Rising First GradersYou’ve learned so much in school this year! It is important that you keep your brain active over the summer to be ready for next year. In this packet, you will find a calendar of activities to last you all summer long. This year we have also incorporated a Summer Project for the final two weeks of summer vacation. Once you have completed an activity, have a family member initial in the box on the calendar. Create a journal that you can use to note your thoughts, ideas, and any work you complete. Be sure to enter the date in your journal for each assignment you do.
Directions: Families should preview the calendar together. There are some activities that may require advanced
planning, or you may want to consider working together with other families and friends on some activities. Students should read for at least 30 minutes each day.
Students will need a Reader’s and Writer’s Journal to complete the summer work. Your journal will be your special place for the daily calendar work and writing. They can purchase one, or they can make a journal by stapling several pieces of paper together or by using a notebook/binder with paper. Students should be creative and decorate the journal. Specific journaling tasks are given some days, but students may also journal after each day’s reading, noting things that stood out, questions that they have, or general wonderings about the text.
Each journal entry should: Have the date and assignment title. Have a clear and complete answer that explains the student’s thinking and fully supports the response. Be neat and organized.
Use the chart on the last page of this packet to record all of the books read during summer vacation.
Don’t forget to bring your Reader’s and Writer’s Journal and Summer Project with you on the first day of school. Your new teachers will be so proud of your summer adventure!

11Read a story with your mom or dad for 15 minutes. Then, read it to them like a storyteller.
12Ask you mom or dad to scramble the story of Humpty-Dumpty. Then, ask them to help you put it in the right order.
13Who is your favorite hero? Write about him or her in your journal.
14Make a word journal to put the new words you’ll learn this summer

15Rhyming words have the same ending sound (For example. go-no). Make a list of rhyming words and add them to your word journal. Can you think of words that will rhyme with looks, ten, hats, man?

17Pay a visit to your local public library and apply for a library card. Also, pick up a copy of the Summer Reading List and check out a recommended book.

19How would you help the character in the story? Write a sentence and illustrate what you would do.

2Read a poem out loud. First read it slowly in parts with a family member and then read it again. Can you read it on your own?
3Read another poem. As you read, visualize by making pictures in your mind of what is happening.What do you see?
4Write your own poem. Illustrate your poem. Share it with a friend or family member.
5Poems often relate to our five senses: sight, hearing, taste, touch, and smell. Review the poems that you read. Find words that relate to at least three of your senses. Here is an example:

6Find three interesting words in a magazine or newspaper. Highlight, circle, or cut and paste the words in your journal. Talk about the words. Write a sentence using the words in your journal.

Read Sid and Sam by Nola Buck or another book on the recommended book list.
9Reread the silly story. Take turns reading it aloud with a family member. Listen to how your family member uses expressions while reading. Practice!

11Create your own silly story. A duck riding a bike is silly. What other silly things can you think of an animal doing? Use your imagination. Draw a picture of the characters in your story.

17Would you recommend the book you read from the summer reading list to a friend? What did the author do to make this book interesting?
18In your journal, make a list of topics that you are interested in learning more about. Share your list with your family. Find books on these topics when you visit the library.
19Play the secret word with a family member. Use these words: fishing, swimming, camp, and family. Start with the first word and give clues about the meaning of words and see if your partner can guess the word. Example: I have lots of sand. People like to swim. People make castles. What am I? Answer: the beach!

25Write about your dream vacation. Where would you go? Why would you go there? Tell what it looks like and who would go with you.

August 13* This is a family project, so be sure to ask your parents to help you.Today you will begin your summer project.
Your project is to make a “Meet My Neighbor” poster. The poster will be about the jobs that Marc Crabtree talks about in the Meet My Neighbor books that you got from the library.
Just like this picture, your poster will tell the name of the job that the book you selected explains.
August 14Ask an older sister or brother to help you while you read your Meet My Neighbor book. Read it three times with their help, and then practice reading it by yourself.
August 15Today, you read your book to your sister or brother. They will be happy to see how well you can read.
When you finish reading, ask them to help you answer these important questions and write the answers in your journal.

Tools are the things a person uses to do their job. If your poster were about a baker, then the tools they use would be a spoon, bowl, apron, and an oven.

Draw a picture of your neighbor and his job. If they wear a uniform, be sure to draw them wearing it. A uniform is the special clothing that a person puts on to do their job. Remember to add the tools that you wrote about in your journal yesterday, and their names.
August 17Ask an adult to help you search the internet to find out more about your neighbor’s job.Write your new facts in your journal.
