The communication was organized quite one-dimensional,based on the idea of a straight-lined progress in technology

Example:series of axle-bearings showing the linear development


Change of content, style and communication starting with the 1950ties:

Hands-on gallery was dismantled, replaced by some sceneries

Start of a series of 161 temporary exhibitions until the 1990ties:

• 1964: 40th anniversary of the Austrian broadcasting company• 1968: 50th anniversary of the museum• 1969 and 1971: Space flight to the moon


Until 1992: some changes in the galleries

The idea of an annexe failed due to missing money

To gain more exhibition space two actions were taken:

A new entrance on the basment level

The two domes were elevatedup to the second floor

Four new galleries were built

Solution for the railway collection:Plans for a new annexe and IMAX theatre


The well directed usage of Science Centre elements like hands-on or other communication strategies like science shows within a ‘conventional’ exhibition with historical artefacts opens a new way of visitor oriented presentation.It might help to bridge the gap between these two cultures of displaying technology and science.
