morning tea in the Hall. As principal of EPS, I felt very proud to represent our school at the ANZAC Day Service hosted by Valentine Lions Club in Allambee Park, Valentine last Wednesday 25 April. Eleebana PS Student Leader of the Month – Madeline B Madeline (Maddie) is a 2018 School Councillor and 11 years old. Her favourite subjects are maths and English. She enjoys playing touch football, dancing, gymnastics tennis and netball. Maddie loves to eat oranges and watermelon and really enjoys tacos and ‘mum’s homemade sausage rolls’. The things Maddie likes most about EPS are ‘all the lovely teachers and all my friends. I also love how everyone helps each other to get through the tough times and enjoys everyone’s good times’. Maddie said that she became a leader ‘because I believed in myself as I have been a leader my whole life being the eldest of 4 children’. She also said the belief of her friends gave her the courage to seek a leadership position – ‘believe in yourself and you can do it’.

Maddie hopes to leave EPS knowing she has done her best as a leader, is respected by her peers who may want to follow in her footsteps and strive for leadership themselves: ‘I think the job of being a leader is helping people get through things and being there for all’. If Maddie was principal for a day, she would have a big dance party and let the students have ‘a chill day and the teachers too’. When Maddie finishes school, she would like to become a teacher or a hair stylist to the stars.

Department Restructure of Principal Networks and Directors, Educational Leadership The Department has undertaken a restructure of Principal Networks and Directors, Educational Leadership commencing Day 1, Term 2, 2018. As you would be aware from previous communication, Mrs Bailey was successful in gaining via merit selection one of the newly created director positions. For your information, this restructure has the following implications for Eleebana PS:

• Our Operational Directorate is Regional North • Our Executive Director, School Performance: Tim McCallum • Our Principal Network: Lake Macquarie North • Our Director, Educational Leadership: Louise Gallagher • Our network schools: Argenton PS, Barnsley PS, Biddabah PS, Cardiff HS, Cardiff North PS, Cardiff PS, Cardiff South PS,

Edgeworth Heights PS, Edgeworth PS, Elermore Vale PS, Garden Suburb PS, Glendale East PS, Glendale HS, Hillsborough PS, Wakefield School, Warners Bay HS, Warners Bay PS, West Wallsend HS, West Wallsend PS.

I would take this opportunity to publically welcome Mrs Louise Gallagher as our Director, Educational Leadership. As a school we report directly to Mrs Gallagher and very much look forward to working with her. Thank you also, and farewell, to Mr Steve Harris for his excellent support of Eleebana PS as Director, Public Schools. Mr Harris will be leading the Glenrock Principal Network.

Scripture (SRE) commences… Special Religious Education – ‘Scripture’ will commence this term running for approximately 10 weeks on Tuesdays for 30 minutes with each class group. Classes involved this term are: KD, KKH, KN, 3BM, 3ES, 3JB, 4R & 4W. Scripture lessons will be kindly provided by Jenny Harris and Lyndon Keeley who are both members of religious organisations approved to provide special religious education in public schools. Students whose parents or carers have elected for their child/ren NOT to attend scripture undertake supervised alternate activities. A reminder that scripture preferences can be updated via parent/carer written consent/non-consent at any time.

CAPA Groups 2018 – Years 3-5 CAPA (Creative & Performing Arts) Groups are the groups Year 3-5 students elect to join, and perform in, at EPS Spotlight. Groups run every Wednesday afternoon from 2:10-3:00pm during Terms 2 & 3 in the lead-up to Spotlight 2018 that will be held on Monday 24 & Tuesday 25 September at Newcastle Exhibition and Convention Centre - NEX. Teachers elect to coordinate and prepare an item with their chosen group. Options this year will include: aerobics, drumming group, drama, boys dance, girls dance, baton twirling, and choir. Students attend CAPA Groups irrespective of Spotlight participation as these groups meet NESA creative and performing arts syllabus requirements.

Canteen News Congratulations to Juley Troy & Raychel Reiman and the Canteen Committee who have made a great start in the canteen, as evidenced by canteen recoding a net profit of $3721.48 for the month ended 31 March 2018. This is a dramatic turnaround – a profitable canteen, run by our P&C, directly results in the provision of increased services, facilities and resources to our students.

• Don’t forget: ANZAC Week Meal Deals available this week – no online ordering available.

