  • Thismanualisanimportantresourceforcommunityplaygroups.ItwasdevelopedbyPlaygroupWAtoprovideinformation,advice,strategiesandtemplatestosupportthefamiliestoestablishandmanagesuccessfulcommunityplaygroups.Itaimstoshowhowtogetthemostoutoftheplaygroupexperienceforchildren,adultsand the community.

    1.1 How to use this manualThereisnorightorwrongwaytousethismanual!

    Eachplaygroupisdifferentsoitlikelythatdifferentaspectsofthemanualwillbemoreorlessusefultodifferentplaygroups.

    Togetthebestoutofthismanualwesuggesteachplaygroupreaditandusetheinformationrelevant to them.

    ThePlaygroupWAManualisanonlineresourcebutcanbedownloadedandprintedasnecessary.Somegroupsmayfinditusefultohaveaprintedcopyofthewholemanualattheplaygroupwhileothersmayjustkeepcopiesofthemostrelevantsectionstothem.

    “ A playgroup is a group of parents, caregivers and extended family who come together with their babies and young children in a relaxed and friendly environment to learn together through play.”

  • Aplaygroupisagroupofparents,caregiversandextendedfamilywhocometogetherwiththeirbabiesandyoungchildreninarelaxedandfriendlyenvironmenttolearntogether through play.

    Playgroupsvaryfromonesessionaweekmadeupofthreeormorefamiliestomultiplesessionsovertheweekwithover200 families.InWAtherearealmost1300communityplaygroupsessionsrunningeveryweekthroughtheeffortsoffamilies and volunteers.

    Itisimportanttonotethatplaygroupsaredifferenttochildcareandkindergartenprograms.Atplaygroupparentsandcaregiversattendwiththeirchildrenandretainresponsibilityforsupervisingthechildrentheybringto playgroup.

    Somecommoncharacteristicsofplaygroupinclude: • Membersincludeparents,caregiversandyoungchildrenfrom 0-5yearsofage

    • Meetregularly,oftenfortwohourseachsession

    • Familyrunandorganisedbymembers

    2.1 What happens at playgroupFirstandforemostPLAY!Playgroupsessionsarealsogenerally a combination of free play and planned activities including:

    • Indoorandoutdoorplay• Physicalplay• Artsandcraft• Musicandmovement• Storytimeandnurseryrhymes• Conversationandsupport• Morningtea/snacksorrefreshments

    2.2ThebenefitsofplaygroupPlaygroupsbenefitchildren,familiesandthe wider community.

    Whilstitistruechildrencanplayanywhere,playgrouphasanaddedbenefitofprovidingopportunitiesforplayingwithotherchildrenandpractisingimportantsocialskills.

    Importantly,playgroupalsoprovidestheopportunitywhereparentsandchildrencanplaytogether,whichiscriticaltochildren’shealthydevelopment.Bycreatingaspacewhereparentsandcaregivershavetheopportunitytospendtimewiththeirchildren,playgroupscanenhancerelationshipsthrough play.

    2.3TypesofplaygroupsAllplaygroupsaresimilarinnature;babiesandyoungchildrenaccompaniedbycaringadultsmeetingregularlytoplayandlearntogether.Playgroupscanalsobequitediverseandunique.All familiesaredifferentandbringwiththemarangeofexperiences,skills,interestsand expectations.

    Sometimestheyareorganisedaroundaparticularneedorcommoninterestsuchasbaby,non-Englishspeaking,specialneeds,educationalphilosophyorspecificapproachtoparenting.Anyonecanattendtheseplaygroupsbuttheyusuallyattractfamilieswithsimilarinterestsorneeds.

    • Groupsforspecificages-baby,toddlerand3+sessions

    Therearemanyplaygroupsthathavearangeofdifferentagesinthegroupbutsometimesfamilieswanttoattendaplaygroupwherechildrenaresimilarinagetotheirownchildorbecausetheywanttheplaygroupsessiontofocusonactivitiestoenhanceaparticulardevelopmentalstage.When creatingaplaygroupforaspecificageforchildren,makesuretoysandactivitiesareageappropriateandsupportthelearninganddevelopmentofdifferentskills.PlaygroupWAhasactivitysheetsandhomemadetoyideasforthedifferentagesandstagesofdevelopment.

