Темата се оформи в резултат от близкото запознаване с техните работи и това позволи експозицията да се изгради по един напълно естествен начин. преобладаващите природни мотиви и теми в изследваните произведения неизбежно ни насочиха към йохан волфганг фон гьоте и неговите проучвания в областта на връзката между природа и изкуство. гьоте вижда природата и изкуството като два напълно противоположни полюса, като магнити, които силно се привличат, но между които няма опозиция. Той развива феноменологичния подход към естествената история, като алтернатива на природните науки по време на просвещението. отношението към човека като към статична единица, механичното възприемане на универса и линеарното развитие на науката довеждат до изключително рационалистичен подход. гьоте настоява върху взаимодействието между човек и природа. Смисълът трябва да се поражда от свързването на наблюдението и мисленето, чувстването, интуицията, въображението и вдъхновението. The artists of the show – Alicja Kwade, Annette Kelm, Florian Meisenberg, Jorinde Voigt, Michael Sailstorfer, Norbert Bisky, and Olaf Nicolai, have already built up remarkable biographies and formidable careers, in both major international forums and the art market. This meeting is important to us for the purpose of a shared experience in conceptual and aesthetic quests, as well as for understanding the mechanisms and functionality of the art world. The exhibition was not created based on a pre-defined theme. The primary consideration was the artists we wanted to showcase, which are at the center of a dynamic turning point, in the topical art conversation. The theme came together as a result of a close acquaintance with the works, which allowed for the exposure to be conceived in a completely organic manner. The prevailing natural motifs and themes within the works, inevitably directed us to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and his research on the relationship between nature and art. Goethe sees nature and art as two completely opposite poles, like magnets that are heavily drawn to one another, but with no opposition. He developed the phenomenological approach towards a natural history, as an alternative to natural sciences during the Enlightenment. The approach to man as a static unit, the mechanical perception of the universe and the linear development of science, led to an extremely rationalistic approach. Goethe insists on the interaction between man and nature. The meaning must come from connecting observation and thinking, feeling, intuition, imagination and inspiration. Mechanical classification is not enough to comprehend the nature of nature. Thought and conceptualization are needed; knowledge is also a question of associations. Goethe suggests that there are more experiments and hypotheses that can be conducted in nature. Observation is the first natural step but since the senses can only reach the outer form, object study requires the inclusion of intuition, which studies with the “eyes of the mind”. Goethe’s student and book editor, Rudolf Steiner applies Goethe’s methodology, resulting in a lively approach to Nature in performance and fine arts. изложбата продължава една от линиите в политиката на галерия „Структура“ да показва успешни примери на съвременни художници. включените автори – норберт Биски, Михаел зайлщорфер, алисия кваде, анете келм, флориан Майзенберг, олаф николай и йоринде фойгт, вече имат забележителни биографии и активни кариери, както в областта на големите международни форуми, така и на пазара на изкуството. за нас срещата с тях е важна заради споделения опит по посока на идейните и естетическите търсения, но и на механизмите и правилата на функциониране на художествения свят.

Тази изложба не е правена по предварително формулирана тема. на първо място бяха авторите, към които имахме интерес и които искахме да покажем – автори, които са в изключително динамично обръщение днес. Темата се оформи в резултат от близкото запознаване с техните работи и това позволи експозицията да се изгради по един напълно естествен начин. преобладаващите природни мотиви и теми в изследваните произведения неизбежно ни насочиха към йохан волфганг фон гьоте и неговите проучвания в областта на връзката между природа и изкуство.

гьоте вижда природата и изкуството като два напълно противоположни полюса, като магнити, които силно се привличат, но между които няма опозиция. Той развива феноменологичния подход към естествената история, като алтернатива на природните науки по време на просвещението. отношението към човека като към статична единица, механичното възприемане на универса и линеарното развитие на науката довеждат до изключително рационалистичен подход. гьоте настоява върху взаимодействието между човек и природа. Смисълът трябва да се поражда от свързването на наблюдението и мисленето, чувстването, интуицията, въображението и вдъхновението. Механичната класификация не е достатъчна, за да се разбере естеството на природата. необходимо е мислене и концептуализиране; знанието е въпрос и на асоциации. гьоте предлага да има повече експерименти и хипотези, които след това да се проверяват в природата. наблюдението е естествената първа стъпка, но тъй като сетивата могат да достигнат само до външната форма, изследването на обекта изисква включване на интуицията, която го изучава с „очите на ума“. ученикът на гьоте и редактор на книгите му Рудолф Щайнер прилага методологията на гьоте за един жив подход към природата в пърформативните и изящните изкуства. Това дава възможност и на последните да отидат отвъд външната форма на нещата (natura naturata) и да опознаят вътрешната си природа (natura naturans1).

