ALISSA SWAN

I was raised Catholic, but at age 15 I got pregnant with my son. And since

good Catholics don't flaunt their trash in public, it was understood I would

not be going back to church. So, with my baby in one hand and my ticket to

hell in the other hand, I put my nose to the grindstone, with bitterness and

resentment, vowing to do more, to have more and prove more too all those

hypocrites.

I graduated high school, became a manager at Wall-mart, bought a house

and had another child. By age 20 I had more and accomplished more than

my parents, had a future with no limits and most importantly I'd proved them

all wrong, I needed no one.

But when my son was 5, he became very sick and I had to rush him to the

hospital. The doctors quarantined us and ran multiple tests on him, but they

couldn't figure out what was wrong. This went on for days. I was at my

breaking point and willing to give anything, even my life to anyone who

could save him. I cried out in anger and desperation “GOD! HEY, GOD! “I

mean I had heard of God before but had never given any thought of talking

to Him. After all, that's what priest was for. I cried out again “GOD! YEAH

YOU! THIS GREAT GOD! WHERE ARE YOU? IF THERE IS A

GOD, IF YOU’RE REALLY REAL, I NEED YOU NOW! MY SON

NEEDS YOU. YOU HAVE TO COME! YOU SAY YOU LOVE US,

THEN WHERE ARE YOU? PLEASE!! If you come, if you show up I'll

give you everything COME ON GOD! THIS GOD OF

LOVE! WHERE ARE YOU? " Through all of my tears and screams I

didn't even know if I believed it was possible.

Then a cloud appeared in the hospital room and descended upon me, envel-

oping me, the way a parent wraps their arms around their child. And peace

came over me and the fear in my heart was calmed and somehow I knew my

son would be o.k. I would be o.k. God had showed up with His tangible,

arms around me. From that moment, my life belonged to God. With the re-

alization that my past didn't disqualify me from having a relationship with

Him, or that such a tangible relationship could exist. I would never again

question the validity of a God who could show up and touch me.

I view my life differently now. The things I once aspired to prove don't

hold the same shine anymore. My reasons to make friends and family jealous

don't exist .God has taught me a lot, and asked a lot of me since that day. But

I find my heart filled with joy the deeper my relationship goes.
