An overview of the design !and development process!

to Creation!

+Who we are!

  Jason Sauers!  Industrial Design!

Andrew Sanjanwala!  New Media Interactive Development!

+ Ideation and You!!

  Good ideas start off small!

  Well-planned ideas end up big!

Avoid mistakes others have already made!

  Learn from others successes !

  Use epic-sounding statements!!

+New Media Lab Redesign!

Problem Statement:!

Commercially available and cost appropriate computer workstations did not fulfill our requirements for the New Media Lab Redesign Project!

+ Student Needs… !

Workstations ! Same number of seats in room as current (30)! Dual-monitor support! Height well-matched to usage style (adjustable)! Space for laptop and/or study materials! Improved room mobility and visibility! Opportunity for re-configurability (multi-use)! Create a more inviting, social atmosphere. !

…and the ideal computer lab!

+ Student Needs… !

Mobile Projection Displays! Large enough to be seen across room, yet light

enough to transport! Easily movable! Compatible with alternative uses and projects! Ability to mirror wall projectors wirelessly! Multiple possible arrangements inside and

outside of room! Immersive “cage”! Video Column!

…and the ideal computer lab!

+Construction Systems!

Considerations! Cost (money)! Cost (time)! Utility! Aesthetics! Future flexibility!

Grid Beam!

  Strong!

  Durable!

  Too bulky!

  Costly!

  Ugly!

  Difficult to create non-squared angles!

80/20!

  Strong!

  Heavy!

  Flexible!

  Visually appealing!

  Difficult to quickly repurpose/fabricate!

  Very expensive!

  Difficult to create non-squared angles!

Creform!

  Strong!

  Durable!

  Multiple colors and combinations!

  Visually appealing!

  Affordable!

  Flexible!

Scratchbuilding!

  Flexible!

  Durable, if designed right!

  Refined end-product!

  Custom-tailored!

  Potential for affordability!

Very time consuming and labor intensive!

The Winner!

Creform (with a bit of homebrew)!

Creform frames!  Most cost- and time-effective

for our needs!  Simple to order, easy to work

with!

Custom-designed tabletops and baseboards!  Professional fit and finish

with minimal time and cost!
