MARCH 2017 FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Kirksville Arts Members and Supporters, It has been quite a journey since the fire, but Kirksville Arts is moving on. The first exhibit and Lunch and Learn were both a great success. Planning for A Tea to Remember, Summer on the Square, Red Barn, future exhibits and Lunch and Learns continues. One person, who has been instrumental in getting Kirksville Arts up and running so quickly, is Director Judy Neuweg. When she was notified that smoke was coming from the Arts Center, she rushed to the building to remove the quilt exhibit, but couldn't enter. In the wee hours of the morning, while the fire was still burning, Judy met with local officials to provide information about the building. The day after the fire, she began making lists of items lost and what we needed for a new office. Everything was gone. She has worked with the insurance company and has volunteered many, many hours. We owe Judy an enormous thank you.

FROM THE PRESIDENT CONT. While the loss was devasting, the outpouring of support, concern and generosity from this community has been humbling. The night after the fire the KGB (Kirksville Guild of Brewers) held a fund raiser for us. The Freeman Foundation sent a donation for our rebuild campaign the very first week. Melinda Colegrove's third grade class at Ray Miller donated their Christmas Party money to Kirksville Arts. Truman State University, with their commitment to service has been a tremendous resource. The Lincoln exhibit would not have been possible without Truman Gallery allowing us to use their pedestals. While facing the possibility of funding cuts, they shared proceeds from their annual "Friends of the Truman Gallery Fundraiser". Alpha Sigma Gamma donated funds. Members of Phi Delta and Tau Lamba Sigma held a silent art auction on campus with proceeds to us. Tom Trimborn donated proceeds from a silent auction of five of his Lincoln prints to Kirksville Arts. Paul and Colleen Wagner at Gallery 104, Art on the Square organized a wonderful art auction to help with our building campaign. The art was donated by many area artists. Trinity Episcopal Church Choir donated funds from their Mardi Gras dinner to Kirkville Arts. Jana Russon compiled a book celebrating the lost quilts with proceeds from the sale to Kirksville Arts. The Homer Laughlin Company in West Virginia replaced our lost dishes with beautiful Fiestaware. Noon Rotary donated proceeds from their soup supper to us. We have also received numerous donations from individuals. The Arts Center building at 117 South Franklin is now gone. Before demolition began, the building was stripped of all surviving art work that meant so much to many of you. We are taking our time and will consider all options for our next home. We are in the process of developing a strategic plan, which will guide us in planning the future Arts Center. We had an excellent return rate from our recent member survey and appreciate all your input. Results will be summarized in the next newsletter. As we were reminded after the fire, Kirksville Arts was not defined by our building. Kirksville is a truly amazing community. The Legacy Mosaic Tile Mural that was removed from the building had the title of the project in one of the panels, "The heART of Kirksville". Since the fire, we have learned how truly big the heART of Kirksville is. On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank everyone for all your support. Kirksville Arts is returning stronger than ever.

    LINDA TREASURE

LINCOLN EXHIBIT & LUNCH AND LEARN 2017 Community support of the Kirksville Arts Association after the tragic fire and loss of the Kirksville Arts Center in early December has been phenomenal. And so the arts live on in our community. The first exhibit in the new gallery, located at 1902 S. Baltimore, featured “Abe Lincoln” and came from the personal collection of Dr. Thomas Trimborn. Dr. Trimborn has written several books about Lincoln and is a well known Lincoln historian. Works by many artists and some by Trimborn himself uniquely told the Lincoln story . The exhibit spanned January 19th to March 4th, 2017. While the exhibit was in the gallery, Dr. Trimborn presented a second version on “Music that Lincoln Loved” at a Lunch and Learn. Over 40 people participated in the brown bag luncheon, among them 10 students and their teacher from Faith Lutheran Church.

THANK YOU KGB! We want to thank the KGB, Kirksville Guild of Brewers for their generous donation to Kirksville Arts. On December 3, 2016, the evening after the fire that destroyed the Arts Center building, the KGB held a fund raiser at the DuKum Inn to benefit the arts association. We have just received their donation of $1,250! This was an annual event for the brewers and because of the fire they decided to donate their proceeds to Kirksville Arts. It was a lot of fun and we are so appreciative that they chose us for the funds. So, if you see any of these great people, please let them know just how much you appreciate their support to the arts: Felix and Katherine Adler, Betsy Hoscheid, Michael Cummings, Jerry Jones, Ted Frushour, Erin Shaw, Jason Shaw, Sarah Maddox, Johathan Vieker, Lex Towns and Mike Martel. These funds and all capital campaign donations will go toward our future permanent art center. In the upcoming months we will be asking members of the Kirksville community to share your ideas of what you think our next home should include. We are going about this process slowly and we intend for our new permanent home to be a place that everyone in the community will be proud of.

VOLUNTEER OF THE QUARTER Congratulations to Alie Fast, board member and collector of fiesta ware, recently contacted the Homer Laughlin China Co. and told them about the Arts Center fire with consequent loss of all the building contents. The president of the company graciously sent the Kirksville Arts Association 60 place settings of fiesta ware dishes! Way to go Alie!!

