A fatal accident claimed the life of Franco Van Eck the past week on the Dwarsriver pass. Franco who became a father for the first time three months ago, was on his way down the pass towards the mine when he collided with the side of an ore carrier. Apparently the ore carrier overtook another truck in the pass on their way to Lydenburg. This is not an isolated incident. Let’s stand together as a communityPass and the Watervalsrivier Pass drive recklessly. They don't care about oncoming traffic. It's like they own the road and everybody has to make way for them. Some people working on the mines have adopted the same way of thinking and everybody knows what state the roads in and around Lydenburg are in but they just keep on speeding and overtaking. We, at the Highlands Panorama News, hear all the horror stories about road users and how they drive in and around our town. There seems to be only one solution. Three quarters of

the time these roads are being used by families or mine workers who drive in lift clubs. Why don't you the public, ask the person sitting next to you in the car to take a photo of perpetrators in action and send the photo with the date, time, place and what took place to us and we'll print it in the newspaper - perhaps a “name them and shame them” campaign for all to see would make people start to think twice. Laastens wil ek my man, Hennie en seuntjie Craigen bedank dat hulle ons die geleentheid gegun het om te gaan,” het sy gesê.Hulle bedank graag die borge wat Megan se deelname moontlik gemaak het om Los Angeles toe te gaan. By die SA Kampioenskappe het Megan goud, silwer en brons gewen. Haar goue medalje het haar laat kwalifiseer vir die Suid Afrikaanse span waar sy haar Springbok kleure ontvang het.

DIE Panorama Mall, Lydenburg, wat met ’n vorige publikasie in die Highlands Panorama Nuus bekendgestel is, is met positiewe en negatiewe reaksie ontvang. Positief in die sin dat daar werkskepping aan die kom is en dat mense nie meer Nelspruit toe hoef te ry en swaarverdiende geld van ons kontrei na ’n ander kontrei vloei nie. Die negatief was in oorgrootte meerderheid, want die publiek se moed is al in hul skoene oor die dienslewering. Panorama Mall bring egter net positiewe eienskappe. Onder meer verskaf hulle werk aan die werkloses, die rioolstelsel (soos op foto aangedui) is nie afhanklik van die dorp nie en besit sy eie suiweringstelsel sodat die water weer vir die tuine kan gaan, die water kom ook van ’n ondergrondse fontein en ’n reservoir word daarvoor gebou en die beste van alles is dat sodra die krag aangesit word vir die Panorama Mall, baat die dorp met ekstra kva vanaf die kragstasie, m.a.w. geen krag word weggeneem uit die dorp vir die mall nie. Dit het wel ook intussen aan die lig gekom dat die privaat hospitaal wat vir Lydenburg beplan is vir eers van die baan is. Redes hiervoor het met ons ter perse gaan nog nie aan die lig gekom nie. Wanpersepsies oor die Panorama Mall, Lydenburg

AfriForum het die Departement van Omgewingsake (DO) gevra om op te tree met betrekking tot die Lydenburg-stortingsterrein, nadat die Munisipaliteit die terrein wanbestuur het.Volgens Leon de Jager, voorsitter van die Lydenburg-tak van AfriForum, is die munisipaliteit se nalatigheid onaanvaarbaar.“Plaaslike munisipaliteite is verantwoordelik om seker te maak dat afvalbestuursdienste aan die gemeenskappe gebied word wat hulle bedien. Ons betaal belasting vir hierdie noodsaaklike dienste, maar wat word van ons geld?”AfriForum het die munisipaliteit gewaarsku dat daar opgetree sal word indien die situasie nie reggestel word nie. “Die munisipaliteit het nie gereageer nie en dit is duidelik dat hulle nie hulle plig gaan nakom nie. Daarom het ons Omgewingsake genader om in te gryp,” het De Jager gesê.“Die Wet op Nasionale Omgewingsbestuur: Afvalbestuur bepaal duidelik dat hierdie

