Agnès Varda’s artistic philosophy is as delicate as it is resistant. It looks at the small things and renders them large and unforgettable. Perhaps it is the infl uence of photography that gives her gaze a different sensibil-ity, taking the everyday as its starting point but then launching it into another dimension. Her characters are wanderers, restless, but capable of unexpected smiles.

Today’s fi lms also seek to move away from the topical in order to have a wider scope. That’s the case with the surreal comedy of Martín Rejtman, Dos disparos, which translates an adolescent’s angst into an invisible bullet, as though that out-of-tune note that sometimes throbs in each one of us had a physical equivalent. LIEW Seng Tat’s project also includes the unnatural in the ordinary; starting with a Herzogian image, a house in the forest moved by the force of a whole village, Lelaki Harapan Dunia ends up combining the theme of immigration with a story of ghosts and madness. Defi nitely veering towards the alienation side is Buz-zard by Joel Potrykus, who returns to Locarno with his over-the-top comedy and a character who has an irreverent take on the employment crisis.

Madness, the free expression of oneself in a world that is utopically refl ected in this wildness, is the most important lesson coming from Rogério Sganzerla’s fi lms. The screening of the restored version of Copaca-bana Mon Amour, accompanied by Helena Ignez’s new short, Poder dos Afetos, is not only another step towards the recovery of this experience, but an event to be welcomed as though it was a world première.

È riconosciuta come una delle registe più grandi, Agnès Varda, ma sarebbe meglio dire semplicemente che è nel pantheon della storia del cinema, senza distinzioni di genere. Fotografa, cineasta, artista, è un personaggio centrale della cultura dalla metà del ‘900 a oggi. Sessant’anni di carriera, anticipatrice e poi compagna di strada della Nouvelle Vague, sempre all’avanguardia, persino nell’utilizzo del digitale e nel superamento del confi ne tra fi ction e documentario.

Un’autobiografi a, Agnès Varda, l’aveva già scritta nel 1994, Varda par Agnès: quattro anni dopo la morte dell’amato Jacques Demy e un anno prima dell’ulti-mo fi lm di fi nzione, Les Cent et Une Nuits de Simon Cinéma.

Un’autobiografi a fi lmata poi è cosa quasi unica, e Varda l’ha fatta nel 2008 con Les Plages d’Agnès, il più recente dei suoi lungometraggi realizzato per i suoi 80 anni. Una lunga cavalcata d’immagi ni e ricordi tra privato e pubblico, che nella vita della cineasta parigina non sono mai stati troppo separati. Una confessione libera, sincera, senza pudori ma con delicatezza, quasi su tutto. Gio-ie e dolori di un’esistenza trattati con ironia, la giusta malinconia e senza senti-mentalismi superfl ui. Les Plages d’Agnès non è un autoritratto – lo era già Les Glaneurs et la glaneuse - e ancor meno un’autocelebrazione. Dal racconto esce il carattere di una donna minuta e di grande talento, curiosa, colta, vitale, pronta a mettersi in gioco, tenace, senza fronzoli; soprattutto risaltano i tanti lavori e le tante persone che ha incontrato o con le quali ha condiviso momenti o anni. Il

fi lo conduttore sono le spiagge, quella belga dove trascorreva le estati da bambi-na (Varda è nata a Bruxelles), quella mediterranea di Sète dove sfollò durante la guerra e girò il fi lm di debutto, La Pointe courte, quella del Pacifi co a Los Angeles dove trascorse due anni e girò Documenteur (1980). Oppure la spiaggia estiva della Senna a Parigi e quella creata per l’occasione in rue Daguerre, dove ha casa e uffi ci. Camminando a ritroso sulla sabbia in una dichiarazione d’intenti inizia il fi lm, che prosegue tra vita intima e grande Storia, utilizzando le immagini dei suoi lavori come fossero un album di famiglia.

You crossed many different forms of cinema during your career, from fi ction to documentary, from fi rst person movie to video art. What pushed you to continue your research?

I’m a very curious person. I’m curious about getting to know people, situations, different countries. I soon understood that it’s important to have necessary tools to realize own movies and imagine each time the most suitable form without fear. Now I’m converting my fi rst movies on DCP in order to screen them in theaters. I ask myself about these changes, but I believe it’s important to preserve collective viewing. Indeed I’m very happy about the invitation in Piazza Grande by Carlo Chatrian.

Are you thrilled screening such a personal movie like Les Plages d’Agnès in Piazza Grande?

