Completion of Infrastructure

Very good progress last few weeks:– South wall complete– North Wall, 75% plates fitted– Quench reaction block being cast today– False floor in progress off-site– Believable completion date of 12th December– Negotiated our way out of fireproof painting - good

Target & solenoidsTarget:

– Decided we can re-design shafts and bearings– Get to a new starting point with ISIS– Be ready Easter time next year– Engineering help (Jason Tarrant) for Sheffield

Decay solenoid:– No changes from last meeting– But worst case might be to remove complete solenoid

• Remove North wall• Build shield on inside of synchrotron so work in Hall unaffected• Do at Christmas• Likely cost £25-30K

Spectrometer solenoid:– Priority shifted to magnet#2– Field map as originally planned– We get it late Jan ‘09

Phase Two planning

We just had the Collaboration Meeting– Reviews of major Phase two subsystems included– Much useful information and milestones emerged– But a lot still to do– No excuses now not to make the project plan!– LH2 project is struggling badly though

• It’s still competing for effort with Decay solenoid and focus coils – engineering effort MUST be reinforced quickly

– Focus coil final design review at Oxford 3rd November– RFCC modules in good shape – cavities ready for

manufacture– Coupling coil review early December

Non-MICE costs

2 MVA electrical upgrade will be required by Step Five– Various ways to do it, have budget prices between

£200 & £600K– Two year lead time, which I can well believe– Need to worry about it now– RAL’s line on the WFL:

• ‘it was a CCLRC-specific fund and there’s no STFC equivalent.’

• Discussed with Sean Stewart and Paul Hartley – predictable outcome!

• Requested to put it on the Capital Investment plan• Watch this space…..

Tony has provided cost centre for railings and door stuff– Does that mean I can use it?

Staffing, visitors & admin

Transition to Phase Two has been a bit of a shambles– My fault for not being clear about cost centres– Have agreement with Finance that I will adjust staff

bookings at end of each month myself– All UK project members being circulated with correct

Phase two cost code for capital items

•Need some clarification of visa & work permits for US types

•Admin Officer, Rose Hayes starts 29th October• We need to agree her terms of reference/job

description, does Susan do this?

•MICE has had its first lost-time accident – we’re now on the HSE’s radar
