Engaging Children as Partners in Practice to Support their Mental Health and Wellbeing – Webinar This webinar is the second in a series focusing on children’s mental health. It has been co-produced by Child Family Community Australia (CFCA) and Emerging Minds. Enabling children to have a genuine voice in decisions affecting their lives is a challenge faced by practitioners across a broad range of sectors. Yet it is a practice that significantly contributes to child safety and to useful early intervention and prevention approaches to support the mental health and wellbeing of children.

For practitioners, issues in adopting this practice can include: confidence in engaging children in developmentally appropriate ways; agency structural and workflow issues that inadvertently limit flexibility and creativity; the expectations of parents and carers on the type of intervention required; and finding ways of working collaboratively that minimise power imbalances between adults and children.

In this webinar, we will draw on years of experience in working with children and families to discuss the practices that they have found useful in creating genuine partnerships to support the mental health and wellbeing of children and their families.

RESOURCES

Every Suburb, Every Town: Mapping Poverty in VictoriaVCOSS and economic modelling firm NATSEM have launched a major report and online mapping project, providing new data and analysis previously unavailable. For the first time, the report reveals the different ‘faces of poverty’ across different suburbs and towns. The analysis estimates there are 774,000 Victorians live in poverty (13.2%), with the poverty rate in regional Victoria (15.1%) higher than in Melbourne (12.6%).

In Melbourne’s outer western, northern and south-eastern suburbs (Wyndham, Melton, Casey, Hume and Cardinia), the common ‘face of poverty’ is a family struggling to get by. Families weren’t as dominant in the poverty data covering central Melbourne, the inner suburbs or regional areas.

In the council areas of Cardinia, Frankston, Melton, Mornington Peninsula and Moorabool, single parents were the most likely to live in poverty.

Across central Melbourne, more than 40% of people living in poverty are younger people aged 24 or under, reflecting a big student population.

The research is in two parts: online, interactive maps allowing you to explore the   data   and our detailed observations report (PDF), providing more analysis and discussion. This report has different chapters gender, age, housing status, employment and family status. It also has a list of council areas with local poverty rates and poverty character detailed.

Material Deprivation and Social Exclusion Among Young Australians: A Child-Focused ApproachIn an Australian – first, this report draws on research with young Australians both in Government high schools in NSW and The Smith Family’s Learning for Life (LfL) program, to explore what they see as the essential things and activities all young people need to live a ‘normal’ life. The research reflects The Smith Family’s organisational focus of hearing the voice of young people themselves. It provides a very concrete and tangible picture of what poverty and disadvantage looks like for young people in Australia today, from their perspective. It shows the extent of child disadvantage in Australia and

why this matters. The impact of disadvantage on young people’s lives, including their engagement with school and their sense of wellbeing, is clear from the research. See the full report here.