Defi nitely. I realized I wanted to talk about others telling a story about myself, people I had the chance to meet and that were foundamental in my life. I hope is a fl uid story, like a ship crossing that merges memories and different moments to share with people. I hope not to arrive in Locarno as a “dinosaur” from the past, but fi nding a free dialogue with the present.

In Les Glaneurs et la glaneuse you faced a thorny subject for capitalist society, focusing your being a fi lmaker in the passage to digital technologies.

I end up in the right time. I was interested not only describing these people who live with what the world wasted away, but I also wanted them to express their opinions. My subject needed a new technology, I had to create a one on one relationship and only in a second moment involve a phonic. We have to reach others tiptoe, especially if they live on the fringes of society.

You created two unforgettable female characters such as Clèo in Clèo de 5 à 7 and Mona in Sans toit ni loi. What they represent for you today?

They are two women that are going to face the death in deeply different ways. Clèo, even if is sick, faces with serenity her fate. On the contrary Mona is more dark and her depart marks in a more defi nitive way. They sure are two characters that anticipate time.

Have you ever considered yourself part of a movement?

Never, I didn’t want to. From an artistic point of view everybody talks about Nouvelle Vague, but it wasn’t a real movement. From a political point of view I always refused to join

a party. Even in women movement, in which I actively participated, I didn’t want to be a spokesperson, but always stay among people during demonstrations.

What is your advice to young directors that are just starting their career?

It’s foundamental being curious and withstand, always have the mental curiosity to carry on his own personal research, against all odds. For this reason all my battles are today focused to protect free expression in movies against the predominance of television, and women’s rights.

Alice, non è la prima volta che sei in giuria in un festival internazionale...

No, ma questa volta devo decidere i premi uffi ciali di un evento prestigioso come Locarno. È fantastico, ho la possibilità di confrontarmi con tante idee di cinema diverse. Non ero mai stata qui; è un festival bellissimo e con una dimensione straordinaria, molto più raccolto di Cannes, si vive cinema ogni minuto. Mio padre, che insegna cinema all’università, non è mai stato così fi ero di me.

Come stai lavorando con il resto della giuria?

Benissimo. Connie Nielsen è una donna e un’attrice straordinaria, Thomas Arslan e DIAO Yinan sono dei grandi cineasti; l’altro giorno sono riuscita a vedere qui in sala El Sicario. Room 164 di Gianfranco Rosi e adesso devi trovarmi assolutamente una copia di Sacro GRA. Confrontarsi con talenti di culture così diverse è uno stimolo eccezionale e speriamo si rispecchi anche nelle nostre scelte.

Per te è una condizione normale, d’altronde.

È vero, ne The Rite ho lavorato con lo svedese Mikael Håfström, in Elysium con Neill Blomkamp, sudafricano che vive in Canada da quando ha diciotto anni. Sono sempre stata molto curiosa, è la ragione per cui faccio fi lm molto diversi tra loro, da Io sono leggenda a El ardor di Pablo Fendrik, diretto da un argentino e in cui lavoro con un messicano, Gael García Bernal, che mi aveva detto che Locarno è fantastica.

Come procede il progetto di Cinema 23, l’associazione di cui fai parte che promuove le cinematografi e latinoamericane nel mondo?

Benissimo, l’8 agosto è stata annunciata la data della cerimonia di premiazione della prima edizione dei Fenix Award, gli Oscar del cinema latinoamericano, che si terrà il 30 ottobre a Città del Messico: stiamo lavorando alle nomination. È importantissimo promuoverci fuori dai confi ni delle lingue spagnola e portoghese.

Sei contenta che il Festival del fi lm Locarno abbia scelto il Brasile per la Carte Blanche

di quest’anno?

Certo, credo sia anche una delle ragioni per cui sono qui. Non sono riuscita a vedere nessuno dei lavori portati, ma dare la possibilità a registi, sceneggiatori, produttori e attori brasiliani di poter parlare con i loro colleghi da tutto il mondo è un valore di cui abbiamo bisogno.

TwoLuminousSoulsOne day, two souls that were meant to meet stumbled onto one another. Only, one of them was unable to recognize its match in the other, and the journey towards this recognition became the mis-sion of a lifetime. A short, fragile human life.

Inspired by the true story of Marie Heur-tin, a girl born at the end of the 19th century with the combined affl ictions of blind-ness, muteness and deafness, Jean-Pierre Améris’s fi lm is a poignant drama of indi-vidual challenge.

