Residents to complete City surveyAt the meeting, he urged residents to com-plete a survey from the City of Cape Townwhich aims to determine the needs of thecommunity and how they perceive the im-pact of a possible change of zoning in the ar-ea.

“In a recent private survey, 81% of the res-idents who participated indicated that theywanted JBV to remain a rural area,” hesaid.

He added that the majority of these re-spondents have invested into their homesand properties over periods as long as 20and 30 years.

“The critical issue is whether the rights

of these residents will be taken into accountwith the ensuing City planning and howheavy these rights will weigh against theCity’s objectives with regard to industrialdevelopment.”

‘Are you prepared to fight?’In light of this, Gale posed the question:

“Are you prepared to fight for it, and howdeep will you reach into your pockets to en-gage in a legal process?”

Issues to be dealt with by the forum willinclude any future rezoning applications aswell as the question of where the new roadwill be built.

André Brand who has lived in JBV for

three decades, said that a four lane high-way would be “senseless” and that there aremany other alternatives the City shouldconsider.

George Sihera, chairman of the Durbvan-ville Forum suggested that the new forumconducts an independent traffic assessmentrather than trusting the traffic assessmentthat will be made by the City.

The interim committee elected were: Ri-chard Anderson, Andre Brandt, Piet Stem-met, Jacques le Roux, Dave Gale, Tim Stock-hall, Karin van Zyl, and Adele Borman.

Malan, Stellenberg, Tygerberg enBellville mee.

Malandie gasheerskool is.

Family dog shot dead by airgunESMÉ ERASMUS

@erasmusesme

A family dog was killed, in the back-yard while the family was inside thehouse, unaware of what was taking

place. The family from Aurora is still shocked

at finding their dog dead in the yard of theirhouse in High Street on Sunday afternoon.

Raqual van Wyk wrote on Facebook lastweek that they had just returned home af-ter celebrating her husband’s birthday at15:00.

“We opened the doors, to let the kids andmy dog, Zack have a run outside while wesettled in. The kids came in to watch TVwith us, but we left Zack outside as we hadhad him indoors the whole morning whilewe were out. He was running around, chas-ing the pigeons; barking at the kids walk-ing by, being a normal dog.”

Complaint about barking“My husband got up to tell him to settle

down, andashe just sat backdownweheardthe most horrific howl. Thinking that hehad hurt himself somehow we all came run-ning to see him.“My husband got to him first and screamedthat I must keep the kids away. Seeing thelook of panic on my husband’s face as he

tried to get the door open, and looking downat the fear in my five-year-old’s eyes issomething I will never forget,” she recalled.

Van Wyk told TygerBurger that Zack waslikeamemberof the family.TheBorderCol-lie Labrador cross entered their lives as apuppy when they got him at an adopt-a-petday at Stodels as a birthday gift for theirson. According to Raqual, about four

months ago, a neighbour complainedabout the dog barking. Then, about twomonthsago, they receiveda letter fromthemunicipality that they must do somethingabout the barking or they will be fined.“We asked many of our neighbours if ourdog is bothering them, but they did nothave a problem,” she said.

Licence requiredAfter that, they kept Zack inside the

house about 90% of the time, she said. After an autopsy was performed at Ty-

gerberg Animal Hospital, an air gun pelletwas found in the dog’s heart.“Our chil-dren were only metres away in the housewhen Zack was shot,”she says. “My hus-band and parents had to soothe my boywhile Zack asphyxiated in his own blood. It was gruesome and traumatic,” she said.

Col Marius Swanepoel said the bulletmust still go for ballistic tests to ascertainwhich firearm was used, but that it looks

like a bullet from an air gun. “People do notneed a licence for an air gun,” he warned.Charges of malicious damage to propertyand firing a firearm in a residential area isbeing investigated. In the meantime the sto-ry has spread like wildfire on social media,Raqual said. One Facebook user even of-fered a R500 reward for any informationlinked to the incident.

Volgens Cecilia Hume, digitale redakteurvan TygerBurger, besef mense nie altyd hoedoeltreffend sosiale media werklik is nie.

