STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT:
“Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.” Mark
1:17 Jesus’ call to “Follow me” is a call to all Christians! The call is in the here and now, in our present circumstances, not when we think we are “ready” or have everything in order. Good stewardship of our God-given gifts means that things aren’t always going to go according to our schedule and that God has a much better plan in store for each of us.

Sunday Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Dt 18:15-20; Ps 95:1-2, 6-7, 7-9; 1 Cor
7:32-35;Mk 1:21-28
As Moses challenged the Israelites to listen to God’s voice,
so we are called to hear the voice of Jesus and live out his
teachings by what we say and do, whatever our vocation in
life may be.
THE THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Sponsor of the week:
Crai ’s corner
A Note from our Director of Music This weekend’s prelude sets the tone of the location of the Gospel, on the bank of the Sea of Galilee. Handel’s “Water Music Suite” was actually written to be played as entertainment along the water for a cruise that King George I was having in Great Britain in 1717. While the scene in the Gospel isn’t quite a relax-ing cruise, Jesus does find his first disciples on the bank of the Sea of Galilee. This call to ministry continues what we heard last week-end, this weekend we hear of Mark’s account of this call, while last weekend we heard John’s. All four of the men we hear about today were simply living their normal lives but dropped everything to follow Jesus. This is exactly what our offertory and communion hymns speak of this weekend as well. Like the prelude, our com-munion hymn, “Lord, When you Came to the Seashore,” paints the image of the water to us and puts us in the place of the disciples. Christ does not seek us because we’re wise or wealthy; our boats don’t have money or weapons for fighting. All he is doing is sim-ply calling us to his shore and to follow his call. Our offertory hymn, which may be new to some of you, is actually very popular among youth today for diocesan Confirmation and at world youth events. As this hymn, “The Summons,” prays, this call we hear of in the Gospel isn’t always easy. Can we leave our old lives behind to follow Jesus? Can we risk the hostile stare? Will we let it be known by how we live our lives that we are Christians? These are questions we must pray on while we sing this hymn to be true dis-ciples of Christ. This weekend’s first reading shows God’s compassion and mercy while the second reading of St. Paul reminds us that our time on earth is quick; we must, as the Psalmist says, be taught the ways of Christ who calls us before time runs out. It is this Christ, the Son of God in three persons to whom we sing our praise to during the opening hymn, who calls us to him. The choir’s anthem at the 10am Mass blends all of these themes together in a text going back to the early 1800s, “Dear Lord and Father of Mankind.” The text prays that the Lord forgive us of our foolish ways as he did to those in the city of Nineveh, so that we can sit calmly by the sea to hear the call of the Lord. This call does not take place in an earthquake, strong wind, or fire, but rather in a still small voice of calm. That calm voice which the first disciples heard on that bank of the still waters of the Sea of Galilee, is the same voice calling us to our renewed faith in Christ and, especially in this year of Mary his mother, Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO January 21, 2018
THE THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Blessed Cardinal
Newman wrote this beautiful prayer which is a reflection not just on his life but on all our lives: “God has created me’ for some definite service;
He has committed some work to me which He has not
committed to another. I have a mission. I may never
know exactly what that mission is in this life. I shall be
told it in the next. I have a part in a great work. I am a
link in a chain, a bound of connection between persons.
He has not created me for nothing. I shall do good. I
shall do His work. I shall be an angel of peace, a pref-
acer of truth in my own place, even if I do not realize
what I am doing. But, if I keep His commandments, I will
serve Him in my calling”.
“Here I am Lord, I come to do your will.”