Newcomer Ariana Rivoire is a radiant revelation as the young handicapped girl who exults in the joy of discovering mean-ing and the world’s bounties. And angelic French actress Isabelle Carré is Sister Mar-guerite, a nun who was sanctifi ed for her selfl ess dedication to Marie Heurtin.

When she meets Marie, the young girl is a wild, mucky little thing, locked in the obscurity of her isolated conscience. Her parents, despite loving and caring for their only child, couldn’t fi nd ways to unlock the door of Marie’s dark cave, and the girl can only but react instinctively against what she identifi es as aggressions from an elu-sive outside world.

Yet Sister Marguerite feels with a per-fect certainty that Marie was presented to her for a reason. She was called to help her, and neither the skepticism of her hier-archy nor the bruises induced by the wild child can dent her determination. The nun knows that her fragile health doesn’t leave her much time to succeed, but she has no intention to save her resources, whether spiritual or physical, and gives all of her small self to this divine mission.

One sensation, repeated over and over, in the hope that Marie would connect it to an object, allowing it to become a word. A single, mundane word. That’s all it takes to unlock the door and open it onto the world. And it’s everything.

1993, l’assedio a Dubrovnik è terminato, ma i rumori della guerra ancora ri-suonano. Le tracce delle ferite sono mal celate, dalle abitazioni alla vita che gli abitanti hanno ripreso a condurre un senso di inquietudine ancora palpita. In questo clima, Linda torna dalla Svizzera con il padre e in un giorno di sole si per-de con l’amica Eta sull’altura boscosa che sovrasta la città. Le due adolescenti giocano a scambiarsi identità e ruoli fi no a quando tutto precipita... Rimasta sola Linda si sdoppia, prendendo il posto di Eta...

Se la trama del secondo lungometraggio di Andrea Štaka si può condensare in poche righe, più diffi cile è riassumerne il senso. Cure – The Life of Another è davvero, come indica il sottotitolo, il tentativo di penetrare nella mente di chi è altro da noi. Il prossimo che ci assomiglia e a cui vogliamo sostituirci, ma anche l’adolescente la cui mentalità appare un crogiolo inestricabile di sentimenti con-traddittori. Fedele alla linea di un racconto che si fa a fi or di pelle e che sceglie di raccontare dall’interno i suoi personaggi (anche qui vi è una giovane ragazza), Andrea Štaka non esita a mescolare sogno e realtà, fantasmi e illusioni, desideri e paure. Lo fa con ancora maggiore decisione e coraggio rispetto al fortunato fi lm d’esordio Das Fräulein – che qui a Locarno aveva avuto il Pardo d’oro, otto anni fa. A dispetto di una luce abbagliante e dei contrasti forti forniti dal blu del mare su cui il verde dei boschi si staglia come un disegno in rilievo, Cure è un fi lm sotterraneo, che racconta molto più di quanto non dica di un paese e dello stato panico di vuoto in cui la guerra lo ha lasciato. È un fi lm in cui il sud vibra come se ascoltato a distanza. Un fi lm in cui allo stesso modo l’adolescenza smarrita diventa uno stato d’animo, disperso tra un’infanzia irraggiungibile e una matu-rità abbracciata troppo presto.

On the hottest day of the year, a regular Ar-gentine teenager named Mariano (Rafael Federman, sunken-eyed and deadpan) re-turns home from a night of dancing, goes for a swim, mows the lawn, fi nds a gun in the tool shed, and implusively shoots himself twice, once in the head and once in the stomach. Miraculously, he survives, and life goes on – and Martín Rejtman’s lat-est minimialist, Bressonian comedy shows how the most dramatic of causes can have the least dramatic of effects. The family dog goes missing. While practicing the fl ute, Mariano discovers that one of the bullets is still lodged inside, giving him a doubled sound, and disturbing the performance of his ancient music fl ute quartet. His dis-turbed mother suggests Mariano move in with his brother Ezequiel, who draws closer to Ana, an employee at their favorite a fast-food restaurant. A trip to the beach ends up with another girl, Lucía, returning to Bue-nos Aires to audition for the quartet. And then, suddenly, the kids are left behind.

A new Martín Rejtman fi lm – three of his works since 1992 have premiered in Lo-carno – is a rarer occurrence than the World Cup; in between fi lm projects, Rejtman is an acclaimed author, and Dos disparos’ precision and sense of detail is just as much literary as it is cinematic. It is immediately recognizable as a work by its author, who creates an artifi cial, material world of semi-automaton teenagers, and imbeds objects that create sonic disturbances: cellphone rings and alarm beeps riddle the fi lm’s careful soundtrack. Supremely calculated – you could say it’s his L’Argent – Rejtman presents the summer’s events in a way that illustrate the logic of chance: one encoun-ter begets another, yet the scenes accumu-late rather than fl ow naturally. Everything happens, in an intricate way, yet nothing happens. Life happens.