The fun-filled family event has become atradition at the Bracken Nature Reserve andis held with the support of the Friends ofBracken. Outdoor enthusiasts will also betaken on a walk to view the Protea scollymo-cephala, which was only discovered in Junethis year. The protea was recorded in thenorth-western part of the reserve, where theold landfill site was in operation for 30 years.

“After its closure, the landfill site was re-habilitated and hydro-seeded. The threehealthy protea individuals are a result of thehydro-seeding,” says Van der Merwe. This isa wonderful opportunity for residents andoutdoor enthusiasts to celebrate our rich nat-ural heritage on Heritage Day and he urgesresidents to take part in conservation initia-

tives. The reserve is currently covered in abeautiful blanket of Dimorphotheca pluvia-lis, commonly referred to as Cape daisies.“While enjoying the beauty of the reserve, visitors may encounter some of our wildlife, including Cape grysbok, steppe buzzard andour resident jackal buzzard. Every so often, the sound of the Cape rain frog can also beheard,” added Van der Merwe.

Sometimes the little things in life canbring about the biggest change.

This was demonstrated when twosocial work students at the University ofStellenbosch, Lauren Aron and Maria An-nandale planted a vegetable garden in animpoverished local settlement.

This project formed part of their thirdyear studies suggested to them by the NPOBadisa in Kraaifontein.

Not many people are aware of the smallinformal settlement of Mosselbank on theoutskirts of Bonnie Brook in Kraaifontein, yet around 400 people have called this smallportion of land home for almost 50 years.

Although the exact history of the infor-mal settlement is not recorded, some of theoldest residents say the community had itsroots in the former missionary station atthe old Moravian church still situated inBonnie Brook.

According to Lauren and Maria, whoboth hail from Stellenbosch, the Mossel-bank land is today owned by various own-ers who sub-let it to the families.

Maria says up to eight people live in oneshack and running water can only be ac-cessed from a few central taps. “The onlysanitation is a pit latrine and bucket latrinesystem,” she says.

“When we first arrived here we had to doa needs assessment. There were so manyneeds, but after talking to the communitymembers, we finally decided on a sustaina-ble vegetable garden.”

The students felt that the project wouldnot only supply the community with con-tinued nourishment but will also give themas student social workers an opportunity toengage with members of the community.

As the first sod was turned in March thisyear, Lauren swiftly establishedadrug sup-port group among the youth, while Mariastarted a parenting skills group with themothers.

“It quickly became apparent that most ofthese youngsters landed in the clutches ofaddiction due to boredom.

“Many of them don’t go to school andhave nothing constructive to do and noth-ing to work for or strive for,” says Lauren.

But as work started on the garden, com-munity members joined in and after thefirst seeds were planted in October, men, women and children were all activelyinvolved in the garden by means of a workroster.

“By working together, relationships andmorale in the community was strength-ened,” said Maria. The students believethat the changes the garden has set in mo-tion will only gain momentum as time goesby.

Community member Felicity Louwagrees.“It has been wonderful how we as aa community worked together for the goodof all of us. While work was going on, no-body fought with each other and we are allpositive about this garden and what itmeans to us.

“Even the youngsters stopped smokingtik on the days they had to work and someof them are now wanting to change theirlives,” she told TygerBurger.

Although the two have now completedtheir project, the community is only start-ing with theirs.

The women in Mosselbank, plan to starta local soup kitchen as soon as the first cropis harvested and also plan to sell some ofthe vegetables to buy new seeds.

“We are planning to extend the gardensto otherareas in the settlement so it can sus-tain everybody during the hungry wintermonthswhen themendon’t have jobs,” saidLouw.

For Maria and Lauren it was a job welldone, with many lessons learnt.

“It has been a great journey for both ofus and all the members of the Mosselbankcommunity,” they said.

“It was rewarding to see hard work payoff.”

Staan terug,Bill Gates!