MARDI GRAS BY TRINITY EPISCOPAL CHURCH Thank you Trinity Episcopal Church! On Tuesday, February 28th, 2017 the Trinity Episcopal Church hosted a Mardi Gras fundraiser dinner at the corner of Mulanix and Harrison prepared by the choir. Dinner included delicious foods such as gumbo, grits and beignets. The event was a free will donation to Kirksville Arts and we would like to give a special thank you to everyone who participated in this event!

TRUMAN FRIENDS OF THE GALLERY Food, beverages, art, music, and special guests were part of a celebration of service in Kirksville. This year’s Friends of the Gallery Fundraiser, held in the Gallery in Ophelia Parrish on the Truman State Campus on Friday, March 3rd from 6:30-8:30pm, invited its donors to support either the Art Gallery, or the Kirksville Arts Association, or both. This year’s Friend's of the Gallery Fundraiser, coinciding with the last day of Truman’s two exhibitions focusing on the centennial of U.S. involvement in World War I, and in response to the fire at the Kirksville Arts Center, was focusing on the theme of service. Donors enjoyed thematic food beverages, music and good conversation during this 18th annual celebration. Dr. Cole Woodcox, one of the organizer’s of this year’s fundraiser felt this exhibition, including materials relating to Kirksville’s participation in World War I, called for a theme focusing on all kinds of service to our community. “Then, when the fire occurred at the arts center, we immediately knew we wanted this event to be about the wider community. We know our quality of life in Kirksville depends upon so many members of our community who serve. These include first responders, teachers, local business leaders, artists, donors, the media, civil servants, veterans, and active members of the armed forces.” The suggested donation from the general public was $40 for this event, with a donation of $20 suggested for first responders, members and veterans of the armed forces, members of the Kirksville Arts Association and the Missouri and Southern Iowa Arts Guild (MOSI), and K-12 teachers.

We thank everyone who wasassociated with this event for including Kirksville Arts as a recipient for donations.

QUILTS - THE LAST EXHIBIT "The recent Kirksville Arts fire (Dec 2, 2016) destroyed about 30 heirloom quilts. The day of the fire, about 4pm, I walked around the Gallery and made pictures of the Exhibit. Then about 8:30pm the flames ate up the Kirksville Arts Building; hook, line and sinker! I thought: 'I will make a book of these pictures to preserve our quilts.' Wow! These stories are pictures will far outlast our quilts. I want to present to you, The Book 'Quilts - The Last Exhibit'" - Jana Russon Please visit janarusson.blogspot.com to see images from the book just like pictured to the left. Thank You Jana for preserving these precious items!!

GALLERY 104 ART AUCTION THANK YOU GALLERY 104!!! February 4th, Paul and Colleen Wagner held a fund raiser for Kirksville Arts at Gallery 104 Art on the Square. We want to thank the Wagners, all the artists who donated auction items and the businesses that supported the event. It was a fantastic afternoon. $6,780 was raised for our rebuilding effort. Many wonderful pieces of art were sold. Dick Taylor of Taylor Auction Company did an awesome job. He made the day fun and entertaining. The DuKum Inn and Maxwell's provided wine and other beverages and Colton's Steak House & Grill and Take Root Cafe donated food for the delicious reception. B&H Graphics designed the flyers to publicize the event. Volunteers, Maureen McHale, Janet Hawkins, Sharon Pritchard, Judy Harris, Darrell Williams, Krista Baker, Paula Cochran and Sharon McGahn also assisted with the auction. RAY MILLER ELEMENTARY 3RD GRADERS THANK YOU THIRD GRADERS!!! Melinda Colegrove at Ray Miller Elementary has an amazing 3rd grade class! They voted to donate $62.84, which would have paid for their Christmas party, to Kirksville Arts. One child even donated a bag of red shredded paper. What a selfless and generous group of students. This gift not only touches our heart, it also strengthens our commitment to plan for the future. From the bottom of our hearts we want to thank them, their families and Mrs. Colegrove. This self sacrificing act reflects the values they've learned from their families and teachers. Kirksville is home to some pretty fantastic people. We will use the red shredded paper when we have a grand opening of our new permanent arts center.

CALL FOR ARTISTS Call to Artists!! Applications for the 43rd Red Barn Arts and Crafts Festival to be held on Saturday, September 16, 2017 are in the mail with the application also posted on the Kirksville website. Join more than 100 fine artists and crafters at this popular destination festival.

SORORITY SUPPORT! We would like to thank the ladies of Alpha Sigma Gamma from Truman State University for their recent donation to our Rebuild Capital Campaign. Shortly after the fire, Katey Wetter with ASG contacted us about making a donation. Also, we would like to thank Phi Delta and Tau Lamba Sigma from Truman State University for holding an art auction to raise funds for Kirksville Arts. While Kirksville is home to these students for only a few years they leave a lasting impact with their contribution to the Kirksville community. We are honored that they chose KAA as one of the philanthropies they chose to support this year.
