Where are we headed?
What could go wrong?
Breaking out of the box of low growth
Proposed Strategy: Positioning Africa globally• Unified African approach• Tourism, Transport, Trade, Foreign, Environment/Climate Change, Finance Ministers
• Tapping into new demographics• Millennials• Green tourism• Tech savvy
• Better use of multilateral funding: • UNESCO – cultural heritage• Global Environment Facility through UNEP - Biodiversity Conservation• WEF – Trade/Tourism Council• World Bank – poverty alleviation, skills development
Proposed Strategy: Promoting Africa internally• Intra-Africa trade 11%, Asia 50%, Europe 70%• Convince governments of high RoI• The Sheikh who not only recommended a hotel, he bought a few
• Early progress to borderless Africa, but still gaps• In 2014, globally 16% on a VoA, 6% in 2008• Reducing/removal of tourism specific taxes and tariffs• Closer collaboration with private sector• Promotion of Africa to Africans• Esp the rising middle class
Goal 1: Reach 22 visitors per 100 pop by 2030
Goal 2: Reach 5% receipts of total expenditure by 2025
