Simon Street Stage II Realignment 130 Madras St, Christchurch Central, Christchurch 8011 | 03‐9410 8000 | [email protected] September 14, 2016 MG6014 Assignment 1 Ara Institute of Canterbury 130 Madras St, Christchurch Central Christchurch 8011 Dear The Stage II realignment of Simon Street located in Hamilton (Waikato) is to be designed and scheduled for completion in this coming spring. From traffic analysis Simon Street has been predicted to have an Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT) of 5800 vehicles per day with 8% of the AADT comprising of heavy vehicles. The 240m stretch of road has two lanes (Northern Bound and Southern Bound) which is zoned as an Urban Arterial road and has an annual traffic growth rate of 2%. From analyzing and converting the scalar penetrometer data at the three given locations using the NZS4404:2004 Parameter relationship graph an Average CBR value of 6.7 was obtained for the site. However location 3 produced an average CBR value of 5.16 which indicates that the soil at and around this location is a lot weaker than the average. Due to this the CBR value of 5.16, which has been rounded to 5 was used in the designing of the pavement structure for performance and quality assurance. The pavement structure was designed using the AUSTROADS empirical method of an unbound granular pavement with a design life of 25 years. Incorporating the calculated design traffic (DESA) of 4.69x10 6 the concluded pavement structure will comprise of a basecourse thickness of 160mm, as well as a subbase thickness of 300mm. The first coat seal will comprise of grade 4 chip with an average ALD of 6.5mm which meets the TNZ specification requirements for granular material. A quantity of 23m 3 of chip is required for the first reseal with a residual application rate of 1.26l/m 2 . A second coat seal will be required in 2 years’ time after the placement of the first coat seal. The second coat seal will comprise of grade 3 chip with an average ALD of 8mm which meets the TNZ specification requirements for granular material, a quantity of 29m 3 will be required. The second coat seal has been designed to withstand the increasing AADT passing through Simon Street which has been predicted to increase to 6034 vehicles. The Northern bound and Southern bound lane have been designed separately due to the surface texture depth having a variance of 0.03mm, which will alter the hot binder application rate. Since the completion date is scheduled for spring, the second coat seal will be applied in the spring months, due to this the bitumen to be used for the second coat reseal will comprise of a penetration grade of 130/150. 130/150 has been selected because the use of a softer bitumen during the warmer spring months could increase the occurrence of high temperature induced bleeding. The average shaded temperature is assumed to be 15°C, therefore the diluent content will comprise of 8pph as recommended by Chipsealing NZ. Hamilton experienced an average 12‐14 days of rain during the spring months of 2016, therefore adhesion agents will be added comprising of 1pph. The Northern bound lane will be applied at a final hot binder rate of 1.519 l/m 2 at a spraying temperature of 156°C during construction. The rolling will be governed by a single roller at a speed of 8 km/h, which will take approximately 30 minutes to complete the required rolling for the Northern Bound lane.
