Mission Statement
The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) is an autonomous campus within TheUniversity of Alabama System dedicated to excellence in teaching, research, andservice. UAH is a key participant in one of the nation’s major international centersfor advanced technological research and utilizes its position in this environment toprovide unique opportunities and creative programs for students, faculty, and thecommunity. UAH is committed to maintaining a diverse academic community of thehighest quality, and to providing an environment that facilitates intellectual, cultural,personal, and professional growth. UAH fosters leadership, creative and criticalthinking, clear communication, a respect for knowledge and the pursuit of truth, andan engagement in the challenge and pleasure of a lifetime of learning. A Brief History
ORGANIZATION
In 1950, The University of Alabama in Huntsville initiated its academic program as anextension center of The University of Alabama.
In September 1966, the Huntsville Campus became The University of Alabama in Hunts-ville, an official branch of The University of Alabama.
In 1969, The University of Alabama System was reorganized to provide for the three au-tonomous campuses, each with a president.
INSTRUCTION AND DEGREES
In 1963, the Huntsville Campus initiated programs leading to graduate degrees to beawarded in Huntsville. In 1964, the first graduate degree was awarded in Huntsville.
In 1964, the Huntsville Campus initiated degree programs leading to the bachelor’s degreeto be awarded in Huntsville.
In 1968, the first bachelor degrees earned at UAH were awarded in Tuscaloosa. Degreeswere awarded in Huntsville the following year.
In 1971, doctoral programs were initiated at UAH.
STUDENTS
In 1964, the first full-time freshman class was enrolled at the Huntsville campus.
RESEARCH
In June 1961, Dr. Wernher von Braun addressed the Alabama legislature and asked forfunding of a research institute on the Huntsville campus. The Research Institute Buildingwas occupied in July 1964.
ACCREDITATION
The University of Alabama in Huntsville is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of theSouthern Association of Colleges and Schools to award bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoraldegrees.