OLD GRUMPYAfrican Spring

THE season of Spring denotes new life, a new beginning. What is happening in North Africa should be a lesson to all politicians and civil servants. The world is an open place today. Everyone knows what is going on everywhere. The old system of communist democracy, tribalism and chief rule is over.The ANC, who were schooled in communist countries

regards its form of government a democracy. Just like Mugabe. Give everyone the vote, but intimidate, bribe or threaten them to vote for you. If that does not work, just tamper with the election process or the results.Well, that does not cut it anymore. The African Spring shows that people are gatvol. They revolt openly, depose despots and incarcerate or kill civil servants. Thousands of innocents civilians are also killed by criminal governments.T h i n g i s , t h e s e s o c a l l e d “democratic”criminal governments cannot hide anymore. Nor can they run,

as other governments that will afford them protection are also being chased off.The way this government and its cadre deployed civil servants are pillaging and raping South Africa, will end soon. Ordinary, poor and sometimes illiterate people are not stupid. They talk, observe and listen. They are becoming bold. They are calling the revolts in Africa the new Spring. Politicians and government officials who are too stubborn or too stupid to see and understand this, will be taken out by a natural process called evolution. In this case not the so called strongest will come out on top. The sheer number of the masses will defeat them. We do not need to threaten them. Their own people are already taking them out. The African Spring will swell until we achieve normality and balance. Be warned!

In kampdagboeke skryf vroue oor hul kamplewe. Enkele uitsonderinge was dinamiese vroue soos Marie Koopmans de Wet en ML Rompel-Koopman. Die vrou is egter primêr gesien as gesinsmoeder, opvoeder en volkshoeder, in diens van volk en vaderland. Die eerste feministiese boek: Vrou en feminist –deur Marie du Toit (dogter van SJ du Toit en suster van Totius) het in 1921 verskyn en MER het vroeg in die 20ste eeu feministiese idees geopper. Dr Petronella van Heerden (1887–1975) was die eerste vrou wat medies gestudeer het (in Amsterdam). Sy was 'n eksentrieke figuur wat mansklere gedra en 'n histerektomie ondergaan het om ontslae te raak van haar vrouedele (sien in Etienne van Heerden se Kikoejoe die karakter Geertruida Sophia Latsky, wat op dr Van Heerden gegrond is). Prof Lydia van Niekerk was 'n briljante student wat in 1920 as die eerste vroulike professor – en wel in Afrikaans en Nederlands – aan die Universiteit van Stellenbosch aangestel is. Sy was 'n kenner van die skilderkuns en het gereeld stukke oor poësie, drama en prosa in Die Huisgenoot geskryf. Met die Taalkonferensie van 1911 was dit vrouestudente wat besluit het dat die brabbeltaal van Engels/Nederlands/Afrikaans wat die vrouestudente op Stellenbosch praat, voortaan vervang moet word met suiwer Afrikaans. Bekende studente soos Anna Neethling-Pohl in die twintigerjare, Ina Rousseau en Berta Smit in die veertigerjare, Rykie van Reenen en Elize Lindes (Botha) sou 'n baie belangrike rol speel.Tydskrifte soos Die Boerevrou (1919) en later Rooi Rose en Sarie Marais het baie daartoe bygedra om vroue "mondig" te maak, asook skrywers en joernaliste soos die invloedryke MER (Maria Elizabeth Rothmann) en Audrey Blignault (laasgenoemde het onder andere baie gedoen om 'n leeskultuur te vestig deur die oprigting van leeskringe aan te moedig), Alba Bouwer, Elise Muller en Rykie van Reenen, asook dinamiese vroue-kritici soos Elizabeth Conradie, Anita Lindenberg en Elize Botha. Elisabeth Eybers is die eerste groot Afrikaanse vrouedigter, maar ook een van die groot digters in Afrikaans, terwyl Ingrid Jonker se werk bykans ikoonstatus verwerf het. Vroue het in opstand gekom teen die destydse realiteit dat dubbel gediskrimineer is teen hulle. Dit het tot uiting gekom in onder andere werksaamhede van die Black Sash-beweging en in die optog van swart vroue na die Uniegebou in 1956 uit protes teen die paswette. Baie skrywers en navorsers oor Vroue sal sê dat vroue steeds gedefinieer word deur mans, en manlike geskiedskrywers het dikwels feite aangepas by hulle eie agendas. So beweer die geskiedskrywer Rosalind Miles byvoorbeeld dat Jean D'Arc nie verbrand is oor geloofsafvalligheid nie, maar omdat sy mansklere gedra het. Florence Nightingale was eintlik bekend as “the Lady with the Hammer”, omdat sy in woede 'n gesluite deur van 'n stoorkamer getakel het toe die bevelvoerder nie voorrade aan haar wou gee nie. Die oorlogskorrespondent van die Times het dit egter te kru gevind vir die Britse lesers by die huis.

