Tygerberg Zoopark has plenty ofnew additions this spring after many of the animals gave birth to tiny, fluffy replicas of themselves. To findout what twoyearold twins, Zachand Wim Vorster are admiring here,go to page 2. Photo: Andr Bakkes
Driver targets cyclistANDR BAKKES
He remembers sliding on the tarand connecting viciously withthe curb, and then in his adrena-line-fuelled daze, he saw thedriver of the midnight blue FordFocus smirking and showinghim the middle finger.
Kraaifonteins Chad Fisher (16)had to undergo brain surgery afterthe intentional collision and will
most likely suffer medical after-ef-fects for the rest of his life.
The unidentified and cowardlydriver of the Ford Focus is nowhereto be found.TygerBurger spoke to the recov-
ering Fisher at his home on Mon-day, almost 20 days after the acci-dent.
I want to know why he did it,says a pensive Fisher.
Does he know me from some-where or did I do something to
him?Saturday, 5 November, will live
with him forever. He was riding on a friends bicy-
cle at 07:00 in Central Road inNorthpine when he stopped.
A car pulled up next to me andsaid I can go before him, but I didntmove immediately.
The man in the car then askedme whether I was going to go to-day, he says.
According to Fisher the driver of
the car could have gone, since therewasnt a stop sign for either of them.
When he didnt move quicklyenough, the driver of the Ford Fo-cus swore at Fisher.
He proceeded to cycle over thecrossing, but then he heard the carrevving and the next thing he knewhe was skidding over the road onhis shoulder and then he hit thecurb with his head.
I saw him driving away with asmile, he continues.
Fisher is upset that he didnt takethe registration number of the vehi-cle.
He had a light complexion, shortspiky hair and a little bit of facialhair. Thats all we know at thisstage.
Kraaifontein Police are now in-vestigatinga caseof attemptedmur-der, but to date no witnesses havebeen identified and the informationthey have is not sufficient.. To page 3.

Zoo chorus, lets fall in loveANDR BAKKES
Birds do it.
Bees do it.Even chimpanzees do it.It is, therefore, no surprise to
discover that there are plenty ofnew mouths and beaks to feed atthe only zoo in Cape Town theTygerberg Zoopark.
Theres even a baby stork. They come back here to nest
every year, says long-time own-er Lorraine Spence. She admiresthe mother stork sitting comfort-ably on top of one of the cageswhile protecting her newborn.
The stork looks smugly at twoof the seven billion humans.
One can almost hear it say, Ijust deliver the babies. Dontshoot the messenger.
Spence continues, A Germanzoo came here to put transmit-ters on some of the storks. Oneended up in Rwanda and wassent to the police for being a spy!As far as we know its stillthere.
When asked if she agrees withpeople who say animals shouldbe in the wild as opposed to cagesin a zoo, she responds: Yes, I doagree, but most will never sur-vive out there. They say within10 years chimps will be extinct in
the wild. The animals get plenty of food
and water, but there isnt toomuch in the line of entertain-ment.
Or is there? Some throw sand at onlookers,
while others swing from one sideof the cage to the other and thenback again. Copulation is anoth-er favourite pastime of theirs.
While at the zoo, a bald ibisand the love of his life were per-forming a mating dance just toemphasise this point.
This is breeding season andbabies are popping out all overthe place. Im very excited, be-cause my birchill zebra is preg-nant. Hopefully it will be aChristmas baby, she smiles.
New additions include spring-bucks, a rare dark-handed gib-bon, patas monkeys, a chimp, anyala, a bush buck, tortoises andplenty of birds. It would perhaps
be easier to say that new addi-tions include just about everyhairy or scaly creature one canimagine.
Spence wishes some will get inon the act, but for some reasonor another they take pride intheir endangered label.
I dont know whats wrongwith these parrots. They justdont want to mate!
Spence feels the same wayabout Henry a grys buck. Hen-ry is currently more fascinatedin the dirt in front of him thanhis potential mate sitting glumlyin the corner.
Every animal can be adopt-ed for a minimal fee, and Spen-ce reckons this could be the per-fect Christmas present.
Imagine giving your dad a cer-tificate saying that thathe isnowthe proud owner of a majesticwhite lion or a weird-looking spi-der monkey!
Apart from naming rights, theperson will also know that theirfunds will ensure the white liongets to eat about 10 chickens aweek. It is disconcerting to hearthat not even one percent of thethousand plus animals in the zoohave been adopted.
Spence concludes by sayingthat the zoo will soon boast a pic-nic area.
Phone the zoo on 021 884 4494.