2. Jou album en loopbaan doen sogoed. Waaraan skryf jy jou sukses toe?

Dit is eienaardig, maar ek het nog nooitaan my sangloopbaan as ’n sukses-gemoti-veerde loopbaan gedink nie; dit is iets wataltyd deel was en deel sal bly van my omliedjies te skryf. Ek glo solank ’n mens altydnuwe werk skep en dit altyd ’n passie salbly, sal mens altyd kan groei in jou kuns.”

Alles was net vir my en Marionsnaaks!”

5. Jou kinders hou jou besig.

@dezzierorke

At the crack of dawn while the morningmist still lies thick on the ground, thefirst riders arrive to groom their hor-

ses. The stables become a hive of activity asriding boots are polished, horses brushedand manes plaited.

The riders emerge dressed in their crispwhite jodhpurs, smart red and black ridingjackets and black velvet equestrian caps tosaddle up. This is a pageant of custom.

Ten minutes later the hunting horn sig-nals and the huntsman bellows out: “Gatherround, gather round!” The horses whinnyas the hounds start to howl in anticipation. The hunt is about to begin.

You will be forgiven for thinking that thisdescribes the start of fox-hunting season inBritain at the turn of the 19th century. Whenin actual fact, TygerBurger joined a modern-day ‘fox hunt’ on the plains of Joostenberg-vlakte on Sunday.

It was the second last hunt of the seasonand members of the Cape Hunt Club, turnedup in their numbers at the Just HorsesEquestrian Centre to participate in this ageold sport.

No foxes, just urineThe Cape Hunt Club is the oldest hunting

club outside of England today, following along tradition of riding to hounds in the Ca-pe. “The club was established in 1822 by thenCape governor Lord Charles Somerset, whoimported the first foxhounds to the count-ry,” says club member Colleen Laubsher.

Drag-hunting is an exhilarating, non-com-petitive, cross-country, equestrian sport inwhich riders follow foxhounds trained to fol-low a laid trail of scent. The course is riddenat a canter or a gallop and usually includesnumerous jumps and some natural hazardssuch as river crossings. Colleen outlined

how the drag-hunt is practised today. “Inmodern times foxes aren’t hunted anymoreand we use what is called a drag – a clothscented with jackal urine,” she explains.

“The drag is pulled by the dragsman whorides out with the drag on a rope, four minu-tes before the hunt starts. The huntsmanwho is in chargeof thehounds, will then ‘lay’the hounds on the scent and the hunt is onits way, with the huntmaster leading the ri-ders.” The trail of about 10 km is laid out insix sections for riders and hounds to takerests in between. Before the start, each riderquickly swallows down the traditional stir-rup cup (usually some whisky or liqueur)while the dragsman started the ride out withthe drag. Then, exactly four minutes later, the horn is sounded out again, signalling thestart of the hunt. The hounds are on theirway, while thrilled spectators are driven outahead in off-road vehicles to get a good van-

tage point of the hunt. On a hillside near theend of the first leg, the vehicles come a stopand the spectators wait in exhilarated exci-tement for the hounds and the first riders tocome around the corner.

Their patience is soon rewarded when aminute later the pack charges around thecorner with 21 riders on horseback hot ontheir heels. The adrenalin is palpable.

Holly Miller (15) form Edgemead has parti-cipated in four hunts and describes why sheloves this sport so much.“It is all about vibe! The hounds, the fast ride, the clothing andthe entire tradition of the day,” she says.

At the halfway point, organisers quicklyerect a table to serve champagne, orange jui-ce and snacks to rejuvenate the riders for therest of the hunt. Then they are off again inthe same order, dragsman, hounds, hunt-master and hunters.

The hounds are bred for their strong hun-

ting instincts, abundant energy and keensense of smell. It is fascinating to watchthem follow the scent, and even when theylose it for a few seconds it is soon picked upagain, despite the drag being kilometresahead of them and out of sight.

Always a challengeColleen explains how the hounds are trai-

ned for hunting.“At the age of five months we start taking

them on walks and at eight months they arecoupled with an older hound. So they essen-tially teach each other to hunt,” she says.

“As they grow older they are often takenon exercise outrides with horses to becomefit,” she says.

