NEW RHINO DE-HORNING METHOD USED AT OHRIGSTAD DAM NATURE RESERVE The Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) during its operations on November 20, 2014 de-horned all the rhino at the Ohrigstad Dam Nature Reserve. This forms part of MTPA's ongoing effort to prevent and stop rhino poaching in the province. "De-horning is the sawing off of a large part of the rhino's horn. This is done while the rhino is under anaesthesia. If done correctly, no pain is felt by the rhino. So far no negative effect has been seen in rhino behaviour where the whole herd was dehorned", said Dr Ferreira du Plessis, Head Veterinarian at MTPA.

From page 1"Techniques of dehorning have changed since the 1980's with veterinarians gaining a better understanding of the rhino's anatomy. The new de-horning method used by MTPA is to saw off the horn at a safe level and then using a grinder to remove all the excess horn in a careful way to ensure that virtually all the horn is removed", explained du Plessis. MTPA will follow up this de-horning method every 6 months. Re-growth, if any, will be removed using the same method. "This method of dehorning is also being implemented on all other rhino populations in the reserves under the management of the MTPA" added du Plessis. THE SONA speech of the President was a complete and utter failure. Firstly cellphone signals were blocked. As in a police state. The public must not hear or see. Then there was no water available for thirsty people. Apparently parliamentary workers are on strike, because they were promised things in 2014 which never materialised. This is no different from the ANC’s promises to the people, which are seldom honoured.

Following this chaotic state of affairs, with the whole world and the nation looking on, Malema got up and asked a simple and legitimate question under a point of order. A question that was asked before and that required a simple answer.Despite the hoohah about rules, he was correct. Then the issue got further out of hand. The sound system broke down and nobody could hear anything. The video images were censored by the SABC. All of this due to ANC’s lakeys.The Speaker and chair of the NCOP reacted by pouring petrol on the fire and called security in to clear out the EFF. Police were involved. This is a big no no. The Parliament is neutral territory where

you may speak without intimidation (within the rules). Then the DA asked about the presence of the police and they walked out. Zuma then made his speech in a half empty parliament with only his lackeys listening and with nothing but more promises. Some of them were fast asleep in any case. The statistics of successes given were so insignificant that it would not have impressed a school child. 50 People prosecuted for corruption? There are more than 50 corrupt people in any local municipality, please!So all in all an utter failure. On the world stage, for all to see. The intelligence of the viewers was seriously disrespected. Small wonder that no one is taking this country seriously! Question is not whether government is effective. It is already imploding. Nothing works anymore.

Ek het die aangeleentheid met mnr. Werner Weber VF+ Provinsiale Leier en Dr Pieter Mulder, VF+ Nasionaleleier, opgeneem. Die agbare Speaker mag enige lid vra om die saal te verlaat. I n d i e n s o ‘ n p e r s o o n w e i e r k a n d i e veiligheidspersoneel se hulp ingeroep word. Daar was twee groepe veiligheidspersoneel. Die een groep was gewapen in die ander groep was ongewapen.

Die ongewapende groep het die EFF verwyder en die gewapende groep het President Zuma omsingel om hom te beskerm. Die grondwet laat die SAPD in die parlement toe as die President se lewe in gevaar is. Stel jouself voor as jou man die President is, ons almal bekommerd sal wees oor sy of haar veiligheid. Ek het gevra om die parlementsopening by te woon maar weens ander werksverpligtinge kon ek nie. Vandag is ek dankbaar dat ek dit nie bygewoon het nie, want ek het al genoeg komedie rolprente en sirkusse gesien. Die opening was ’n teater van die absurde op sy beste. Mangosuthu Buthelezi het tydens die geweld in die Parlement gesê. “Ek dink ons land is werklik aan flarde geskeur. Ek dink nie die struggle het gebeur vir mense om soos gekke op te tree nie.” Inwoners vra my of ek nog moed en hoop vir ons land het. My antwoord is ja, mits politieke partye meer verdraagsaam teenoor mekaar optree, geweld afsweer en sinvolle debatte in Raadsale voer. Kommerwekkend is Julius Malema se stelling dat hy na die volgende Parlementsitting wapens gaan saamneem. Ons bloeddeurdrenkte aarde in Suid-Afrika kan nie nog ‘n druppel bloed inneem nie. Ek besef die politieke arena is wreed en ek self is al op Stadsraadvergaderings persoonlike aangeval en selfs gevloek en gestamp maar geweld is nie ’n opsie vir ons geknelde, verskeurde maar ook mooi land nie. Van ons is nog vasgevang in die draaikolk van die verlede en moet ons losruk van geweld.