LIEW Seng Tat è sicuramente il caso di un cineasta-architetto. Lelaki Harapan Dunia (Men Who Save the World) non è solo un fi lm che racconta la storia di una casa che doveva essere un regalo di matrimonio e che diventa regno di fantasmi prima e ri-storo per migranti in fuga poi. Piuttosto è un fi lm-casa, in cui ogni mattone s’incastra con precisione e sapienza dalle fondamenta fi no al tetto. Con pochi tocchi di sottile ironia si entra lentamente nelle due colonne por-tanti sulle quali si edifi ca il fi lm. Da un lato Pak Awang, che non ha i soldi per comprare una casa alla fi glia e che, aiutato dagli altri abitanti del villaggio, trasporta fuori dalla

foresta una vecchia casa abbandonata con l’idea di restaurarla. Dall’altro Solomon, im-migrato nigeriano in fuga da Kuala Lumpur, che capita nei pressi del villaggio e comincia a usare la casa come rifugio e poi a viverci. In mezzo si affollano fantasmi (e, in una mol-tiplicazione quasi surrealista, anche cam-melli): quelli che la gente del villaggio pensa stiano infestando la casa di Pak Awang. Così Solomon attinge allo statuto di doppio fan-tasma, per lo Stato e per il villaggio; mentre Pak Awang comincia una battaglia contro la superstizione che lentamente lo conduce a un imprevisto isolamento, con tutto il villag-gio impegnato in estenuanti veglie notturne

per scacciare gli spettri. Quanto ancora po-trà durare? Naturalmente pochissimo. Gli equivoci si accumulano fi no a una sorta di benefi ca implosione, dove la realtà sembra poco a poco perdere nitidezza ed entrare in un’altra dimensione. È l’arte della com-media, quel rarissimo senso delle entrate e delle uscite, quella fi ducia per l’avventura del fuori campo, quel corpo pirotecnico d’in-trecci e derive, fi no al progressivo e inatteso subentrare del tragico, di cui LIEW Seng Tat si conferma già maestro.

The court jester of Grand Rapids, Michi-gan, Joel Potrykus, and the winner of Best Director in Concorso Cineasti del presente in 2012 for Ape, returns to Locarno with his merry band of Sob Noisse collaborators with perhaps the most acclaimed American independent fi lm of the year. Joshua Burge – an acting machine of overconfi dent, semi-psychotic intensity who should be co-star-ring as a master villain in Hollywood block-busters – here plays one Marty Jackitansky, a petty scam artist temporarily employed at a bank, supremely dedicated to one thing in life: doing as little actual work as possible to get by, as work seems beneath him. When he enacts a moronic plan to embezzle from his employer – loosely recalling Richard Pry-or’s salami slicing from Superman III (fi lm references abound in Buzzard, foremost the taloned Freddy Krueger glove that acts as Buzzard’s main symbol) – Marty fi nally fi nds himself a bit over his head. Potrykus

himself co-stars as Derek, Marty’s foil, a slightly more diligent, but just as pathetic, bank employee who has turned his father’s basement into a “party zone,” where Marty relocates once he’s “on the run.” Together the two reach new lows of pathetic modern slackerdom. (Boys will be boys.)

In creating a realistic American hor-ror story, with an atmosphere of bubbling threat that is always on the verge of ex-ploding, Potrykus has upped his game on all levels in Buzzard. The political commen-tary seen earlier in Ape exists here as both as text and metaphor, seen most clearly through the repeated scenes of (food) con-sumption: not only does Potrykus give us the most revolting occurrence of eating pasta ever recorded, but also Buzzard does for the underrated snack food Bugles what The Third Man did for cuckoo clocks. This is truly a fi lmmaker of the present.