On the last stretch, hounds and horsesstop at a small farm dam for a quick dip inthe cool water, before galloping the last fewkilometres to the end.

“It doesn’t matter how many hunts you ha-ve done, it always remains challenging andtherein lies the adrenalin rush,” says riderSonet Geyer.

“It is a very fast paced gallop and you haveto concentrate all the time. You have to crossrivers and ditches on terrain where 4x4sdon’t even go and although the hounds leadthe way, you as a rider still have to be in fullcontrol of your horse and react quickly inany situation,” she says.

Back at the stable, the final horn announ-ces the end of the hunt and the horses, hounds and riders, now all sweaty and dirty, head for the big dam to frolic in the water-another successful hunt under their belts.

The sport only mimics the traditional Bri-tish fox hunt, which in its original form, dueto cruelty towards animals, has been bannedin the United Kingdom over a decade ago.But one thing remains the same today - devi-lishly good fun.V For more information contact Shirley Muller on 082823 6563 or Vere Allan on 083 656 8661.

Riders and horses cool off before they take on the last leg of the hunt.

One often reads and hearsabout motorcyclists’ involve-ment in road accidents – moreoften than not, the cause of theaccident is placed at the feet ofthe other road user.

While sitting in peak hourtraffic on a national road lastweek, I was really annoyed atthe number of bikers zig-zag-ging their way through thegridlocked traffic.

With my senses on highalert, I noticed most motorcy-clists would either speed pastvehicles in the gap betweenlanes, or manoeuvre their waythrough the traffic to get to thefront. They also seem to forcetheir way into turning lanes atrobots or stop-streets, withlittle or no regard for othermotorists.

Understandably, their chosenmode of transport allows themto skip the traffic which we, togreat frustration have toendure. A little respect whilemeandering through vehicleswould be appreciated.

The grand dame of the Cape Winelands, recent-ly underwent a richly deserved face-lift.

Since Lanzerac was founded in 1692, theestate has changed hands several times butmade its mark in 1961 with the release of theworld’s first commercially produced Pinota-ge. Two years earlier, the iconic LanzeracRosé in its famous tear-shaped bottle, sawthe light and quickly became a national fa-vourite. Today this wine is nothing short oflegendary.

During those years the estate experienceda golden era, with the sprawling green lawnsin front of the manor house becoming a hiveof activity over weekends when locals religi-ously visited the cellar. It was, and still is,an institution in the Stellenbosch wine regi-on.

“Lanzerac was one of the first farms inStellenbosch and part of the town’s culture.Old Maties students remember it very welland today’s students still visit us like theirparents used to,” says Zelda Furstenberg ofthe marketing team.

“Way back then you had your first date atLanzerac and today we still welcome manystudents to enjoy sundowners on our terracebefore their university dinner dances.”

The tradition lives on with the currentbuildings and facilities having been beauti-fully refurbished.

“We upgraded our facilities to satisfy theneeds of today’s guests. For example, whata bride needed 40 years ago is not the sameas what a bride needs today,” she says, witha twinkle. In January this year, a new delica-tessen was added to the list of offerings, which adjoins the recently remodelled andrenovated tasting room.

“Elegantly designed in oak and stone, thetasting room is an example of the higheststandards that Lanzerac prides itself in,”says Zelda. Here you can enjoy several winetasting options paired with either chocolate,

cheese or other delicacies. Adding to Lanze-rac’s old-world charm, are some employeeswho have worked there for generations.“The most famous and well-loved is Oom Ma-niewhohasbeenworking in theTaphuis, thehotel bar for 48 years now and has met andserved many famous guests like the Kenne-dys,” says Zelda. Just across from the Tap-huis you can step into the Craven Lounge, where above the cosy fireplace hangs an oilpainting of the legendary rugby administra-tor Doc Danie Craven and his dog Bliksem, who use to visit the farm every friday for‘meetings’.

The estate boasts three ranges of award-winning wines, with the exclusive HeritageRange consisting of three wines: The PionierPinotage 2011, Le Général 2011, a Cabernet-based blend, and Mrs English 2012, a limitedselection of the finest Chardonnay and PinotBlanc barrels of the particular vintage.

