ALTHOUGH the shape may be vague-ly reminiscent of the 1957 originallittle else about the Fiat 500 sticks to

its predecessors back to basics appeal Thistime round the 500 isunashamedly chic offer-ing an upmarket lookand feel that willdoubtless carve asizeable chunkinto MINIs bot-tom line

Fiat has lat-terly built areputation forhaving a widerange of excel-lent power-plants especial-ly at the smallerend of the productportfolio Indeedthe 75bhp 13-litre 16vMultijet diesel engine fit-ted to the 500 is so good that itrather overshadows the otherwiseexcellent pair of petrol powerplants Thesecomprise an entry-level 69bhp 12 8v and apunchy 100bhp 14-litre 16v Five or six speedmanual transmissions are offered and the500 has been designed to replicate the orig-

inal cars nimble feel and ability to put asmile on its drivers face

At 165m wide 149m high and 355m longthe 500 doesnt take up a great deal of spaceand delicious design details are every-

IF I was in the market for a super-mini I must admit one of theold Vauxhall Corsas would

never have made my shortlistIts a cutthroat market and while

the Corsa covered all the bases ade-quately there was just too muchexcellence among the opposition tomake it stand out

THRILL seekers may be inclinedto look elsewhere but the well-built and comfortable i30 from

Hyundai is a serious candidate in thefamily hatch sector

Buyers seduced by the long warran-ty and high equipment levels willoverlook the non-descript design

The i30 is Hyundairsquos version of theCeersquod which is sold by its subsidiarycompany Kia and was given a headstart of six months or so on the UKmarket The Ceersquod received a glowingresponse from all quarters settingstandards in quality and sophistica-tion never before approached by aKorean marque in the European mar-ketplace

There was the slight caveat insertedby some that the Ceersquod was good ldquofora south east Asian productrdquo but Irsquod sayit was good full stop And so is the i30

A full complement of engines isoffered with the i30 and that includesa pair of CRTD common-rail dieselswith variable geometry turbocharg-ing for improved refinement

The entry-point into i30 ownershipis the 14-litre petrol with a not incon-sequential 107bhp and then you havethe 120bhp 16

The diesels are 16 and 20 in capaci-ty with outputs of 113 and 138bhprespectively Itrsquos a good spread ofoptions though none are particularlyheart stopping in their performance

The big dieselrsquos 304Nm maximumtorque helps it to a 0-60mph time of103s and it will roll on to a 127mph topspeed

All models get five-speed manualtransmission except the 20-litrewhich has a six-speed box and a four-speed automatic is available with the16-litre petrol

As well as ABS braking with brake-force distribution all i30 models fea-ture ESP stability control which is alaudable inclusion and emblematic ofHyundairsquos intention for the car tocompete in the upper reaches of thefamily hatchback segment

Further safety provision comes inthe form of twin front and sideairbags plus full length curtainairbags

Inside space is plentiful for the rearseat occupants and the huge boot sug-gested by the carrsquos bulging rear end isonly a mild disappointment

Itrsquos a good size for the class ratherthan enormous with 340 litres avail-able Fold the rear bench and this risesto 1250 litres

Hyundai has ascended the ranks ofthe UK car market with a successionof models based on thefamiliar ldquohigh specifi-cation low pricerdquomantra

The i30rsquos intendedmove into the familyhatch mainstream hasseen things changesomewhat

Affordability will stillform a big part of thei30rsquos appeal but withvalues starting atpound10995 and rising topound16595 itrsquos not cheap inthe way its Accentpredecessor was

Three trim levels areavailable ndash ComfortStyle and Premium ndashand these are fairly selfexplanatory in thatComfort keeps it sim-ple Style adds a vague-ly sporty element andPremium shovels on

more luxurious featuresRoad burning performance isnrsquot the

strong suit of the i30rsquos engine rangebut these units are well capable ofadministering a mild kicking if chal-lenged on grounds of economyOfficial figures reveal a 465mpgshowing for the 14-litre with the 16 amile per gallon thirstier

The 16-litre diesel returns animpressive 601mpg and the 20-litre aless eye-catching 514mpg

The i30 was designed specifically toraise the profile of Hyundai in the bigEuropean markets and itrsquos a signifi-cant step in the right direction

Hyundai may lack the brand profileto compete with more establishednames head on but with a few moreproducts of the i30rsquos calibre itsupward progression could be swift

These can be changed at anytime in five stages from warmorange to sporting bluedepending on personal taste -quite mad but undeniablyfunky Rear seat space a biggrumble amongst customershas been improved withrecessed knee cut-outs in thfront seat backs

The engine line up meritsinvestigation The One uses a95bhp 14-litre engine while thediesel in the MINI Cooper Dalso offers big improvementsThe cars likely to provoke thebiggest clamour the Cooperand Cooper S both use versionsof the same 16-litre power-plant The Cooper as before isnormally aspirated this timeround being propelled by a120bhp engine that will get itfrom rest to 60mph in 89 sec-onds and on to a top speed of126mph The Cooper S gets an

intercooled and turbochargedversion of this engine thatsgood for 175bhp and will punt itthrough 60mph in 69 secondsand on to a top speed of 140mph

THE compact 1 Series has offered a new direc-tion for BMW that continues forward withthese latest revised models Some things

however are reassuringly familiarBefore we get into that though youll need to know

about the latest changes First and most obvious-ly there are now both three-door and Coupe mod-els selling alongside the existing five-door carpriced from pound16650 At the same time as expandingthe range in this way BMW has taken the oppor-tunity to introduce some new technology to theline-up Clever ideas like Brake EnergyRegeneration an Automatic Start-Stop functionand Electric Power Steering are now combinedwith lower rolling resistant tyres and a gearshiftchange indicator to encourage economical motor-ing These innovations are in addition to the use ofvariable valve technologies and High-PrecisionDirect Injection engines on some 1 Series modelsthat boost power output but cut fuel consumptionand emissions