    Activity Sheets and Resources

    • Home-basedgroups

    Somefamiliespreferhome-basedplaygroupsasitmaybeeasierforthechildrentoplaywithasmallgroupofchildreninahomesetting.Parentsmayevenfinditeasiertogettoknoweachotherinhomeplaygroupssincetheytendtobesmaller.Itissuggestedtokeepthegroupbetweensixandeightfamilies.Witholderandmoremobilechildren,tripstoalocalparkorlibraryarealsoagreatidea.

    • Fathers’groups

    Manyfathersalreadyattendcommunityplaygroups.Someprefertojoinafathers’onlyplaygroupwheretheplaygroupisrunbylocaldadsandofferstheopportunitytohangoutandoffersupportforfatherswhoaretheirchildren’sprimary caregiver.

    • Groupsoffamiliesfromculturallyandlinguisticallydiverse backgrounds

    Familiesfromculturallyandlinguisticallydiverse(CALD)backgroundschoosetomeettogethertosocialisewithfamilieswhospeakthesamelanguageorcomefromsimilarculturalbackgroundsandtogivetheirchildrenaculturallyrichexperience.AcoupleofpopularlanguageandculturalplaygroupsincludeJapaneseand Frenchplaygroups.

    • Flyinflyout(FIFO)familygroups

    TheseplaygroupsconsistoffamilieswhohaveafamilymemberwhoworksonaFIFObasis.ItisagreatopportunitytomeetotherFIFOfamiliesthatknowexactlywhatitislikewhenyouarehomealone,whiletheotherparent/partnerisawayatworkandshareparentingtipsandchallenges.Theyareagreatnetworkofsupportwhetheryouarestayingathomeorflyinginandout.

    • Naturebasedgroups

    Naturebasedplaygroupsareaboutgettingoutsideandenjoyingnatureonaregularbasis.Theyaimtoconnectyoungchildrenwithnaturethroughweekly,fortnightly,ormonthlysessions.Takingplaygroupoutsideintherainorshineisalwaysfun.Naturebasedplaygroupsprovidefamiliestheopportunitytoshareoutdooradventuresandexperiencethebenefitsoftimespentoutside together.

    • Intergenerationalgroups

    Intergenerationalplaygroupsbringtogetherthreeorfourgenerations.Intergenerationalplaygroupscanalsobeestablishedinavarietyofsettingsincludingcommunity,schooloragedcaresettingssuchasresidentialcarefacilities,retirementvillagesandcommunitybasedseniorscentres.Theseplaygroupsprovideseniors,childrenandtheirparentsandcaregiverswithopportunitiestointeractthroughplay.

    • Grandparentgroups

    Grandparentsoftenattendcommunityplaygroupsandsomeformtheirownplaygroup.Withmanygrandparentsprovidingcarefortheirgrandchildrenthesegroupscanprovidemuchneededpeersupport.

  • PlaygroupWAhasbeensupporting,servicingandestablishingplaygroupsthroughoutWesternAustraliasince1972.

    PlaygroupWA(formerlycalledthePlaygroupAssociationofWesternAustralia)beganin1972andhasgrownfromatinyofficeinVictoriaParkwithonestaffmembertoatwostoreyofficeinNorthPerthand20staffmembers.Currentlymorethan12,000familiesenjoythebenefitsofplaygroupinsessionsoperatingfromEsperancetoKununurra,fromLeonoratoLancelinandthroughoutthePerthmetropolitanarea.Playgroup WAhasmorethan450memberplaygroups.

    PlaygroupWAisacommunityorganisationrunonanot-for-profitbasis.ManagementofPlaygroupWAisvestedinavoluntaryboard,electedeachOctoberattheAnnualGeneralMeeting.TheBoardisresponsiblefortheoverallmanagementinareassuchaspolicydevelopmentandfinancialmanagement.

    6.2.1 Some simple strategies to delegate the work

    Itisimportanttorememberthatlotsofpeoplehaveusefulskillsandexperienceandarehappytohelpout.So don’tbeafraidtoaskforhelp.Sometimespeopledon’tknowthattheworkloadishardtomanagebyoneortwopeopleandareonlytoohappytotakesomeoftheload.

