Her name evokes motherhood. Or its reverse. What’s more, the idea of the double is captured by a surname that suggests the other (anderen in German). Like the location where a good part of the action takes place (a valley in the heart of Europe), Maria Enders’s name also reveals the state of being at the junction between two cultures, the Mediterranean and the Teutonic. She finds herself at a halfway point, caught between the memories of a past, personal and generational, and a future with uncertain boundaries, represented by a world where reality is attested to by the approval of the online world rather than actual evidence. Probably no actress could better portray the duality of Maria Enders than Juliette Binoche, because she is the most willing to tread unknown territory. Sils Maria is a film that seeks to describe the void that obsesses every actor, when they are not yet acting, a film about what comes before and after the film.
The conversation with Juliette Binoche in the Spazio Cinema (Forum) will deal with the meaning of acting, the actor’s constant quest which is translated into characters able to entrench themselves in the audi-ence’s minds, the relationship between the evolution of a process and the evolution of an art that seeks to reflect the world. A unique occasion to meet an actress who is one of the most celebrated, but also one of the most aware of her role.
Like a horseback cavalcade, though with a motorbike instead of horses: Tony Gatlif’s rereading of Romeo and Juliet opens with movement. The tragedy’s words are replaced by running, dancing, leaping. The protago-nists of Geronimo are acrobats as much as actors, the children of a culture that has grown amidst graffiti and concrete. Gatlif positions his Geronimo, a coura-geous young women with a vision as clear as the summer sky, between the two factions like an elderly tribal chief.

Piazza Grande, Land Ho!, 15 | 8 | 2014 – 23.30

Five questions to Juliette Binoche · Excellence Award Moët & Chandon
Juliette Binocheand the art of finding the right balance
At Locarno you will receive a career achieve-ment award, which offers a good opportuni-ty to look at your trajectory as an actress. Do you see any particular points of departure in relation to that journey?
Probably the need of surviving, of expressing feelings, but also the need to contribute…Contributing by drawing on your experience, your sensibility, your dreams... You rise to a work, but the particularity of film is that it is a collective work, and that’s where it gets challenging, since you have to find a balance between the outside world while remaining rooted in yourself. It is this movement from the internal to the external, which is central to any artistic form, and most particularly in film. It’s what makes it difficult but at the same time so attractive, because while you depend on others, and specially the director, yet at the same time independence remains essential. It’s this balan-cing act that keeps me passionate.
Sils Maria, which you are presenting with Olivier Assayas, is a film that deals with several topics. You play an actress who is caught up in her past …
Maria Enders is clinging on to her past, to past feelings. She has identified herself with a role, and her success has imprisoned her in that
image. When, twenty years later, she has to play the character of the older woman, who has been dropped by her young partner, she has to face her fear of being abandoned. To live freely, Maria is going to have to accept, with humility, that she cannot change anything, via the con-frontation with the young actress at the end of the film. Maria has to decide to confront a new part of herself, in her art and in her life.
At Locarno we will also be showing two other films from your very rich filmography. Trois couleurs: Blue is a totally unique as a film. A film that rests upon the proximity of your character to the camera.
There are relationships between an actor and a director on films, that are naturally intimate, there’s no schtick, nothing needs to be said, just a presence is revealed in a particular silence. I believe that this intimacy is a special link with silence. With Trois couleurs: Blue, we had a very smooth and yet intense experience, we shot quickly, the camera and the lighting matched the story. The editing, which was Krzysztof’s real passion, reached perfection in Trois couleurs: Blue, the rhythm is genuine, breaths with the acting, it is discreet and shape the emotions. Concluding certain shots and scenes in black manages to get to the depths of what the characters are going through.
In Copie conforme, in addition to the world of Abbas Kiarostami, who plays on what is real and what is fictional, there is the Tuscan light, the warm colors of the buildings and the stonework. I wondered know how an actor physically inscribes him or herself into a context that, from necessity, changes.
Lucignano is a medieval village enclosed by walls, rather like a studio. Shooting in a single location, a real, living place, enables the story to be concentrated, but also brings it to life. Strolling round the village allowed me to revisit the film… The world a film creates is achieved by a gradual process, it is created through trust, sensibility and care, an alchemy of love, also we were privileged to be able to shoot chronologi-cally and it makes a huge difference.
This is your first time at Locarno; do you have any particular expectations?
I’ve often heard Locarno talked about as a place where auteur films can emerge, as if it was a new event, even if it is a festival that has been going for a very long time, it is somewhere that the films selected are cinema films above all. That’s all I can say.