Dief slaan knorrendeop vlug, sonder helm
ANDR BAKKES
Speurkonstabel J.P. Groenewald staan hier met dieknortjor.
Attack effects will linger. From page 1.
Police spokesperson Captain GerhardNiemand says he believes there was a ver-bal exchange between the two, but he addsthat this doesnt give anyone the right tooverreact in such a manner.
We need information from anyone whosaw what happened, says Niemand.
Fisher passed out briefly while lying inthe road, but then another stranger broughthim home.
Fishers sister, Candice, saw her brothercovered in blood when he arrived, but nei-ther she nor Fisher thought it was serious.
She put bandages on him, but when hestarted complaining about tiredness shetook him to Kraaifontein Hospital. He waseventually transported to Tygerberg Hospi-tal and then only after the doctor recom-
mended a comprehensive scan did they re-alise that there was haemorrhaging on thebrain.
Fisher endured four hours of emergencybrain surgery on the Sunday. He had fourstitches above the eye and 27 stitches on hishead where they operated.
Says Candice: He will have epileptic fitsfor the rest of his life, have anxiety attacks,he will get confused, have a temper. He cansnap at any time. And then he will also lackconcentration.
Chad has had two seizures since the acci-dent, and when he got on a bicycle threeweeks later, he suffered from an anxiety at-tack.
Anyone who can help the police to makeheadway in this case are urged to contactKraaifontein Police on 021 980 5500.
Chad Fisher has made a remarkable recovery inless than a month after undergoing brain surgery, but the identity of the man who caused allthis is still a mystery. Here Chad is with his sister, Candice. Photo: Andr Bakkes

Warm hart vir slangeWhen the operator answers your call, plea-se state which service you need: police, am-bulance, fire brigade, s die elektroniesestem. Hallo, what is you emergency?
I dont know which service I need, I havea snake in my backyard, my name is Mara-na, s ek in een asemteug.
Ek hoor n onderdrukte giggel. Where areyou, mam? Ek s haar. Is itokay if I put you through to yourlocal police station? They will beable to assist you.
Die lyn gaan dood. Ek bel weer.Hierdie keer dink die man hytnie reg gehoor nie.
Gary antwoord besonder vinnig vir so laatop n Saterdagmiddag.
Gary s hys oor tien minute daar.
Jy sal sweerdie man was al voorheen hier.
Hy kyk my halfvraend aan.
Belowe.

A 26-year-old man from Wallacedene wasarrested when the Kraaifontein Policefound 103 bankies of tik in his house inGrootboom Street.
Spokesperson for the local police, CaptainGerhard Niemand, elaborates: On Satur-day, 12 November, at approximately 17:40 wereceived information of a house where drugswere being sold. We immediately went thereand followed procedures as prescribed in theDrug Act and searched the house and foundthe following: 103 bankies of tik, 28 lollies(tik pipes), 15 whole mandrax pills, two hal-ves of mandrax pills, eight quarters of man-drax pills and R170 in cash.
According to Niemand the good relations-hip between the community and the policeresults in count-less successes.
Meanwhile, four Somalian na-tionals were arre-sted last weekThursday by theWestern CapeFlying Squad forbeing in possessi-on of the drugkhat.
They were ap-parently on theirway to CapeTown when theauthorities disco-vered R60 000worth of khat.
According toWarrant OfficerNovember Filan-der, provincialpolice spokesper-son, information
from the public once again led to this suc-cess. The information came from the com-munity and it included the make and the re-gistration numbers of the vehicles. After themembers spotted the two vehicles theybrought it to a halt on the Maroela Road off-ramp on the N1.
He continues to say that they suspect thedrugs to come all the way from central Afri-ca. We have never caught anyone in theWestern Cape for growing Khat.
When asked about the relationshipbetween the authorities and the public, hesaid, It is very, very important. The policeare always visible, so suspects tend to spotus before we spot them.
He adds that even if one has just a suspici-on, it is always better to inform the police.
The four suspects appeared in theKuilsRi-ver Magistrates Court this week.
A proud bunch of Kraaifontein police members with the tik which wasconfiscated in Wallacedene.

Wie weet hoeveel geld hy al so gesteelhet?

