Professional PhotographerBuilds Client Relationships
with Photo Scanning
Canadian photographer Harley Cross found his way into photo scanning theway many photographers do: Through customer inquiries. He already had aflatbed scanner and used it for the occasional job, but soon demand reachedthe point where a more productive piece of equipment was needed.
“It started out with clients who would ask occasionally if I were to scan forthem, and do them on a flatbed scanner, usually when things weren’t busy,”says Harley. “I was shocked by the number of high-end clients - doctors, lawyers and other people who value their privacy - who said they would never send their images away in ashoebox. I tried to source someone locally [to do scanning] and couldn’t find anyone. I made few inquiries, foundE-Z Photo Scan, learned about the Kodak Picture Saver Scanning System, and decided to purchase a scannerand do it myself on a larger scale.” Harley says the time is right for photographers to add scanningservices to their portfolio, as a response to an increasinglycrowded market. Rather than compete for new business withphotographers offering low-cost portrait packages, a photo-scanning service provides a way to expand offerings to current customers.Harley has been able to organically grow his photo scanning business through careful promotion to current customers, including placing marketing pieces for photo scanning and other services with print orders.

Also, during an initial consultation with a client, he mentions photo scanning. “I have a pre-consultation, evenbefore I do a photo shoot, and we mention scanning,” he said. “I have gotten some clients that way; you need topromote it where you can.”
Photo scanning is a natural add-on for pro photographers, says Harley, because successful studio operators areaccustomed to up selling and to building customer relationships. Photographers, for example, are accustomed toadd-on services to portrait sittings, like digital photo frames and coffee table books.
“Photo scanning helps create a more in-depth client relationship,” says Harley. “Depending in the size of the photocollection, it’s not just one session. It can be several.
“With some of my photography clients, I may see them once a year,” he adds. “Now, because of scanning, I havea stronger relationship with them, because I have spent several weeks scanning their images.”