“Both the hotel and the wine is synony-mous with quality. Lanzerac is home to ma-ny and for generations a place where everyo-ne is welcome,” says Zelda.

TygerBurger’s digital editor recently gotmore than just her feet wet when thenewspaper was nominated to take part

in the #ALSIceBucketChallenge.TygerBurger was nominated by Prestige

Academy and Centurion Academy in Bel-lville on Wednesday, so Cecilia Hume tookone for the team the very next day.

The #ALSIceBucketChallenge is a globalinitiative aimed at promoting awarenessand generating funds for research for amyo-trophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) disease.

Participants are dared to film themselveshaving a bucket of iced water poured overtheir heads or forfeit by donating money toa local organisation that deals with ALS, amotor neurone disease (MND).

Although TygerBurger have taken thechallenge, the newspaper will also be mak-ing a monetary donation to The South Afri-can Motor Neurone Disease Association.

A worthy causeALS is a motor neuron disease (MND)

where the motor neurons, made up of mil-lions of nerve nuclei in the brainstem andspine, degenerate. This causes muscleweakness and stiffness as well as resistanceto movement and changes in reflexes. It canalso result in difficulty speaking, swallow-ing, and breathing.

Most people with MND are over the ageof 50, but it can also affect people in their20s or 30s. It usually presents itself in differ-ent ways depending on the groups of musclefibres that start degenerating, but oncediag-nosed; patients usually have a life expectan-cy of one to five years.

Although research is ongoing, there isstill no cure for MND, only treatments tohelp with symptoms.

TygerBurger nominated Radio Tyger-berg, Tyger Valley and CapeGate shopping

centres to take up the challenge. So braceyourself and spread awareness about ALS!

Jody Jason ‘JJ’Petersen andAshleigh Lubbevisited the Orange Couch to talkabout their band,Reposition.

Repositioning theworld of musicLOUISA STEYL

@lounotes

Reposition is all about changing thelives of the people around themthrough music.

Manager and multi instrumentalist, JodyJason “JJ” Petersen, describes the band asa group of young, like-minded musicians.

The band came together in 2010, when thefive, who were already serving together atHis People Church in Kuils River, decidedthat “Sundays weren’t enough” for them.

JJ and drummer Julian Maree played ajazz show together and soon thereafter, roped in Ashleigh Lubbe in to sing vocals forthem.Brothers Michael (keyboards andsynth) and Robin Thompson (bass) followedsoon afterwards.

Robin, an anthropology student, came upwith the name Reposition to reflect theband’s desire to reposition people back to aplace of good morals and values.

The band tries to put a positive messageacross, so that their good example will helpbring about positive change in the lives ofyoung children.

The band describes themselves as a “bandfor hire” or a “people’s band” and play what-ever their audience calls for, but they’ve alsorecently started writing their own music.

‘We’re a mixed marsala’“It’s basically jazz,” Ashleigh says, before

quickly adding that that’s not all they do.“We’re a mixed marsala kind of band,” shesays. There are also a lot of love songs intheir repertoire. “We love love,” she says.

The band has a passion for helping thecommunity.

Ashleigh points out that their communitysupports them and pushes them forward. Inthis way, Reposition helps organisations, communities and other bands grow whenev-er they can.

They recently opened a club in Stikland, calledSoul 6, as aplatform forupandcomingacts. “It’s hard for an artist in Cape Townto get work,” Ashleigh says, so they’ve

opened the club to create a platform for art-ists to perform.

They also give the artists a chance to per-form alongside bigger names, such as CanSkylark and Ashley Davids.

The shows are also a networking opportu-nity for artists.

“We need to help each other,” Ashleighsays.

The group’s dream is to develop Soul 6 intoa fullscale dinner theatre with an arts schoolon the side.

Giving back to the communityOutside of the club and performing togeth-

er at church, the group are also individuallyinvolved with music development.