Onselfsugtigheid teen wil en dank is dikwels vroue se lot. Bekende digter Totius het oor vroue se opoffering gedig:

Dit put maar en sy gee maar immerdit put maar en sy weier nimmer,

net soos 'n moeder, so opreg,gee sy haar laaste druppel weg!”

Vroue hou die toekoms van 'n nasie in hul boesem, en daarvoor kan almal respek toon.

Vroue se lot en dit wat hulle bereik het staan kiertsregop in ons bewussyn hierdie maand. Dis 'n emosionele saak. Hier en daar kan vroue en dogters vandag name noem wat bekendheid verwerf het. Maar op die vooraand van Nasionale Vrouedag moet ons daardie name weer in aanskou neem. Daarom is 'Hoorhierso' hierdie week dalk meer formeel. Maar Die Uwe het uit verskeie bronne op die internet 'n rubriek saamgestel as geskiedkundige-lepel waarvan almal 'n happie kan vat.In die Bybel kan mens vroue soos Rut en Naomi, Hanna, Ester, Debora, Rispa en Abigajil uitsonder. Abigajil was die vrou van Nabal, 'n baie ryk man. Volgens die Bybel was hy 'n regte korrelkop en onbeskof, maar sy vrou het 'n goeie verstand gehad en sy was mooi... Deur die eeue het vroue groot rolle in verskeie lande gespeel. Swede was die eerste land wat vanaf 1718 tot 1771 (toe dit teruggetrek is) stemreg toegestaan het aan vroulike belastingbetalers. Ook in die 18de eeu het Corsica, Massachusetts en New Jersey dit vir kort periodes toegelaat. In die laat 19de eeu het sommige provinsies in Australië, enkele Amerikaanse state, en ook Swede, Brittanje, Kanada en kleiner eilande beperkte stemreg verleen. Nieu-Seeland (1893) en Suid-Australië (1894) was voorlopers met omvattende stemreg. Finland (1906) was die eerste land waar vroue kon stem én in verkiesings kon staan, ongeag ras, besittings of sosiale klas. Na 1910 het onder meer Denemarke, Noorweë, Kanada, Duitsland, Pole en Rusland gevolg. België, Hongarye en Nederland het in 1919 vrouestemreg toegestaan; in die twintigerjare die VSA en Swede. Brittanje het in 1928 gelyke stemreg met mans toegelaat en Suid-Afrika in 1930 (vir wit vroue; die ander eers in 1994); in die dertigerjare Spanje en Portugal, Brasilië, Thailand, Turkye en Indië; in die veertigerjare Frankryk en Italië; Griekeland in 1952, Egipte en Somalië (1956); Switserland eers in 1971 op federalevlak. en godweet, ook nie poësie nie.In die Eerste Afrikaanse Taalbeweging het Di Patriot nie vroueskryfwerk verwelkom nie. Eers 'n jaar later, na die ontstaan van Ons Klyntji, is daar na vrouelesers van die blad verwys. Die groot rol wat vroue in die Anglo-Boereoorlog gespeel het, het wel erkenning ontvang.

