LEARNING HOW TO DO A LISTENING EXERCISE

SUCCESSFULLY

STEP ONE BEFORE you listen, read the questions

carefully to know exactly what information is relevant.

Then, PREDICT possible answers.

Example: ‘What time of the day is it?’

(Possible answers: morning, afternoon, evening, night)

STEP TWO• Listen to the CD as many times as

necessary but remember that in the listening exam you will only be allowed to listen three times.

Do not try to understand every word! Concentrate only on the information needed to answer the questions.

STEP THREE

Check your answers with the transcript.

Read for specific information.

STEP FOUR

Do reading comprehension. Read the transcript carefully and make sure you understand everything. You can guess many words or expressions from the context. Use the dictionary if necessary.

STEP FIVE• Learn new vocabulary. Choose two or

three useful words or expressions that you didn’t know. Write a new sentence or draw a picture to help you learn and remember them. Make sure you know how to pronounce these new words.

I have a black eye because I got into a fight yesterday.

STEP SIX• Check your pronunciation. Listen to the

CD again with the transcript in front of you. Are there any words that you thought were pronounced differently? Underline them and write an approximate phonetic translation or copy it from the dictionary.

Here is your receipt. “risíiit” /ri’si:t/

STEP SEVEN• Finally, listen to the CD again and pause it

after each sentence. Repeat out loud to practice pronunciation and intonation.