The exhibition falls in line with Structura gallery’ policy, to exhibit successful models of contemporary artists. The artists of the show – Alicja Kwade, Annette Kelm, Florian Meisenberg, Jorinde Voigt, Michael Sailstorfer, Norbert Bisky, and Olaf Nicolai, have already built up remarkable biographies and formidable careers, in both major international forums and the art market. This meeting is important to us for the purpose of a shared experience in conceptual and aesthetic quests, as well as for understanding the mechanisms and functionality of the art world.

The exhibition was not created based on a pre-defined theme. The primary consideration was the artists we wanted to showcase, which are at the center of a dynamic turning point, in the topical art conversation. The theme came together as a result of a close acquaintance with the works, which allowed for the exposure to be conceived in a completely organic manner. The prevailing natural motifs and themes within the works, inevitably directed us to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and his research on the relationship between nature and art.

Goethe sees nature and art as two completely opposite poles, like magnets that are heavily drawn to one another, but with no opposition. He developed the phenomenological approach towards a natural history, as an alternative to natural sciences during the Enlightenment. The approach to man as a static unit, the mechanical perception of the universe and the linear development of science, led to an extremely rationalistic approach. Goethe insists on the interaction between man and nature. The meaning must come from connecting observation and thinking, feeling, intuition, imagination and inspiration. Mechanical classification is not enough to comprehend the nature of nature. Thought and conceptualization are needed; knowledge is also a question of associations. Goethe suggests that there are more experiments and hypotheses that can be conducted in nature. Observation is the first natural step but since the senses can only reach the outer form, object study requires the inclusion of intuition, which studies with the “eyes of the mind”. Goethe’s student and book editor, Rudolf Steiner applies Goethe’s methodology, resulting in a lively approach to Nature in performance and fine arts. This allows the latter to go beyond (natura naturata) and to get to know their nature (natura naturans1).

в едно свое интервю алисия кваде казва: „опитвам се да видя каква е структурата на реалността. ние всички живеем върху топка, която лети наоколо. Това е откачено. представяйки си това, всичко изглежда възможно. Така или иначе не можем да го разберем. ние сме обикновени животни, мозъците ни са прекалено малки. опитвайки се да проумеем ситуацията, в която всички се намираме, е просто невероятно.“2 Тя работи с различни материали, като често създава илюзионистични ситуации и така поставя под съмнение възприятията ни и знанието ни за форма, размер, разстояние, време, гравитация.

анете келм идва от дюселдорфската фотографска школа, създадена от Берндт и Хила Бекер, кандида Хофер и Томас Руф. често тя снима съвсем обикновени обекти, като ги поставя в необичайна среда и така изпитва тяхната конвенционалност, простота и неатрактивност. не случайно обича да работи в традиционните жанрове на пейзажа, натюрморта и портрета. изображенията й се отличават с кристална яснота, която подчертава тяхната откъснатост от обичайния им контекст и им придава нови значения.

йоринде фойгт се изявява предимно в областта на рисунката, като превръща природните форми в психологически феномени. Работата й е подчинена на строги правила, понякога прилича на алгоритъм, но самата авторка споделя, че половината решения взима спонтанно в процеса на създаване3. започва като фотографка, но продължава с рисуване, защото това й дава по-голяма възможност да стигне до същината на нещата. нейните изключително педантични рисунки често приличат на диаграми, но са свързани със заобикалящия ни природен свят в опит той да бъде разгадан чрез проникване до сърцевината на конструкцията му.

Михаел зайлщорфер създава скулптури, инсталации, фотографии, видео, живопис, пърформанси. най-известен е със своите огромни движещи се съоръжения, често с неочакван и непредвидим за зрителите ефект. Машините вървят ръка за ръка с различни природни елементи в понякога странни противопоставяния. в „антиесен“ той систематично събира, боядисва и връща на мястото им падналите есенни листа, за да симулира ранно пролетно събуждане. в тази абсурдна, но и поетична работа художникът разглежда взаимоотношенията ни с природата от много различни ъгли.

норберт Биски e живописец и един от най-интересните представители на своето поколение. Тематично неговата работа се върти около сексуалността, катастрофални сценарии и унищожение. фрагменти от човешки тела и фигурални елементи се разпръскват в абстрактни пространства и форми, а меките пастелни нюанси се сблъскват с дръзки, живи цветове. неговите акварели, от друга страна, изглеждат игриви, леки и прозрачни. често пъти групи от мъжки голи тела са разположени пред абстрактни форми, които предизвикват асоциации за плажове и морски бряг, създавайки героична идилия. начинът, по който борави с пейзажа и фигурите, го поставя в рамките на европейската традиция. Сюжетите обаче свързват в едно примери от историята на изкуството, християнската иконография, гей културата и порнографията в апокалиптично природно избухване.