In Locarno for the last two years with a fi lm in the Con-corso internazionale (Los mejores temas) and as a ju-ror for the Cineasti del presente competition, Nicolás Pereda isn’t a fi lmmaker that one would think of as a director for hire. Though he came on board this project with a conventional screenplay already written, Pereda managed to turn Los ausentes (The Absent) into a mes-merizing personal work that speaks to his own fi lmmak-ing themes and aesthetic concerns, and, in moving in a more minimalist direction, with long, gorgeously shot, Tarkovsky-like sequences, even can be said to heighten them. What little plot remains in this holistic piece con-cerns an impoverished man in his mid-seventies, alone in the world, who loses his property, located near the beach in the south of Mexico. As death approaches, he begins to lose his connection to the world as well as his mind, and on what might be his deliberate fi nal jour-ney, visions of the past appear in the form of his earlier self, played by Pereda mainstay Gabino Rodríguez. Along with a focused attention on the place his protagonist is about to lose, Pereda notes that one of his concerns in this patient fi lm was fi lming the man’s body as the re-ceptacle of space and time: the same could be said of the relationship of the fi lm to the viewer.

Tutto o niente, insieme

“Tu, con la tua inclinazione a non piegarti, continui a essere lo Zarathustra del Cine-ma, il punto più alto di ogni paradosso e contraddizione! Di ogni luce!”. Così anni fa Júlio Bressane ricordava Rogério Sganzerla. Basterebbero queste parole per Copacaba-na Mon Amour, uno dei fi lm più esplosivi di tutta la storia del cinema, che Locarno presenta nella sua copia restaurata in prima mondiale (oppure quelle di Sganzerla stes-

so, che lo defi niva “un’allucinata miscela di estasi di tutti i tipi!”). Opera inarrivata, una delle sei prodotte e girate in pochi mesi di folle estasi creativa nel 1970 dalla neonata (e poi subito esiliata) Belair fondata insieme da Bressane e Sganzerla. Protagonista Hele-na Ignez, che qui è Sônia Silk, la belva ossi-genata, prostituta che batte sulla spiaggia di Copacabana col sogno di diventare una can-tante di Rádio Nacional. Lucida corsa a tam-

bur battente di un cineasta sismografo, che vedeva nell’immagine la possibilità di una nuova vita minerale, di un’arte selvaggia, te-nera, ramifi cata. Copacabana Mon Amour è un colloquio infi nito tenuto sull’orlo dell’a-bisso, fra le macerie d’una terra malata, at-traversata da uno sguardo che sembra gene-rato direttamente dalle sue viscere.

Copacabanasull’orlo dell’abisso

Poder dos Afetos, ovvero una selva di personaggi inquietanti in continua trasformazione di costumi e di pensiero. Capacità rara quella di raccontare l’essere umano attraverso ciò che ne defi nisce l’esperienza sempre lacunosa delle cose. E chi se non la musa irri-ducibile di tutto il cinema brasiliano più rivoluzionario e non ricon-ciliato, chi se non Helena Ignez, avrebbe potuto riuscirci. Chi sareb-be stato altrettanto capace di fi lmare con tale unica astrattezza di corpi e di colori il sogno di pensare tutte le immagini insieme a tutti i loro possibili rapporti (cinema, poesia, teatro, infanzia, giovinezza, vecchiaia). E non è la prima volta. Avveniva già in Luz nas Trevas (bellissimo remake – a Locarno 2010 in Concorso – del capolavoro di Rogério Sganzerla O Bandido da Luz Vermelha, anch’esso ripro-posto dal Festival lo stesso anno). Ma in Poder dos afetos Ignez precisa l’intento pittorico: è la fi sica del colore a defi nire la vertigine antropologica. Era ed è questa la battaglia ingaggiata da una cer-ta parte della cinematografi a brasiliana (Bressane, Sganzerla): fare dell’immagine un’eterna e febbricitante riemersione del pensiero in qualsiasi punto del tempo e dello spazio. Tudo ou Nada.

Da sempre affezionato membro di quella PardoWay che anima le giornate del pubblico festivaliero tra una proiezione e l’altra, il Tea-tro Paravento ospita in questi giorni una serie di eventi organizzati da la rada e incentrati sul fi lmmaker Mauro Santini.

Con il titolo Piccole santità (quasi tutto, quasi nulla), il regista 49 enne di Fano sarà al centro di un’esposizone personale per tutto l’arco del Festival, dalle 18 alle 22 (l’ingresso è libero). Ogni sera la programmazione della mostra muterà, sempre includendo però il progetto diariodiunanno – la raccolta delle 365 foto scattate da San-tini con il proprio cellulare nel corso del 2013, in una commistione tra cinema e fotografi a.