    Askingforvolunteersisagreatplacetostart.Geteverybodytotellthegroupwhatskillstheyhave,whatthey are good at or like doing and then look at how the jobscanbematchedto the people.

    Iftheplaygroupislargewithmultiplesessionshavingdesignatedpositionswithroledescriptionsmaybenecessary.For example,theplaygroupmaydecidetohavesessionleadersandcommitteememberstocarryoutsomekeytasks. See7.2.6 CommitteeRolesandResponsibilities.

    Foravarietyofreasonsmembersofplaygroupcommitteesmay resign.Ifthishappens:

    • Thank them for their contribution

    • Ifthereasonforresigningisnotclear,talktotheresigningmembertoseeifthereisanythingthatmightencourage them to remain on the committee

    • Taketheopportunitytoreviewtheoperationofyourcommitteeandtomakechangeswhereappropriate

    Committeesworkbestwhentheworkloadisshared.Allocatingkeytaskstospecificmembersisagoodwaytoensurethattheimportanttasksoftheplaygrouparecarriedoutandthatsomeoneisresponsibleforcoordinatingeachofthekeyareas.Italsohelpstoensurethatpeopledon’t‘burnout’andthattheworkissharedfairly.Ideally,everyoneneedstoworktogethertohelpothercommitteememberswhenneeded.Playgroupswherethecommitteedutiesaresharedamongthegroupandjustdonebyoneortwopeoplewillhaveamuchbetterchanceatsuccessandlongevity.

    Playgroupsvaryandsothecommitteestructuresrequired bydifferentplaygroupswillalsovary.

    Key committee positionsThecommitteewillgenerallyconsistofapresident,secretary,treasurerandenrolmentofficer.Iftheplaygrouphasmultiplesessionsitisagoodideatohavearepresentativefromeachsessionaspartofthecommitteeaswell.Thishelpstoensure all sessionsarekeptinformedandarerepresentedindecision-making.

    Managingtheactivitiesoftheplaygroupinvolvesdifferenttasksandoftenmembersoutsidethecommitteehaveskillsandexpertisethatcanbevaluabletocommittees.Invitingthosememberstohelpwithspecifictaskscanhelptoreducetheworkloadofthecommitteemembers,helpmakemembersfeelvaluedandincludedandultimatelyensurethesuccessof the playgroup.

    Playgroupmembersarevolunteersandtheirtimeandenergyistoovaluabletowasteonineffectiveandunnecessarymeetings.Soitisimportanttodecidehowoftenmeetingsareneeded,whereandwhentheyshouldbeheldandhowlongtheyshouldbe.The meetingalsoneedstobeplannedwithaclearagenda soeveryoneknowswhatwillbediscussedandtheycan come prepared.

    ItisalsoagoodideatoaskcommitteememberstoRSVPtheiravailabilityformeetings.Thereisnothingmorefrustratingthanarrivingforameetingtofindthereisnotenoughpeoplepresenttogetthe workdone.

    7.2.8.1Frequencyofmeetings

    Anumberoffactorswillinfluencehowoftenmeetingsareheld.Ingeneral,meetingsshouldbeheldasoftenasisnecessarytoencouragemaximumparticipationandcommunicationandtogetthingsdone.Ameetingonceamonthoronceatermmaybesufficientforyourplaygrouptooperateeffectively.

    Smaller,single-sessionplaygroupsmaynotneedformalmeetingsasdiscussioncantakeplacelessformallyduringthesession.Larger,multi-sessionplaygroupsusuallyneedtoholdmoreformalmeetingstomakeplansfor the playgroup.

    Itisalwaysagoodideatoholdanendofyearmeeting.Inasmallonesessionplaygroupthismightinvolveaplanningsessionduringtheplaygroupsessionfollowedbyasocialevent.Forlargerplaygroupstheremaybemorespecifictasksthatneeddoing,suchasconfirmingcommitteemembershipforthenextyear.

    IncorporatedplaygroupswillberequiredtoholdanAnnualGeneralMeeting.
