The Measure of Success
FARO was founded in 1982 by Simon Raab and Greg Fraser who met while completing their PhD
work at Mc Gill University in Montreal, Canada. After two years of development, FARO launched three
medical/surgical products based on its articulated arm measurement technology in 1984, 1986 and
1988 respectively. The company moved from Montreal to Lake Mary, Florida in 1990 and shortly after
that the Company was asked to develop a larger, more robust version of its technology for use as a
portable quality control tool for manufacturers.
By 1994 FARO had completely transitioned from the medical markets to the much larger worldwide
industrial manufacturing market. On the basis of strong sales and profit growth and the large
underserved market, FARO went public in 1997 and its shares began trading on the NASDAQ
exchange under the symbol FARO. Faro acquired three companies in 1998, 2002 and 2005 to broaden
its worldwide distribution and to expand its product lines into laser based inspection technology.
FARO is a pioneer and leader in the worldwide Computer-Aided Measurement market.

Turning reality into a virtualrepresentation is being employed
in more and more aspects of our
everyday lives. From modeling
ancient buildings, production plants,
crime scenes and football stadiums
to design concepts for cars and for
replacement parts which have no
design data, reverse engineering is
a broad field allowing us to create
virtually anything we can touch.
Non Contact Inspection
Reverse Engineering
The point cloud acquisition devices such
as the FARO ScanArm and Laser Scanner
LS dense clouds of 3-D points can now
capture from the tightest accuracies to
76m measuring envelope, this data can
easily be aligned to the nominal data
in order to compare virtuality to reality.Geomagic Qualify, Polyworks or Rapidform
can be used to perform 3-D surface form
comparison, 2-D cross sectional analysis
and feature inspection.
Part dimensions can be verified and point
clouds can even be compared to point
clouds allowing the fit two actual parts to
be compared.
All of this can be completed without ever
coming in contact with the part allowing
soft, deformable and complex shapes to
be easily inspected.LaserL

With the release of the revolutionary
Platinum FaroArm portable CMM, FARO
Technologies has invented the worlds most
accurate and advanced portable CMM in
manufacturing history.
One of a kind
The Platinum FaroArms .0005 accuracy
renders traditional CMMs, hand tools and
other portable cmms obsolete.
Industry changing
The Platinum FaroArm is lighter than a
standard portable CMM, and includes
extended-use on-board batteries.
Portability
In seconds, the FARO TrackArm can switch
from the Tracker to the Arm, enabling the
Platinum FaroArms six degrees of freedom
to reach the hidden points that are out
of the Laser Trackers line of sight even
around corners and inside. The big benefit
of TrackArm technology is that the user
no longer has to go through the lengthy
process of establishing reference points.
This is accomplished in part by having a
dedicated laser target mounted on the
Platinum FaroArm.
The CAM2 Measure X software provides
a simple user interface to quickly and
easily switch back and forth between the
Tracker and Arm.
First Article InspectionPrototype parts are typically
produced in small quantities,
individual parts can easily be
measured either geometrically
or compared to nominal data
to ensure that the part was
correctly produced.
Be the part a one off reverse engineered
replacement part or the prototype for a larger
batch to follow the time saving made by avoiding
the lengthy programming procedure of a
traditional inspection tool is a huge advantage.
Alignment & Verification
A part can be aligned to a CAD model or to adevice or fixed object to assess the variation
in relative position such as changes caused by
temperature drift or vibration. This movement can
be assessed over time allowing the operator to see
and potential changes occurring in the parts setup
which may lead to unnecessary defects or wastage
during the manufacturing process.

CAD based InspectionWhether using a contact or non contact
inspection device every FARO product is capable
of comparing a part a part to nominal data. The
hard probes of FAROs Laser Tracker or FaroArm
can compare complex geometry, surface
tolerance and feature positions to nominal data.
FARO Laser Scanning devices can be used for
non contact comparisons.
Repeat PartMeasurement
Measurement directly against CAD
data allows the operator to see real
time deviations from nominal, this
allows parts to be produced including
an inspection report certifying the part
has been machined within acceptable
tolerances.
FaroArm
Repeat part measurement is now easy.
FARO SoftCheck Tools software runs
on top of CAM2Measure allowing the
powerful inspection capability of Measure
to be captured in programs so simple to
execute it becomes childs play. A series of
photographs displays the various programs
available to the user (naturally this can
be customized according to the user
profile) and the user is guided through
each measurement via green or red balls
appearing on the part on the screen.
The colors correspond to which button
on the FaroArm should be pressed. Once
the program is complete the inspection
report stored and is available for viewing
and the process may begin again.

This five-minute, automatic
compensation routine ensures the
highest accuracy regardless of where
the Tracker is mounted.
Self Comp
CalibrationRobots require calibration to operateaccurately in their work cell. Over time
robots may drift from the intended nominal
path programmed. Recalibration is required
to ensure the robot is performing its
programmed accurately.
Inspection
The FARO Laser Tracker provides the fastestand most accurate robot cell calibration
available today. This system works with
all makes and models of robots and saves
countless hours of teach time and the high
accuracy translates into high reliability on
the production line.
The FARO Laser Tracker enables usersto increase the accuracy of their robotic
systems, and eliminate the time consuming
manual teaching or touch-up work. This
system provides a solution for accurate Off
Line Programming (OLP), re-mastering
following a crash, setting or recovering Tool
Center Point, and moving a robotic system
from integration site to production site.
Inspection of parts and providing a
measurement report is an essential part
of todays lean manufacturing world.
Quality standards are higher than ever
reducing production waste and costs as
well as non conformance which can leadto production down time.

Range
Using the FARO Laser Scanner LS, a point
cloud of the entire environment can be
generated. This documents the structure
allowing the user to take measurements
and view the as built region in a virtual
world. If necessary the point cloud data
can be surfaced to generate a CAD modelwhich can be used for comparison or
reconstruction. The FARO ScanArm can be
used in a similar way to document smaller
objects up to approximately 3 meter in size.
The data capture is far faster using laser
scanning technology compared to
conventional documentation techniques.
Also working with the actual data captured
from the environment allows planners to
incorporate deviations from original design
plans in their rework of facilities, reducingthe risk of clashes occurring during the
installation of new features. This can
significantly reduce project turnaround
time leading to huge savings.

Process
Architecture
Over years buildings may undergo major
alterations and in many instances these
alterations are not recorded in the original
construction plans. For example door
positions or windows may change. When
planning a future addition or alteration to
a building an initial 3-D laser scan survey
will accurately document the current
layout, this means that any future plans
made are based on the exact current status
of the building, not on previous plansmade which may or may not be correct.
Refineries and rigs are characterized by
mazes of pipe work, documenting existing
setups and planning alterations is greatly
facilitated by the inclusion of accurate as
built 3-D data. The FARO Laser Scanner
LS has been implemented for its scanning
speed, modular and robust design and
its portability in order to scan in entire
plants and rigs. The scan data is delivered
to a CAD system and the accurate 3-D
representation can be quickly modeled.
Over time any design modifications can be
viewed in the design to check for potential
collisions and rework necessary.