Ashleigh is a vocal coach for the Depart-ment of Arts and Culture’s mass participa-tion, opportunity and access, developmentand growth (MOD) Programme.

Julian hosts drum clinics and Robin,Michael and JJ play for other communityprojects like Sounds of the Nations.

“We want to affect change,” JJ says. Whenthe band was founded, it was with the ideaof giving back.

“This is not about us at the end of the day,”he adds.

Reposition are also developing them-selves.

The band is starting to evolve by workingon writing their own songs with the eye onrecording in the near future.

“We love being busy,” Ashleigh says en-thusiastically and it’s just as well becausethe proposals are starting to come in for pri-vate shows as wedding season looms.

When they aren’t planning for weddingsor teaching, the group are also planning pos-sible tours across the country and to Na-mibia.V For more information about the band or Soul 6and to stay up to date with their shows, visit theirFacebook page, under Reposition Band, or followthem on twitter at @repositionband.V JJ and Ashleigh performed on of Reposition’s original songs on the Orange Couch. IFBB South African bodybuilding and fitness championships

Nurturing talent at cricket schoolCome January next year, one of the

most famous and picturesque cricketgrounds in the world will become

home to a high school. The Western Province Cricket Associa-

tion (WPCA), in partnership with Stone-fountain Colleges, announced the openingof Newlands Cricket High School lastweek.

Shaheed Shaik, the founder and directorof the new school, says the school willbroaden the platform for talented cricketplayers, so that more players of value canproceed through the local cricketing sys-tem. “There are currently four very promi-nent cricket schools in town, but disadvan-taged players cannot afford to attend theseschools,” he says.

“The objective of the new school’s man-agement team is to arrange scholarshipsfor nine players from disadvantaged back-grounds, thus ensuring that money is notthe most important criteria when deciding

which players will be accepted at the topcricket institutions.”

The school will be following the provin-cial education department’s curriculumand will be accepting Grade 8 and Grade9 pupils for next year. In this way, theschool will grow by a grade every year. “Af-ter five years, the school should have atleast 45 well-developed disadvantagedplayers vying for provincial selection onmerit, rather than opting for the very un-popular quota system,” says Shaik.

Balancing cricket and academics“The school will have a fully-fledged aca-

demic programme, but will fit the develop-ment of cricket skills into the daily pro-gramme.” According to the WPCA website, the school will be housed in the CenturyClub on the third floor at the southern endof the field. It will also use the facilities ofWestern Province Cricket Club, a merestone’s throw away from the stadium. “Ap-

plicants will be assessed in terms of theircricket ability by coaches on the school’sstaff and only those players with an aboveaverage ability to play cricket will be ac-cepted. Players who show real potentialbut who have fully not developed, will alsobe considered,” reads the statement.

Passionate about the game“Teaching staff will be registered with

the South African Council of Educators, while cricket coaches will be at least LevelTwo compliant coaches. The school’s coreactivity will be cricket development andplayers will be exposed to the best possibleprogrammes, workshops and practice ses-sions.”

The pupils will also will be exposed tomany forms of cricket and will play match-es in the WPCA schools and clubs competi-tion. They will also tour around the coun-tryandhost touring teams fromaround theworld.

“Playerswill not lose out on schoolwork,as teachers will be touring with the play-ers, ensuring that the academic pro-gramme continues,” Shaik says.

WPCA general manager Nabeal Dienpraises Shaik for his “forward thinking” interms of cricket development and educa-tion. “He is passionate about educationand more passionate about the game ofcricket,” Dien says.

“It is my contention that with his vast ex-perience and passion for education andcricket, this initiative will provide a natu-ral fit for ensuring a successful cricketschool.

“The WPCA is excited about this initia-tive and its implementation, as we have al-ways subscribed to these values of educa-tion, access and opportunity.”

V Anyone interested in joining the school can phone(021) 696 3612 or SMS 084 586 9488. For more information visit www.newlandscricket.co.za.

WPKLUBRUGBY: CHAOS TOE STUDENTESPANNE ONTTREK

Durbies krynou vrypasSAREL BURGER
