Best Management Prac ces (BMPs) BestManagementPractices,orBMPs,aredesignedtolessentheimpactofdevelopmentonlocalwaterbodiesbyreducingthevolumeofrunoffandconcentrationofpollutants.TypicalBMPsincludestormwaterin iltrationsystems,bioretentionsystems,stormwaterdetentionfacilitiesandvariousmanufacturedsystems.

Why inspect post‐construc on BMPs? Post‐constructionBMPinspectionisrequiredeveryyearforpropertieswithinmunicipalitiesthathavepassedaPost‐ConstructionStormwaterManagementOrdinance(requiredbyMaine’sSmallMunicipalSeparateStormSewerSystems[MS4]GeneralPermit)andevery iveyearsforpropertiesthatareoperatingunderaStormwaterPermitfromtheMaineDepartmentofEnvironmentalProtection(DEP).Theseinspectionsensurethatpost‐constructionstormwatermanagementplansarefollowedandstormwatermanagementfacilitiesaremaintained.Whetherayearlyor iveyearinspectionisrequired,allpost‐constructionBMPinspectionsshouldbemadebyprofessionalstrainedandcerti iedbytheMaineDEP.Thesethirdpartyinspectorsareabletodocumenthowwellasite’sBMPsarebeingmaintainedandiftheyarefunctioningasintended.