Koekversiering is al vir jare vir Louise ’n passie. Sy en Mynie maak enige koek wat die kliënt begeer. Veral die koeke vir kinderpartytjies is iets wat mense se asems sal laat wegslaan. Dis voorwaar soeter as soet suikerkuns.

En ek dink dis hoekom koerante as werksmedium my al op 10 jarige ouderdom gefassineer het. Daar is geen ander medium wat die gevoelens van 'n gemeenskap so kan opsom nie. Die sosiale media soos facebook, instagram en twitter probeer....... maar is selde ’n betroubare bron.By die Highlands Panorama Nuus sit ons ook ons foute op die voorblad, maar iewers doen ons ook iets reg. Die koerant is 'n medium om mense te help en partykeer op hul foute te wys. Wat die dorpskoerant uniek maak is dat ons 'Jou Taal Praat'. Koerante soos ons is daar vir die man op die straat om te sien waar hy wat wil gaan koop, watter motorhandelaar in die dorp het iets nuuts op die vloer en waar hy sy verf gaan kry hierdie week. Dis natuurlike algemene kennis dat die koerant jou die week se nuus bied, wat waar en wanneer en hoe... van elke aspek van die gemeenskap. Newspapers will never become obsolete, as there will always be a class difference in the world and a part of the population that does not have access to the internet. Die bekende Fransman Napoleon Bonaparte het al in 1780 gesê: “Four hostile newspapers are more to be feared than a thousand bayonets..” - Napoleon BonaparteEk glo in 'n dorp soos Lydenburg kan die huidige koerante 'n groot verskril maak in die groei van die dorp. En dan hoef niemand vir Napoleon: se duisend bayonette bang te wees nie. En dis hoekom 'n bemarkingstrategie, nuusberigte en skakelwerk in die media volgens my altyd uit die volgende uitgangspunt geskryf moet word: Nuus is nie: Hond by man nie. Maar man byt hond.

Mr A. Moir from Lydenburg writes:With reference to John Theunissne's article regarding the Centenary of St Peter's church in Sabie this, year. I would like to add a little of the history of St John's Anglican church in Lydenburg. My late friend Tony Goudvis research and documented the history of St John's with the first edition published in 2006. I have taken the liberty of quoting from his research. Congratulations to the St Peter's Anglican Church on its Centenary. In the article it is said that St Peter's is the second oldest Anglican Church in the parish. The oldest church is St Mary's in Pilgrim's Rest - 1884. “The gold field of Pilgrims Rest, 35 miles away, had just been discovered and by 1874 Lydenburg had become a far busier village because an endless stream of digger from the Kimberly diamond fields and the rest of SA had to pass through on their way to Pilgrims Rest. The track from Lydenburg to Pilgrims Rest took two days of torture and by ox wagon; it would cost the travelers £1:10, except for the more hazardous journey to Lourenco Marques to Pilgrims Rest through the malaria and sleeping sickness country. Lydenburg had become the provisional centre for the Gold Fields. It was against this background the Thos. Edward Wilkinson Bishop of Zululand arrived in Lydenburg. The day after he arrived he baptized the children of George Byerley and Stafford Parker. The latter had been the former

president of the Diamond Diggers Republic and had settled in Lydenburg. Clearly, the Bishop had decided or persuaded that Lydenburg required a church and that the assembly at the baptism would be a nucleus for the congregation. There was no Bishop in Pretoria, a town that had only been established 14 years earlier, so it is interesting to know that the Church in Lydenburg was established from Natal. Bishop Wilkinson arranged for Rev. John Thorn to come to Lydenburg to take charge of the new congregation and a church was then built. It consisted of mud bricks under a thatched roof, as were many of the original building in Lydenburg at this time. There are other, older Anglican Church buildings, but St. John's is one of the oldest churches that has continued to hold services on a regular basis.”Actually St John's Lydenburg is the oldest church having been built in 1874.