Die dinee, wat hoofsaaklik gehou is ter aanvulling van die kerk se gemeentefonds, het onder oud en jonk aanklank gevind. Dames uit die gemeente het elk ‘n tafel gekry wat hulle moes versier en waarby hulle as gasvrou moes optree. Die gasvroue met die mees oorspronklike tafeldékor is beloon met ‘n geskenk. Die 16-jarige Dominique Brand se tafel is as opvolger bekroon, terwyl Marinda van der Wath met die louere weggestap het. Benewens die pryse vir Beste Tafelversiering was daar ook ‘n prys vir Besgeklede Paartjie wat aan Jeandré Potgieter en sy mooi nooi, Cecilia Els, gegaan het. Die paartjie het die trotse eienaars van ‘n eksklusiewe Pieter Curtain-skildery geword. FOLLOWING the introduction of the Volkswagen Up in South Africa, Volkswagen’s international division has released the new Caddy.Improvements to the exterior include updates that bring even this family- and commercial van in line with the current Volkswagen family face. The front lights and bumper section are now even closer in terms of design to Volkswagen’s Golf and Jetta models.The interior, both in the commercial and passenger car trim level, are also improved. The Caddy features a new dashboard and updated switchgear. LOCAL law enforcement officers in the Cape are increasingly coming under attack from irate motorists who show their displeasure by beating - or in some cases biting - them.The latest victim, a member of the Ghost Squad, had to be admitted to hospital after an assault, allegedly by a taxi driver. Mayoral committee member for safety and security, JP Smith, said it was the fifth attack in four months and in several cases officers were bitten during altercations with motorists. Police are investigating what took place last week, after the Ghost Squad officer was taken to hospital with multiple injuries. Provincial police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk said an assault case was opened.The city said the officer had been patrolling the R300 at about 3pm. It is believed the officer spotted a taxi driver in a white Toyota Quantum who had been talking on his cellphone while he had been driving. The officer asked the taxi driver to pull over. “During the subsequent interview, the officer noticed that the driver was intoxicated and tried to make an arrest.”Back-up officers arrived to find the officer and the taxi driver in a confrontation in front of the taxi. “The suspect was forcefully subdued and arrested on charges of drunk driving, resisting arrest, assaulting an officer, damage to property and attempting to flee from lawful custody and for using his cellphone while driving.The officer had injuries on his arms, and legs - including bite marks. He was taken to Kuils River Hospital.Police confirmed that a 26-year-old man was arrested and was expected to appear in Kuils River Magistrate’s Court soon. Smith said it was “an extremely traumatic experience” for the officer and the incident served as a reminder of the dangers officers face daily.

“If enforcement officers are under siege, they can’t protect the public and then the public are under siege.”In other incidents, two officers were knocked off their motorcycles by motorists, a third was assaulted by a taxi driver during a traffic stop and a fourth was bitten by a suspect while making an arrest.Cape Argus

ENTHEOS Christian School hosted the SACSSA Regional Archery day on Saturday 14 February at the picturesque Buffelsvley Guest Farm. This indoor event saw 60+ archers, each take on 3 rounds of 10m and 15m targets. Archers from Barberton, Hoedspruit, Ermelo, Lydenburg as well as Home schools and Individual entries had to withstand extreme heat throughout the day, but still managed to achieve high scores. Five of our six archers qualified to take part in the SACSSA Nationals later this year. All visitors agreed that the beauty of the trip and our area made up for potholes, heat and road works. SACSSA Mpumalanga(Southern African Christian Schools Sport Association) once again gave students the opportunity to enjoy Archery in a fun and professional environment. competition round and finishing in the Top 10 in her age group!

Arrows away on Valentines Day!

ROOIKAT Rugbyklub het saterdag 7 Februarie die Laeveld 7’s aangebied. Die dag het as ’n uiterste sukses uitgedraai.Spanne van Nelspruit, Hoedspruit, Ohrigstad, Malelane en Riverside het deelgeneem aan die kampioenskap.Wedstryde het al 8:30 begin en om 16:00 klaar gemaak.Die Rooikatte het as tuisspan hul goed van hul taak gekwyt en hulself in die finaal bevind. Rooikatte moes teen Nelspruit uitspeel as die algehele wenner vir die dag.Die wedstryd was baie opwindend, Nelspruit

het vinnig twee drieë gedruk, waarna die Katte hard teruggeveg het.Ongelukkig moes die Rooikatte die onderspit delf met die telling 19-12 in Nelspruit se guns. Die Rooikatte kan hul koppe hoog optel, alhoewel hul verloor het was dit geen skande nie, en sien ons uit na n opwindende rugby seisoen wat voorlê, Kom ondersteun ons gerus.
