OnFebruary22,1931ayoungPolishnun,Sr.FaustinaKowalska,sawavisionofJesuswithraysofmercystreamingfromHisHeart.Hetoldhertohaveanimagepaintedtorepresentthevisionandtosignit,“Jesus,ITrustinYou!”CallinghertheApostleandSecretaryofHismercy,HeorderedhertobeginwritingadiarysootherswouldcometoknowandtrustinHim.Inaseriesofrevelationsthatfollowedbetween1931and1938,HetaughtherthatHismercyisunlimitedandavailableeventothegreatestsinners.HerevealedspecialwaysforpeopletorespondtoHismercyintheirlives,andHegaveherseveralpromisesforthosewhowouldtrustinHismercy,andshowmercytoothers.BythetimeofSr.Faustina’sdeathin1939,DevotiontoTheDivineMercyhadalreadybeguntospreadthroughoutEasternEurope.In1940,Fr.JosephJarzebowsi,aPolishMarianpriestblacklistedbytheNaziSS,prayedtothemercifulSaviortohelphimescape,vowingtospendtherestofhislifespreadingtheDivineMercyDevotion.HearrivedsafelyonAmericansoilinMay1941,andMariancommunitiesinDetroitandWashington,DC,weresoondistributingMercyofGodmaterials.In1944,agroupofMariansopenedanewhouseandapostolateonEdenHillinStockbridge,Mass,andbeganspreadingtheDevotiononalargescale.By1953,theMarianapostolateonEdenHillhadbecometheinternationalcenterfortheDivineMercyDevotion,distributingmorethan25millionpiecesofmercyliteratureperyear.In1960,withdonationsfromallovertheworld,theMariansofEdenHillcompletedconstructionofashrinetotheMercyofGod.TheshrinehasnowbecometheNationalShrineofTheDivineMercy-spiritualhomeoftheAssociationofMarianHelpers-andtheapostolatehasbecometheMarianHelpsCenter,amodernreligiouspublishinghousespreadingdevotiontothemercyofGodandtoMary.In1966,throughtheeffortsofKarolCardinalWojtyla(PopeJohnPaulII),theinformativeprocessforbeautificationofSr.Faustinawasbegun.Themessageofmercyisnowbeingspreadthroughouttheworld,theprocessforSr.Faustina’sbeautificationhasbegun,andherdiaryhasbecomethehandbookfortheDevotiontotheDivineMercy.
