Session Goals:

To provide an overview of three products for creating textbook-quality mathematical expressions for SMART Notebook.

To provide a short demonstration of the dynamic and interactive features of SMART Math Tools for Windows.

To provide a summary of the pros/cons of each product.

SMART Math Tools for Windows:

SMART Math Tools runs from within SMART Notebook with a customizable toolbar.

It includes dynamic and interactive features beyond basic equation editing.

Equation Editor & MathType:

Use copy-n-paste or Notebook's Screen Capture Tool to put the expression into Notebook. Experiment with these approaches, as the results do vary. Adjusting the size of the original expression may create a better copy.

The screen capture approach brings the white background with it. This can be removed by using the Picture Transparency feature.

The equation will not be editable in Notebook unless you have SMART Math Tools and use the copy/paste approach. If you don't have SMART Math Tools, you may want to save your original Word document for future editing.

Sometimes the Equation Editor is not available in Word. In that case, exit compatibility mode by going to File > Info > Convert (Compatibility Mode).

In Conclusion:

SMART Math Tools, Equation Editor, and MathType are excellent tools for adding mathematical expressions and equations to SMART Notebook lessons. SMART Math Tools include interactive and dynamic features too.

Assess the pros/cons to decide which option(s) would best meet your needs.