Everyone must respect lawWe so easily get frustrated with the unlawfuldriving of taxi drivers, but I am noticing thatmore and more drivers are driving over theyellow line on the side of the road. Especiallyfrom Okovango Drive into Old Paarl Road inBrackenfell. Also the turn-off into Northpineis of particular importance. It might sound
petty, but can result in unnecessary acci-dents.
Our country is in desperate need of morerespectable and law abiding citizens.
Let us assist our traffic officers.CONCERNED DRIVEREmail
Unnerved by scamTuesday (15 November) at 13:30 I was drivingin Bellville on Durban Road in the directionof the N1 highway.
At a red robot, the driver of the vehicle be-hind me (a white commercial van with or-ange adverts across the top) got out of his carand approached my window saying that Ihad petrol leaking from the back of my car.
When the robot turned green I found a safeplace to pull over (at the bus stop still in Dur-ban Road) and he pulled behind me on thatbusy road, like a Good Samaritan who wasassisting me out of a fix.
I got out of my car and he inspected undermy car and said there was a definite leak andthat he would help me quickly signallingthat I should follow him.
When we both got into our respective cars,he overtook me and turned immediately leftat the approaching intersection assuming
that I would follow him. I ignored thisstranger and proceeded straight.
I went to the nearest petrol station just alittle stretch away and asked the petrol at-tendant to assist me in determining if I hada fuel leak under my car pointing at the exactlocation where the concerned driver hadpointed.
Two petrol attendants checked the bottomof my car and there were no leaks. This conartist was white, sounded Afrikaans and inhis mid-twenties.
This is a scam aimed at misleading womentravelling on their own. Had I accepted hisassistance, he probably would have dispos-sessed me of my vehicle, stolen my bag andjewellery and most likely harmed me.
It all happened very quickly!IDALIA ASHBYEmail

It might just be, that one day, our youth

Black Tuesdayfor SA?Nelson Mandela once said, A critical, in-dependent and investigative press is the li-feblood of any democracy. The press mustbe free from state interference. It must ha-ve the economic strength to stand up to theblandishments of government officials.
Almost 18 years after South Africa sho-wed the world that a peaceful transitionin government is attainable; we now facethe distinct possibility of sliding back intoobscurity, if the Protection of InformationBill is passed in parliament.
The health of a democracy is often meas-ured by restrictions on media.
The days of rotting in jail for upholdingone of our most basic rights the right toknow could become a reality once again.
Since 1994, information deemed to be inthepublic interestwerepublishedwithoutfear of persecution. Countless examples ofthis freedom permeated the press and con-tributed to numerous restless nights forthose corrupted by power. Now we are atthe crossroads. The significance of thisbill cannot be overemphasised. A freepress has played an invaluable role inbringing untouchable citizens to justice Shabir Shaik, Jackie Selebi, Bheki Cele,Gwen Mahlangu-Nkabinde.
When sensitive information was leakedin the Apartheid years, the informant andthe journalist or editor could well end upin jail, yet despite this restriction, somecontinued to defy this evil.
In that period the country was rocked bya major political scandal involving the de-partment of information, which was alle-gedly misappropriating State funds for se-cret projects.
A taste of freedom has left us yearningfor more. Or in Madibas words, Let free-dom reign. The sun never set on so glori-ous a human achievement.

MARANA BRAND VAN HULSTEYN
Thirty four children with cleft lips andpalates have just received the gift of smil-ing. They underwent life-changing facialreconstructive surgery from 14 tot 18 No-vember at Tygerberg Hospital as part ofSmile Week.
The hospital, Vodacom and the SmileFoundation joined forces to make this initia-tive possible. Smile Foundation is an NGOthat does facial reconstructive surgery freeof charge for children from disadvantagedbackgrounds with facial conditions.Through its partnership with academic hos-pitals in the country, Smile Foundation hashelped about 800 children to date.
Not only children with cleft lips and pal-ates, but also children with ear conditions, some cranio-facial conditions, and burnwounds were operated on.
On Tuesday 15 November, Western Cape
Premier Helen Zille met the children whohad surgery, as well as their parents. Shewas joined by Western Cape Minister ofHealth Theuns Botha.
In her keynote address, Zille said the workdone by the Smile Foundation and Vodacomis a great example of how the private sectorcan assist government in delivering qualityhealthcare to citizens.
Around 80 percent of the health budget isspent on diseases and injuries that are pre-ventable and often a consequence of life-stylechoices.
This means we do not have enough mon-ey to provide care and assistance to peopleliving with disabilities.
The value that Smile Week will bring tothe lives of these children, who will be giventhe opportunity of a future with a higher self-esteem, a sense of dignity and most impor-tantly, full and joyous smiles, is truly im-measurable, she said.
Botha added to this, saying: I am so proudof this partnership whereour hospital staff, special-ists and nurses are joininghands with Vodacom to-wards a future generationof smiles.
This is a project thatcannot be bought withrands and cents but isborne out of compassionand goodwill.
Moira Gerszt, chief oper-ating officer of the SmileFoundation, says there isno better Christmaspresent than a life-chang-ing smile. We are excitedthat, through this partner-ship, we will be able toshare smiles with the chil-dren of the Western Cape.
Sharing a smile

