Why must work occur at night?

• Anticipate two years of 24/7 construction activity to support tunneling work at Capitol Hill site beginning in early 2011

• Certain activities are required for tunnel worker safety• Maximizes project safety, efficiency, duration and cost

What goes on at night?

• No high impact equipment (jackhammers, concrete saws, etc.)

Type of Equipment:

• Tunnel ventilation fans, pumps, air compressors

• Generators

• Vehicles– hauling and delivery trucks– muck haul trucks– front-end loaders, backhoe– loaders, excavators

Solid plywood construction screening wall between 8-16’ tall around site

Variance from City of Seattle • Noise variance establishes noise limits for contractor work between

10pm - 7am weekdays, 10pm - 9am weekends, holidays • Daytime construction activities will comply with City’s construction

noise limits

• ST to incorporate feedback into variance application

• City of Seattle (DPD) will hold a public meeting to receive comments late summer

• City will decide whether to approve a noise variance within 60 days after public comment is received

• Contractor will prepare a detailed noise management plan

• Tunnel construction activities begin – early 2011
