LENOX — Capitol Steps,the group that delivers politi-cal satire each summer atCranwell and other placesaround the nation, is anensemble effort. Yet occasion-ally someone new pops up inthe ever-changing cast, offer-ing a performance techniqueand versatility striking enoughto capture attention, often byplaying against type.

Felicia Curry, a pretty, litheyoung African-American, is thenew girl in town. Initiated in thetroupe in 2008, she is a com-manding figure on the stage.

Curry makes a credible SarahPalin, not because she resem-bles her at all, but because shehas perfected the mannerismsand speech patterns — includ-ing all the malapropisms andother foibles — of the formergovernor of Alaska and Re-publican vice-presidential can-didate in 2008.

She makes a convincingKim jong-il , a persuasiveJanet Napolitano and an au-thoritative Southwest Airlinesflight attendant explainingthe latest absurdity of sky-bound regulations.

In one of the group’s funni-est new sketches, Curry, asRuth Bader Ginsburg, andAnn Johnson, portrayingSonia Sotomayor, sing thepraises of Antonin Scalia tothe tune of LeonardBernstein’s “Maria.” Equallyhilarious Mike Tilford, anorange mask covering half ofhis face, intones a JohnBoehner parody of AndrewLloyd Webber’s “Music of theNight,” this one called“Loonies of the Right.”

Gays in the military and therepeal of "Don't Ask, Don'tTell," still a sizzling topic, hasMike Carruthers and Jon Belltendering a tune called “Menof the Queen Beret.”

Romney were among theevening's targets at the per-formance I attended, as werethe irresistible Anthony Wien-er, Arnold Schwarzenegger,Mike Huckabee, Charlie Sheenand Muammar Gaddhafi as apair, and Newt Gingrich. AlGore had a brief messageabout global warming, SarahPalin offered advice to Mich-elle Bachmann, and SilvioBurlesconi, health care, theArizona border patrol and tele-phone hacking by News Cor-poration people also made thecut this year.

Another of the better newsketches involved a fundraiserfor pirates, summoning aneager Susan Doyle, a mum-bling Bob Dylan and an arro-gant Donald Trump. Kim jonil’s “How Do You Solve aProblem Like Korea” and theTSA number, “Strangers onYour Flight,” were repeatedfrom previous summers with

different casting.Bell, a tall lanky gentleman,

is the current Barak Obama,ideal in that hesitant mannerof speaking, filled with pauses,and accompanied by hand ges-tures, but his Afro wig needsto be updated with a few dash-es of gray to authenticate theobvious rigors of living in theWhite House.

Howard Breitbart is back atthe keyboard, supplying fineaccompaniment, deft counter-point for the spoken wordsand appreciative laughter forthe sallies that he must haveheard hundreds of times.

nAnd no Capitol Steps per-

formance would be completewithout the de rigueur exer-cise in spoonerisms, the ex-change of initial consonantson important words, or as theSteppers put it, “Lirty Dies,”in a skillful commentary byTilford, “The Porld of Woliticsand the Sporld of Worts.”

And as a parting gesture,the group, which marks its30th anniversary in Decem-ber, reeled off the eventfulyears in quick one-liners,employing masks, props andappropriate posters, all inunder five minutes.