Volgens Johan is dieudu-trom n tradisionele Nige-riese instrument. Die woordudu beteken letterlik waterpot.Mense vra my dikwels waaromdie trom so baie soos n blompotlyk, verduidelik Johan.

Calendar just in time for XmasDESIRE RORKE
The Uitsig Animal Rescue Centre launchedits 2012 calendar just in time for Christmas.
The first of its kind for this organisation, thisglossy calendardepicts theworkof the organisa-tion, with 14 brilliantly composed pictures ofsome of the rescued animals it houses.
The idea was hatched in October 2010 whenphotographer Andrew Waltman heard of the or-ganisation and joined as a volunteer.
The rest as they say, is history.Assisted by his niece Tracy Waltman, they set
off on a seven-month adventure in January 2011,to capture the spirit of these animals on film.
We shot on two locations, the Uitsig farm andbeach, and spent literally hours on one photo,to get that perfect shot, Waltman says.
In the end there were hundreds of photos topick from, and according to founder HeidiSwart, this was the most challenging part of theproject.
We eventually put all the photos to vote andthe staff and volunteers at Uitsig chose the 14pictures that appear in the final product, shesays.
The calendars were then printed by Associat-ed Printers under the watchful eye of projectmanager Di Fraser.
At the official launch at Hok 11 on Saturdayevening, Heidi thanked everybody who was partof the project.
It took many capable hands to make such awork of art, she said.
The calendar, which makes an awsome gift, will go on sale at pet shops and vet practices aswell as the Uitsig website for R100 a piece.

Most localschools arebursting atthe seamsWith only three weeks left before the endof the school year, schools in Bracken-fell, Durbanville, Delft and Kuils Riverare full to capacity.
The Western Cape Education Departmentis wrapping up its preparations for the 2012school year, which includes the finalisationof enrolments.
Says Bronagh Casey, spokesperson for ed-ucation minister Donald Grant: The com-pletion of enrolments for the followingschool year is imperative, as this deter-mines the number of staff that will be allo-cated to the particular school, the amountof furniture and stationery required and thenumber of learning materials such as text-books.
According to her, this years early enrol-ment campaign has been a success, withhigh enrolment figures being capturedthroughout the province.
The greatest demand for enrolment hasbeen in the metro region, with some areasreporting that they are full to capacity, shesays.
While enrolment has been high in theEden/Karoo, Overberg and West Coast dis-tricts, there is still capacity in some of theschools.
We are expecting around 100 000 learnersto qualify for enrolment in Grade 1 nextyear, and approximately 80 000 in Grade 8.
Bronagh says the department does expectsome late enrolments next year, especiallyinvolving learners that have migrated fromother provinces or have enrolled late forpractical reasons, such as family reloca-tions.
We have identified areas where theremight be high levels of demand. These in-clude Mitchells Plain, Nyanga, Phillipi,Delft, Kuils River, Langa, Hanover Park,Manenberg and Oudtshoorn, she says.
According to Bronagh there are still par-ents in the province who have children en-tering Grade 1 or Grade 8, but who have notyet enrolled them for 2012 .
I strongly urge them to do so now. Giventhat many of our schools are already full, en-rolment at this stage may require some as-sistance by the WCED district offices.
Parents must not leave enrolment to thefirst day of the new school year.
This places a massive amount of pres-sure on our officials and distracts ourschools from their task at hand which isan on-time start to teaching and learning.
It is simply unfair for parents who havefailed in their responsibility to enrol theirchildren in good time to lay the blame on thedepartment and its officials at the start ofthe new school year.
Parents need to provide the following doc-uments when submitting their applications:birth certificate; immunisation card; trans-fer card or the last report card for learnerswho have already been to school.
