1 Kings 11 1 But king Solomon loved many strange (foreign) women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians, and Hittites; 2 Of the nations concerning which the LORD said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you: for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Solomon clave unto these in love.

Willful disobedience!Willful disobedience!

God said don’t; Solomon did.

3 And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines: and his wives turned away his heart. 4 For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect (not completely) with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father.

1000 womenWorshippers of false gods

He clave (was joined) unto them in love.

God said they would, and they did.

4b and his heart was not perfect (not completely) with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father.

We know that David sinned, but he repented.

Anything that brought distance between David and The Lord God broke David’s heart.

His heart was completely toward The True and Living God.

David never worshipped any other god.

God warned the Israelites not to take foreign women to be their wives, and told what

would happen:Their hearts would be turned away from God.

Solomon’s wives turned his heart away from God.

So, could Solomon blame them for his troubles?

No! he chose to disobey God.

He chose to chase pagan women.

Page 6: 1 kings 11a

6

Never blame someone else for your troubles.

We each and all do what we choose to do.

Maybe some one talked you into it; it’s still your choice.

Accept responsibility for your own actions, and if you do wrong or fail to do right,

Repent!

5 For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites. 6 And Solomon did evil in the sight of the LORD, and went not fully after the LORD, as did David his father.

Solomon did evil in God’s eyes.

Solomon was of two minds; he followed after God Almighty, but not with his whole heart.

Page 8: 1 kings 11a

James 1 8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

Be single-minded.

Follow after The Lord God with your whole

heart.Look not to the

left or the right.

Solomon loved the Lord God, but he also loved

exotic women.

DownfallAlso loved are the words of

We must love God and God alone.

7 Then did Solomon build an high place for Chemosh, the abomination of Moab, in the hill that is before Jerusalem, and for Molech, the abomi-nation of the children of Ammon. 8 And likewise did he for all his strange wives, which burnt incense and sacrificed unto their gods.

Whatever these women wanted, he provided.

People develop close relationships with pagans, thinking that they will lead them aright.

It almost never happens that way.

9 And the LORD was angry with Solomon, because his heart was turned from the LORD God of Israel, which had appeared unto him twice, 10 And had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods: but he kept not that which the LORD commanded.

Solomon was very strong-willed and stubborn and disobedient to the Lord.

God became angry with him.Not with the wives, but Solomon.

Deuteronomy 17 (TLB) 14 "When you arrive in the land the Lord your God will give you, and have conquered it, and begin to think, ‘We ought to have a king like the other nations around us’--

When God’s people begin to look around and want to be like other people, that is the

beginning of their slide into sin.

Did Solomon know better?

God tells us to be separate from the world; be different. 2 Cor 6:17

15 be sure that you select as king the man the Lord your God shall choose. He must be an Israelite, not a foreigner. 16 Be sure that he doesn’t build up a large stable of horses for himself, nor send his men to Egypt to raise horses for him there, for the Lord has told you, ‘Never return to Egypt again.’ 17 He must not have too many wives, lest his heart be turned away from the Lord, neither shall he be excessively rich.

Too many wives = more than one.Excessively rich = more than needed.

18 "And when he has been crowned and sits upon his throne as king, then he must copy these laws from the book kept by the Levite-priests. 19 That copy of the laws shall be his constant companion. He must read from it every day of his life so that he will learn to respect the Lord his God by obeying all of His Commands.

Not have it done

Page 16: 1 kings 11a

16

20 This regular reading of God’s laws will prevent him from feeling that he is better than his fellow citizens. It will also prevent him from turning away from God’s laws in the slightest respect and will ensure his having a long, good reign. His sons will then follow him upon the throne.

Solomon disobeyed all of these rules.God gave him Wisdom, and he misused it.

Self-aggrandizement

(Text) 11 Wherefore the LORD said unto Solomon, Forasmuch as this is done of thee, and thou hast not kept My covenant and My statutes, which I have commanded thee, I will surely rend (tear) the kingdom from thee, and will give it to thy servant.

You might say, “But God promised.”

We cannot claim the Promises of God when we refuse to obey all of His Word.

Page 18: 1 kings 11a

18

Proverbs 30 5 Every Word of God is pure: He is a shield unto them that put their trust in Him.

We put our trust in God by doing what He says.

Trust and obey can’t be separated!

To trust is to obey.

Luke 4 4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by Every Word of God.

There is the key to receiving the blessings of God:

Live by every Word of God.Never live by your own thoughts and ideas.

Our understanding is foolishness with God.
