Solenoid BrakesBCH AC Solenoid operated brakes type'S' are designed for long life, easy installation andminimum maintenance. They are electrically released and spring applied providing 'Fail-safe'operation. The retarding torque developed is directly proportional to the spring pressure.

The brake wheel is of relatively large size in relation tothe torque developed by the brake. This permits use ofa large brake shoe lining and lower shoe pressure. Lowshoe pressure, equally distributed over a large liningarea, results in even wear of the friction surfaces andeven braking torque. The over-size wheel typeconstruction also permits use of a smaller operatingsolenoid that requires less current for a given torquerating.Low shoe pressure reduces the stress on all pins andpivot points to extend mechanical life and reducemaintenance costs. There is no unbalance of forces tocause side thrust during braking, because shoe typebrake does not depend upon a wrapping action of thelining around the wheel.ApplicationsTypical applications include conveyors, hoisting, equipment, machine tools, printing presses, smallcranes, over head doors, vacuum moulding machinesetc.Constructional featuresSpecial constructional features such as those listedbelow account for exceptionally long mechanical life ofthe brakes.(i) Neoprene shock absorber-prevents link pinbreakage and increases the life ofthe solenoid.(ii) Hardened steel lever and spring gland-thehardened steel construction of the lever andspring gland reduces wear at the pins and allother points of contact.(iii) Cast iron wheel- The physical properties of theiron minimise the tendency of the wheel todeposit metal particles in the lining which couldresult in serious scoring of the wheel.

AdjustmentsAdjustments for torque and lining wear are convenientlyand quickly made. Braking torque and lining wearadjustments are made at the top of the brake. A setscrew and locking nut located on the top of the solenoidframe provide adjustment for equalising clearancebetween the brake shoes to prevent dragging when thebrake is released.

Coil duty classificationShunt brake coils are rated either for intermittent (1hour) duty, or continuous duty. Intermittent dutyindicates that the coil can be placed across the line forone hour without excessive heating. This is equivalentto 1/2 time duty or one minute on and one minute off.Coils rated for continuous duty can be connectedacross the line continuously without exceedingtemperature limits.

The class of insulation of coils is class F.

MountingType'S' brakes are designed and recommended for useand mounting only in the floor position. Side or verticalmountings are not recommended because the solenoidloading is altered resulting in acelerated and prematurecoil failure.

Brake selectionThe method most generally used to determine therequired braking torque isto calculate the full load motortoque by means of the following formula:T = 9552xkW

    n =

nFull load motor torque in Newton Metre (Nm)Motor out put in kilowattsRated speed of the motor shaft on whichbrake wheel is mounted in revolution perminute (r.p.m.)

(iv) Spring pins-The tight gripping spring pins T =insure against the loss of pins due to shock. kW =(v) Inexpensive lining replacement-Liningsattached to shoes by removable flat headgroove-pins.(vi) Fewer joints-The shoe is actually a part of theshoe lever and not separate from it. This makesfor fewer mechanical joints and keeps wearpoints at a minimum.(vii) Solenoid-The solenoid coil can be removedwithout disturbing the brake adjustment.Solenoid loading isdesigned to reduce wear.

The torque rating of brake selected should be at leastequal to the full load motor torque for the dutyconsidered. In some applications where the brake must stop or holdabnormal loads on the driving equipment, the brakingtorque must be determined using the extreme operatingconditions. In these cases, the braking torque isdetermined by calculating the maximum load and

translating it into torque at the shaft on which the brakeis mounted.Because ofthe large lining area, the capacity of Type '5'brakes is generally considered ample for averageapplication. However when brakes are to be used forfrequent stopping or for stopping heavy inertial loadsrequiring long periods of deceleration.Complete details, including w'i, speed of load referredto brake shaft and frequency of stops should be referredto the factory for analysis.

AC SolenoidsThe remarkable efficiency of BhartiaIndustries Limited's AC Solenoids (PullType) encourages application to a widerange of purposes requiringa definite pullmotion under automatic or distant controlin connection with electrically drivenmachinery.Typical functions include the operation ofelectromechanical brakes and valves, various short-stroke motions on machinetools and many operations required inautomaticmachineryof all kinds.

SpecificationsThe solenoid consists of laminated frame andplunger with steel supporting frame. The epoxymoulded coil is held in place by means of flat steelsprings to prevent transmission of shock to thecoil. The plunger and frame are carefully machinedto ensure quiet operations. Solenoids can be usedfor up to 600 operations per hour if the pull-in timeis within specified limits. These solenoids areprovided with fixing holes for floor mounting.