Mother’s Day Stall Our 2018 Mother’s Day Stall will be held on Tuesday 8 - Junior School and Wednesday 9 May – Senior School. Students are encouraged to bring $2-$10 to purchase gifts for the special ladies in their life. The P&C Fundraising Committee will focus on building student life skills with a market type atmosphere and designated sections, such as: confectionery, stationery, gardening, jewellery, kitchen, items for nan or gran. A reminder that donations are being sought this week for the stall and can be left in the collection box at the office.

Looking forward to an excellent term, Dr. Carl Leonard – Principal (rel.)

6C have been focussing on Imaginative Texts last term. ALL students have extended their knowledge and skills in this area which is evident in their test results. To conclude our learning of Imaginative Texts for Term 1, students have composed a narrative based on the topic of ‘Abandoned/ Haunted House’. Miss Crowley was blown away with 6C’s use of complex sentences, ideas, devices and overall improvement.

Just a reminder that 6C’s assembly item will be the first Friday of Term 2. We don’t want to give away too much but we will just say that it’ll be a ‘groovy’ time. Looking forward to seeing you all there!

Library News Term One We have had a fun, fantastic and productive term in the library. Junior School continue to develop their digital literacy skills as we explore the endless possibilities of the library management system Oliver/Orbit. Students can do lots of amazing things - they can check their borrowing history, select, reserve, review and borrow resources as well as engage with a format that changes regularly and is cool to use. It seems ancient history (but was in fact just a over a year ago) that it was only the librarian who could access the library catalogue! During library lessons Senior School are investigating the design process and will begin researching different manufacturing systems. Oliver allows us to update and add links to on-topic websites targeted to your child's reading abilities making research meaningful and enjoyable. It is particularly helpful to add links suggested by our students as this encourages others to see what class members are finding relevant and useful - a really collaborative approach to learning. You can explore some of our links-to-learning on the Oliver news page. Junior school are learning about non-fiction texts and how to search for items using Orbit. Check out our library WOW words on the Orbit homepage which support our focus on digital literacy through the use of Oliver/Orbit. Published authors at EPS! We are fortunate to have some published authors in our school community! Kirilee Furlong has written the hug - a warm and welcoming read about the power of hugs and Ant Wood has produced two beautiful books about Charli, a very cheeky cockatoo - Flaming Charli and Dancing Charli. These books are available in the library and can be read as part of the PRC. Downloading eBooks Students can borrow eBooks by - 1. Borrowing through Oliver (our library system)

• login to Oliver via the student portal and search for a book title/author • if the eBook icon appears, click on the book title • click on the "borrow" option, which redirects you to the ePlatform website and you can instantly read the

book on your desktop, laptop or device 2. Borrowing through the ePlatform website

• follow the link eps.wheelers.co to go directly to the ePlatform website where you can browse and borrow eBooks (sign in using DET login)

• you can read the eBook on your desktop, laptop or device Ashton Scholastic Book Club: Buying books through bookclub earns much needed rewards for the school which go towards purchasing new books for our library. Last year we raised close to $1500 in rewards, and that doesn't include book fair! Please remember we no longer accept money at school for book club. All orders are done online through their website using the LOOP system. Please note there is an option "gift" to choose when placing your order if you do not wish for the delivery to be sent to your child. These deliveries will be left in the school office. The bookclub is run by volunteers. We are very keen for anyone who would like to help. It involves sorting books for delivery to classrooms twice a term. This takes us about 1-1.5hr in total, obviously the more people the less time it will take!! If anyone would like to assist with book club please come and see us in the library. Use of BYOD at Recess: Please note: children are not to bring their devices into the library for play at recess. This includes the use of game-containing USBs. A small number of library laptops are available during this time along with many other creative activities including craft, puppets, games, drawing and of course reading. Premier's Reading Challenge: Congratulations to these avid readers who have ALREADY finished the challenge: Ezra, Alazar, Benjamin, Connor, Zane, Lucia, Aiden, Toby, Flynn, Cooper, Samuel, Jordan, Zack, Grace, Makaylah, Ohad, Archie and Thomas. Class 5P are leading!! Don't forget to print out your reading logs when you've finished and bring them to the library. Please pop in to ask for assistance if you need help with this. And remember, all students can check their borrowing history (which lists all items borrowed from the library) through Oliver/Orbit. This may assist you when recording books for the challenge. A warm welcome..... Next term we welcome back our Teacher/Librarian Mrs Jenna Hopper. We would like to thank Mrs Barbara Tilly and Mrs Nadine Masia for their hard work in helping to run the library this term and also Mrs Sam Jenkins who has not only organised Ashton Scholastic Bookclub but spent hours ordering the non-fiction section, making the library an even better learning space! Love the library....Kids who read succeed!