Piazza Grande, Sils Maria, 15 | 8 | 2014 – 21.30

The British director (but with Indian origins) Gurinder Chadha brought women’s foot-ball to Piazza Grande with her Bend It Like Beckham: to her, Locarno still represents the surprise of seeing a flood of people along the streets of the Festival and discovering that everybody is there to watch her movie.
This is just one of the several memories that many other cinema personalities cher-ish in their hearts. Like Bruno Ganz who recalls rainy screenings in Piazza Grande under an umbrella. Or the two directors of Microcosmos: Le peuple de l’herbe, Ma-rie Pérennou and Claude Nuridsany, talk about how their tiny actor-insects turned into giants on the enormous screen. Director Alessandro D’Alatri remembers the fear of realizing that soon thousands of people will be watching and judging your film out in the open air. For Anna Galiena, the often vocifer-ous public brings with it the joyous spirit of her childhood film-watching.
Everyone has their own Piazza Grande memories, and every evening they’ll be served up as an appetizer. Before Carlo Cha-trian takes to the stage to announce the start of the programmed films, a pair of black and yellow chairs will appear on the screen, the same as the ones filling the Piazza. Only this time they will be placed elsewhere, among the stalls of a market in Zurich, surrounded by the green French countryside or on the cobblestones of an old Roman street.
The chairs will be located in the home-towns of actors or directors who over the course of various Festivals have seen their film win the Prix du Public UBS. This idea of a return, condensed into a minute and a half of memories, greetings and thanks, will be a celebration of the anniversary of one of the Festival del film Locarno’s mainstays. For 20 years now, the audience sitting in the Piazza has become the world’s largest open-air jury, casting their votes for the film they enjoyed the most.
Whether Smoke by Wayne Wang, Das Leben der Anderen by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck or The Human Resources Manager by Eran Riklis, a look at the long list of the winners shows how it represents not only the most recent history of the Festi-val del film Locarno, but also a good slice of the history of contemporary cinema. These little capsule films that will open all the evenings in the Piazza Grande are our way of refreshing that history, a way of renewing tradition but also of launching visions of the present and the future through a dive into the past. And a reminder that once again it will be you in the Piazza who choose who will sit next year on those leopard-adorned seats, scattered around the world.

coppia in vacanza.

Beyond the Festival

Cinema is magic, but also magic needs years of study and training. And we are not only talking about directors and actors: cin-ema mainly needs good images, and those can be given as well by photographers, graphic artists, fashion and visual design-ers. If you’re looking for a school where you can learn all these disciplines in an innova-tive and multimedia environment, the F+F Schule für Kunst und Design in Zurich is the right place for you.
It is enough to take a look at the program overview to understand why this academy can represent a turning point in the life of future movie professionals: starting in mid August, the five curricula are 3 years long and permit to obtain a professional college degree. The six-semester Film programme, in particular, offers students an opportu-nity to acquire professional skills that put them in a position to work successfully in the area of non-fiction movies, as well as in
the documentary genre and essay film field. For people who want to spend a few days
experimenting the quality of this profes-sional educational venue for art and design founded in 1971, every year the F+F offers some Summer-Workshops: short periods of intense artistic exploration under the direc-tion of international working artists and de-signers.
