TheStageIIrealignmentofSimonStreetlocatedinHamilton(Waikato)istobedesignedandscheduledforcompletioninthiscomingspring.FromtrafficanalysisSimonStreethasbeenpredictedtohaveanAnnualAverageDailyTraffic(AADT)of5800vehiclesperdaywith8%oftheAADTcomprisingofheavyvehicles.The240mstretchofroadhastwolanes(NorthernBoundandSouthernBound)whichiszonedasanUrbanArterialroadandhasanannualtrafficgrowthrateof2%.

FromanalyzingandconvertingthescalarpenetrometerdataatthethreegivenlocationsusingtheNZS4404:2004ParameterrelationshipgraphanAverageCBRvalueof6.7wasobtainedforthesite.Howeverlocation3producedanaverageCBRvalueof5.16whichindicatesthatthesoilatandaroundthislocationisalotweakerthantheaverage.DuetothistheCBRvalueof5.16,whichhasbeenroundedto5wasusedinthedesigningofthepavementstructureforperformanceandqualityassurance.ThepavementstructurewasdesignedusingtheAUSTROADSempiricalmethodofanunboundgranularpavementwithadesignlifeof25years.Incorporatingthecalculateddesigntraffic(DESA)of4.69x106theconcludedpavementstructurewillcompriseofabasecoursethicknessof160mm,aswellasasubbasethicknessof300mm.

Thefirstcoatsealwillcompriseofgrade4chipwithanaverageALDof6.5mmwhichmeetstheTNZspecificationrequirementsforgranularmaterial.Aquantityof23m3ofchipisrequiredforthefirstresealwitharesidualapplicationrateof1.26l/m2.Asecondcoatsealwillberequiredin2years’timeaftertheplacementofthefirstcoatseal.

Thesecondcoatsealwillcompriseofgrade3chipwithanaverageALDof8mmwhichmeetstheTNZspecificationrequirementsforgranularmaterial,aquantityof29m3willberequired.ThesecondcoatsealhasbeendesignedtowithstandtheincreasingAADTpassingthroughSimonStreetwhichhasbeenpredictedtoincreaseto6034vehicles.TheNorthernboundandSouthernboundlanehavebeendesignedseparatelyduetothesurfacetexturedepthhavingavarianceof0.03mm,whichwillalterthehotbinderapplicationrate.

Sincethecompletiondateisscheduledforspring,thesecondcoatsealwillbeappliedinthespringmonths,duetothisthebitumentobeusedforthesecondcoatresealwillcompriseofapenetrationgradeof130/150.130/150hasbeenselectedbecausetheuseofasofterbitumenduringthewarmerspringmonthscouldincreasetheoccurrenceofhightemperatureinducedbleeding.Theaverageshadedtemperatureisassumedtobe15°C,thereforethediluentcontentwillcompriseof8pphasrecommendedbyChipsealingNZ.Hamiltonexperiencedanaverage12‐14daysofrainduringthespringmonthsof2016,thereforeadhesionagentswillbeaddedcomprisingof1pph.

TheNorthernboundlanewillbeappliedatafinalhotbinderrateof1.519l/m2atasprayingtemperatureof156°Cduringconstruction.Therollingwillbegovernedbyasinglerollerataspeedof8km/h,whichwilltakeapproximately30minutestocompletetherequiredrollingfortheNorthernBoundlane.