в работите си флориан Майзенберг адресира изкуствеността на днешното време, като комбинира аналоговото и дигиталното, а също така свързва съвременните икони с множество културни, религиозни и исторически референции. в показаното тук видео той използва за названието му цитат от романа на достоевски „престъпление и наказание“. Така силният визуален образ се насища и с дълбока символика.

олаф николай е сред най-разпознаваемите германски концептуални художници. Той постоянно изследва връзката между идея и образ, като така ни провокира да променим собствения си поглед към нещата. използва различни изразни средства: фотография, скулптура, дизайн, инсталация, пърформанс, но винаги цели да предизвика критически диалог със съвременния индустриализиран свят и да породи културни, социални и икономически референции. неговата серия „дъги…“, 2017, представя класическо взаимодействие между текст и образ, и показва как текстът променя възприятието на изображението и на традиционните представи за един или друг обект.

изложбата представя различни гледни точки към заобикалящия ни свят, но и се опитва да разшири разбирането за смисъла на съвременното изкуство. в края на краищата, както казва гьоте: „шедьоврите са произведени от човека в съответствие със същите истински и естествени закони, както и шедьоврите на природата“ (гьоте 1961-3, 11: 435-6).

In one of her interviews, Alicja Kwade said, “I’m trying to see what could be the structure of reality. I mean, we’re living on a ball that’s flying around. That’s crazy. Imagining that, everything is kind of possible. Because we can’t understand it anyway. We’re just animals, our brains are too small. Trying to understand the situation we’re all in is kind of incredible.”2 She works with different materials, often creating illusory situations and thus casts doubt on our perceptions and knowledge of form, size, distance, time and gravity.

Annette Kelm comes from the Düsseldorf School of Photography, established by Berndt and Hila Becker, Candida Hofer and Thomas Ruf. She often shoots ordinary objects, situating them in an unusual environment and by doing so, examining their conventionality, simplicity and unattractiveness. Not by chance, she likes to work in traditional genres of landscapes, still-lifes and the portraiture. Her images are distinguished by their crystal clarity, which emphasizes their detachment from their usual context and gives them new meanings.

Jorinde Voigt mainly works in the drawing medium to transform natural forms into psychological phenomena. In her works, subjects adhere to strict rules, sometimes resembling algorithms, but the artist herself shares that half of her decisions are made spontaneously during the creative process3. She started off as a photographer but continued with painting because it allowed for greater freedom to get to the bottom of things. Her extremely meticulous drawings often resemble diagrams but are linked to our surrounding natural world in an attempt to unravel it, by penetrating to the core of its construction.

Michael Sailstorfer creates sculptures, installations, photographs, video works, paintings and performances. He is best known for his huge moving facilities and often unexpected and unpredictable effects for viewers. Machines go hand in hand with various natural elements in often, strange opposition. In Antiherbst he systematically collects fallen autumn leaves, then dyes them and returns them back to their place, to simulate early spring awakening. In this absurd but also poetic work, the artist looks at our relationship with nature from many different angles.

Norbert Bisky is a painter and one of the most interesting representatives of his generation. Thematically, his work revolves around sexuality, catastrophic scenarios and destruction. Fragments of human bodies and figurative elements are scattered in abstract spaces and forms, while soft pastel shades collide with daring, vibrant colours. His watercolours, on the other hand, look playful, light and transparent. Often times groups of nude male figures are placed in front of abstract shapes that cause associations with beaches and seashores, creating heroic idyll. The way he handles landscapes and figures, places him within the frame of the European tradition. However, the plots link to examples from art history, Christian iconography, gay culture and pornography, in an apocalyptic natural outburst.

In his works, Florian Maisenberg addresses the artificiality of today by combining analogue and digital, as well as connecting modern icons with many cultural, religious and historical references. In the video shown here, he uses a quote from his name Dostoevsky’s novel Crime and Punishment, so that the strong visual image is saturated with deep symbolism.

Olaf Nicolai is among the most recognized conceptual German artists. He has continuously been exploring the relationship between the image and the idea, thus provoking us to shift our own perspective on issues. He works in a variety of mediums: photography, sculpture, design, installation and performance, always aiming to provoke a critical dialogue with the modern industrialized world, as well as to generate cultural, social and economic references. His series Rainbows ..., 2017, presents a classical interaction between text and image, showing how text can change the perception of an image and the traditional notions of objects.

The exhibition presents different viewpoints of the surrounding world but also tries to expand the understanding and meaning of modern art. After all, as Goethe says, “masterpieces were produced by man in accordance with the same true and natural laws as the masterpieces of nature” (Goethe 1961-3, 11: 435–6).
