Materials are interesting as the combination of useful consumer properties - attributes.

Materials can’t be separated from their available Shapes and applicable Processes a) to produce (synthesize); b) to shape; c) to join (assembly); d) to finish.

Optimal rational selection of a Material for an Application (a component) starts form the analysis of Function, Objective and Constraints.

Slide 3

Function What does component do ?Examples: Withstand concentrated or distributed load (force), conduct electric current, insulates volume from heat fluxes etc.

Objective What is to be maximized or minimized?Examples: Minimize cost, mass, eco-impact; maximize safety, energy content, service life.

Constraints a) What are non-negotiable conditions to be satisfied? b) What are compromise or desirable conditions?

Examples: a) Geometry specified, service temperature or medium;

b) stiffness, strength, cost.

Material Selection for OWT

Function OWT – strong support loaded in expansion

Objective (possible) а) min cost; b) min mass; c) mах service life;

d) mах length for deep wells.

Constraints a)Operational temperature at least +150 С, +200 С, +300

С … Medium pH 2…12, organic solvents, H2S, СО2 Abrasive wear,

cavitation … Low temperature resistance -60 С Geometry specified

b) OWT must not failure under own weight and/or as a result of corrosion.

Modern materials for O&G equipment – real life and future

• Economical issues are currently dominating – mainly low alloyed and stainless

steels are applied worldwide, although with special coatings. Al alloys – limited

applications.

• Operational costs, logistics, special well conditions may put forward wider use of

Al alloys, start with Ti, Mg and Ni alloys and modern composites – GFRP and

CFRP based on PEEK and PPS, carbon-based materials.

• Principal trend - hybrid and composite materials purposely designed in

collaboration of designers and materials science engineers.