Rushing out to the shops three or four times over a weekend also impacts your pocket. Draw up a shopping list and ensure you complete all your errands in one trip. NISSAN has expanded its local Juke model line-up with the addition of a frugal, front-wheel-drive turbodiesel.

The Nissan Juke 1,5 dCi Acenta+ develops 81 kW and 260 N.m of torque, the latter being modulated under the Nissan Dynamic drive system, Normal, Sport) that caps the torque to 220 N.m in its most frugal (ECO) setting and modulates throttle input in both ECO and Sport settings. Drive is sent to the front wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox.

Fuel efficiency is the order of the day here, with such features as low-stfriction engine components, start/stop and revised gear ratios (lower 1

nd rd thand 2 for off-the-mark performance and higher 3 to 6 ratios for improved fuel efficiency) contributing to claimed fuel consumption and CO2

emissions figures of 4,2 litres/100 km and 109 g/km, respectively. This unit requires 50 ppm, low-sulphur diesel.

Andre Martinaglia: 'The first volunteers of the Italian Legion during the Anglo-Boer War were , Camillo Ricchiardi, Guglielmo Martinaglia, who had discovered the Sterkfontein Caves, near Krugersdorp in 1896, the two Buglio brothers and Antoniazzi, from Varese. The first four mentioned were again from Piedmont Region of Italy. After the ''Siege of Ladysmith'' was broken the retreat of the Boer forces started, the Italians playing their role in all of this to the full.Reaching Carolina, the Italian Legion was met by their fellow countrymen who were railway workers there. They were greated by the Italians singing loudly their corps anthem , which was a combination of the ''Italian Royal March'' (Royal March of Garibaldi) and the French ''La Marseillaise''. The wording of the song, adapted by a poetically inclined volunteer, was however not very complimentary to the enemy. The Italian Legion was well known to the Boers. Arriving at Machadadorp they were warmly greeted by Dr. Roberto Viletti and his family as well as the Italian family Gallo, spending a few days in welcomed company. Also awaiting them were another 30 plus Italian volunteers, who had arrived from Argentina. To-day even though the language of that country is Spanish, 73,4% of the population are from Italian descent. On the 16th of June, 1900 a clash with the enemy occurred. One hundred and fifty British officers, and 2,200 men participated, but still the enemy were able to