Le serate del Paravento saranno animate anche da tre altri eventi, previsti tra le 21 e le 22. Se domenica 10 agosto i musici-sti Marco Bernacchia ed Emanuele Becheri improvviseranno sulle immagini di un fi lm muto scelto a loro insaputa, giovedì 14 ago-sto sarà presentato al pubblico il Forum socio-culturale, attivo da poco nel Locarnese. Il giorno dopo, infi ne, l’artista ginevrina Aria-ne Arlotti mostrerà il progetto d’arte girato nel West Bank (Pale-stina) e intitolato Destination Checkpoints, un tema quanto mai d’attualità. Tra Santinie santità

Realizzare una scultura che catturi l’essen-za del Festival: una sfi da con cui in passato si sono già misurati numerosi scultori, da Remo Rossi, autore della leggendaria sta-tuetta del Pardo che dal 1968 costituisce il simbolo dell’evento, a Ivo Soldini e Nag Ar-noldi. E quest’anno dell’arduo compito è stata incaricata Gabriela Spector, artista ar-gentina che dal 1994 vive e lavora in Ticino. “Il ruolo di un artista è trasformare un senti-mento, un’idea, un concetto in immagine. In

questo caso ho dialogato con i miei commit-tenti per riuscire a dar forma ai loro desideri” racconta la scultrice, che ha realizzato mol-teplici schizzi, disegni e bozzetti in cera per giungere a un’opera che, reinterpretando la fi gura del pardo, sapesse sintetizzare lo spi-rito della manifestazione. “A volte il progetto che sembra più semplice è quello che riesce a comunicare nel modo più forte”. Il risul-tato del percorso è una scultura in bronzo che fonde due elementi chiave della manife-

stazione: “si tratta di una lastra rettangolare da cui emerge la sagoma del pardo. Simbo-licamente rappresenta come un fi lm possa uscire dallo schermo per entrare nei cuori”.

Il primo esemplare della scultura è stato consegnato dall’autrice al Consigliere fede-rale Alain Berset, nel corso di un ricevimen-to dedicatogli dal Festival l’8 agosto nella cornice d’eccezione di Monte Verità.

Summer Academy

Summer Dreams AcademySince 67 years Festival del film Locarno is a great open air school of cinema, driven by the pleasure of discovery and innovation. Embracing this spirit, the Festival decided in 2010 to create Locarno Summer Academy, an education program with the goal to help developing the skills of young growing tal-ents in different fields of movie production.

Cinema&Gioventù permits to 33 young students from 17 to 21 to discover the com-plexity of cinema growing many talents. Many famous swiss directors moved their first steps thanks to Cinema&Gioventù.

Filmmakers Academy plumbs all over the world in search of 25 young particularly promising directors to put in touch with the great protagonists of the Festival, from icon directors such as Werner Herzog or Roman Polanski, to young promises artistically born in Locarno like Joel Potrykus. These meetings represent a simbolic take over from a gen-eration to another of directors that are keep-ing alive a creative and demanding cinema. This year’s Filmmakers Academy is happy to also host the talents of the Résidence of Cannes Cinéfondation.

Summer Academy

Summer Dreams AcademyDocumentary Summer School, in col-

laboration with Università della Svizzera italiana and the Semaine de la critique, allows to 20 university students of cinema and audiovisual from all over the world to enhance the new languages offered from the documentary.

Under the mentorship of Eric Kohn, chief editor of Indiewire, and Eugene Hernan-dez, vice director of Film Society of Lincoln Center, Critics Academy has become an in-ternational focus to discover new talented critics and confi rms its success with a grow-ing number of collaborations. The ten par-ticipants can publish their works on many international magazines (in addition to Par-doLive), developing an essential net for their future. From this year Critics Academy of-fers an extra program for swiss students, thanks to the collaboration of Federal Offi ce of Culture (FOC), Swiss Association of Film Journalists (SVFJ), Zürcher Hochschule der Künste (ZHdK) and Cineman.ch.

2014 sets also the beginning of a new sub-mission: Industry Academy. A step forward in the achievement to integrate the Acad-emy dimension in the heart and body of the festival. An impulse given by Nadia Dresti, in charge of Industry Offi ce and Head of Inter-national, to valorize the talent of the Festi-val del fi lm Locarno to offer to new cinema generations a platform where innovative projects can grow, both in artistic and pro-ductive way. The 9 participants of Industry Academy will have as main topic the search for new forms of distribution in a constantly evolving market.

The fi ve initiatives of Locarno Summer Academy host overall a hundred partici-pants, but selecting few talents for each category the Academy provides students of high level and the ability to look after in a personalized way the growing of these new talents.