advance and breach their lines of defence, as a result of their capable artillery cannon fire. Thereafter General Viljoen ordered the Italian Legion to escort one of the captured British ''Long Tom '' cannons, which was to be pulled by 30 oxen, and aided by 30 Boer gunners. All was placed under Ricchiardi's command, and soon a problem arose regarding a ''onder-Veldkornet'', who refused along with his men to take orders and instructions from him, which caused a half-day delay. Later a detachment of 200 hundred British Lancers came within a couple of hundred meters from the cannon - fortunately the Italian Legions rear guard, managed to keep them at bay, after a strenuous struggle, by using a machine gun. On arrival at Witbank, General Ben Viljoen rebuked the Italians, blaming them for the delay. When at Middelburg they heard of this unjustifiable criticism that was launched about their conduct, 300 of Ricchiardi's men downed their weapons and marched to see General Louis Botha in person. Botha apologized profusely and took them to the hotel where they were invited to eat a hearty meal, and soon fortunately all was forgotten. Naturally the English newspapers gave the event much publicity, calling the Italian volunteers ''mercernaries''. The beginning of August, 1900 the Italian Legion reached Dalmanuthua, a station on the Delagoa Railway line, between Pretoria and Lourenco Marques(now Maputo). Here they were deployed in the centre with a ''Long Tom'' cannon. In a day the Italians entrenched this position, which was so well laid out, it earned genuine compliments from Colonel Trichard, and other foreign military observers that were present. The 28th of August the Italians thought their time had come, with the English bringing forward a naval gun, and establishing their position, and directed their fire towards the Long Tom cannon. They were surprised and confused by all this at first, scattering all over the place, and thereby creating a more dangerous condition for themselves. Ricchiardi himself managed to escape injury when a shell exploded a few meters from him, but slightly injuring his servant. Despite all of this, the cooks Corporal Sella and his assistant Tosi, had carried on regardless preparing their meals, as if nothing was happening. The enemy had fired from 1,200 meters away, and had failed to hit the Long Tom Cannon, because of the great distance involved. They were probably celebrating a great victory, thinking that they had silenced their artillery, but had in fact expended 302 shells at a cost of 10,000 English Pounds, and all to no avail.On the 29th August 1900, news was received that a force of 60,000 English troops were marching against them. The Long Tom cannon under the direction of General Louis Botha was placed into position, and then the Italian gunners starting firing. The Boer artillery officer wanted to limber the Long Tom up and retreat, refusing to fire any more shells. Seeing the desperate plight of the policemen, Ricchiardi forced him to fire another 20 shells at the enemy, thereby giving them a chance to survive and reach safety from 3,000 meters away.At Machadadorp, Dr Viletti and his family were quickly taken on board a train, with the English guns already ranging in on them. So the retreat continued to Komatiepoort where on the 22nd September 1900, President Paul Kruger already in Lourenco Marques ordered the Italian Legion to disband. Twenty of the volunteers however decided to remain, and became part of the ''Bittereinders''. Ricchiardi was arrested in Lourenco Marques by the Portugese authorities on his way to meet President Paul Kruger to try and persuade him to stand and continue fighting at Komatiepoort with its natural fortifications. He was released under oath never to return to South Africa again. Ricchiardi, later in Europe, awaiting the arrival of President Paul Kruger in France, married General Joubert's niece Myra Franzyska Guttman. (Contribution by the Mpumalanga Historical Interest )

COROMANDEL Primary School were crowned McDonalds Under 14 School champions for the Mpumalanga region. The school is just outside Lydenburg on the Dullstroom road. The tournament was held at the KaNyamazane Stadium in Mbombela/Nelspruit on Saturday afternoon.The team from the Bohlabela region beat Tikhontel Secondary School from the Ehlazeni region 2-0 in the final. They now book their place in the national finals, which will be held at the Sinaba Stadium in Daveyton on the weekend of 19-21 September. Coromandel beat Lindile Secondary School 1-0 to book their place in the final while Tikhontele defeated Kriel High School 2-1 in the second semi-final. Lindile crushed Kriel 3-0 in the third and fourth playoff game and walked away with the bronze medals on the day. Nkosi Thembeka, from the Department of Basic Education in the region, praised McDonalds, the coaches and the players involved in the event, adding that he hopes to continue the partnership for many more years to come.“I just want to thank McDonalds on behalf of the South African Schools Football Association for hosting such a magnificent event.“We are so grateful at the Department of Education for McDonalds, who have assisted us where we fall short. We are also so grateful for the players, the schools, the coaches and we hope to continue this partnership for many more years to come, ” said Thembaka.Coromandel coach Themba Shabangu said: “I feel very happy, I am so excited and don't know what to say. It means a lot to the players, the region and the school and it shows the people from the rural area that they can make it. The winning schools principal, Jacob Nawa, shared the thoughts of his colleague, adding that the tournament also serves a deeper purpose.“I came to this school last year at which time we only went as far as the provincial level, so I'm very happy that the boys have finally won the tournament,” said Nawa.This competitions motto: “Developing dreams” is not only about winning, but also about developing talent and taking children off the street. Nawa explained that the school is situated on a farm and that many of the children's parents are unemployed, which makes the feat even more extraordinary. “These kids are from a farm, their parents aren't working so it's difficult, but the kids have done it under those difficult circumstances,” he said.Coromandel skipper Glen Skhosana was named the

goalkeeper of the tournament for some outstanding acrobatic saves throughout the day, while his teammate Siboniso Makgata scooped up the player of the tournament award for a solid display in midfield.
