Cranwell Resort and Spa: Capitol Steps Berkshire Cable Highlights

1
By Richard Houdek Special to the Eagle LENOX — Capitol Steps, the group that delivers politi- cal satire each summer at Cranwell and other places around the nation, is an ensemble effort. Yet occasion- ally someone new pops up in the ever-changing cast, offer- ing a performance technique and versatility striking enough to capture attention, often by playing against type. Felicia Curry, a pretty, lithe young African-American, is the new girl in town. Initiated in the troupe in 2008, she is a com- manding figure on the stage. Curry makes a credible Sarah Palin, not because she resem- bles her at all, but because she has perfected the mannerisms and speech patterns — includ- ing all the malapropisms and other foibles — of the former governor of Alaska and Re- publican vice-presidential can- didate in 2008. She makes a convincing Kim jong-il , a persuasive Janet Napolitano and an au- thoritative Southwest Airlines flight attendant explaining the latest absurdity of sky- bound regulations. In one of the group’s funni- est new sketches, Curry, as Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Ann Johnson, portraying Sonia Sotomayor, sing the praises of Antonin Scalia to the tune of Leonard Bernstein’s “Maria.” Equally hilarious Mike Tilford, an orange mask covering half of his face, intones a John Boehner parody of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Music of the Night,” this one called “Loonies of the Right.” Gays in the military and the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," still a sizzling topic, has Mike Carruthers and Jon Bell tendering a tune called “Men of the Queen Beret.” n Hillary and Bill Clinton, Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi and Mitt Romney were among the evening's targets at the per- formance I attended, as were the irresistible Anthony Wien- er, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mike Huckabee, Charlie Sheen and Muammar Gaddhafi as a pair, and Newt Gingrich. Al Gore had a brief message about global warming, Sarah Palin offered advice to Mich- elle Bachmann, and Silvio Burlesconi, health care, the Arizona border patrol and tele- phone hacking by News Cor- poration people also made the cut this year. Another of the better new sketches involved a fundraiser for pirates, summoning an eager Susan Doyle, a mum- bling Bob Dylan and an arro- gant Donald Trump. Kim jon il’s “How Do You Solve a Problem Like Korea” and the TSA number, “Strangers on Your Flight,” were repeated from previous summers with different casting. Bell, a tall lanky gentleman, is the current Barak Obama, ideal in that hesitant manner of speaking, filled with pauses, and accompanied by hand ges- tures, but his Afro wig needs to be updated with a few dash- es of gray to authenticate the obvious rigors of living in the White House. Howard Breitbart is back at the keyboard, supplying fine accompaniment, deft counter- point for the spoken words and appreciative laughter for the sallies that he must have heard hundreds of times. n And no Capitol Steps per- formance would be complete without the de rigueur exer- cise in spoonerisms, the ex- change of initial consonants on important words, or as the Steppers put it, “Lirty Dies,” in a skillful commentary by Tilford, “The Porld of Wolitics and the Sporld of Worts.” And as a parting gesture, the group, which marks its 30th anniversary in Decem- ber, reeled off the eventful years in quick one-liners, employing masks, props and appropriate posters, all in under five minutes. 5 a.m. WBEC (AM 1420) First Light with Dirk Van. 5:00 WSBS (FM 94.1/AM 860) The Morning Show with Dan Schilling. 5:00 WBRK (AM 1340) America in the Morning. 5:00 WBEC (FM 95.9) Megan in the Morning with Megan Carlotta. 5:00 WUPE (AM 1110, FM 100.1) Whoopee in the Morning with Cheryl Adams. 6:00 WNAW (AM 1230) The Morning Show with Mike Garland. 6:00 WBRK-AM Rick Beltaire. 6:00 WBEC-AM Imus in the Morning. 6:00 WBRK (FM 101.7) Mary in the Morning. 7:30 WTBR (FM 89.7) Good Morning Pittsfield. LENOX — Capitol Steps, the group that delivers politi-cal satire each summer atCranwell and other placesaround the nation, is anensemble effort. Yet occasion-ally someone new pops up inthe ever-changing cast, offer-ing a performance techniqueand versatility striking enoughto capture attention, often byplaying against type.

Felicia Curry, a pretty, litheyoung African-American, is thenew girl in town. Initiated in thetroupe in 2008, she is a com-manding figure on the stage.

Curry makes a credible SarahPalin, not because she resem-bles her at all, but because shehas perfected the mannerismsand speech patterns — includ-ing all the malapropisms andother foibles — of the formergovernor of Alaska and Re-publican vice-presidential can-didate in 2008.

She makes a convincingKim jong-il , a persuasiveJanet Napolitano and an au-thoritative Southwest Airlinesflight attendant explainingthe latest absurdity of sky-bound regulations.

In one of the group’s funni-est new sketches, Curry, asRuth Bader Ginsburg, andAnn Johnson, portrayingSonia Sotomayor, sing thepraises of Antonin Scalia tothe tune of LeonardBernstein’s “Maria.” Equallyhilarious Mike Tilford, anorange mask covering half ofhis face, intones a JohnBoehner parody of AndrewLloyd Webber’s “Music of theNight,” this one called“Loonies of the Right.”

Gays in the military and therepeal of "Don't Ask, Don'tTell," still a sizzling topic, hasMike Carruthers and Jon Belltendering a tune called “Menof the Queen Beret.”

nHillary and Bill Clinton, Joe

Biden, Nancy Pelosi and Mitt

Romney were among theevening's targets at the per-formance I attended, as werethe irresistible Anthony Wien-er, Arnold Schwarzenegger,Mike Huckabee, Charlie Sheenand Muammar Gaddhafi as apair, and Newt Gingrich. AlGore had a brief messageabout global warming, SarahPalin offered advice to Mich-elle Bachmann, and SilvioBurlesconi, health care, theArizona border patrol and tele-phone hacking by News Cor-poration people also made thecut this year.

Another of the better newsketches involved a fundraiserfor pirates, summoning aneager Susan Doyle, a mum-bling Bob Dylan and an arro-gant Donald Trump. Kim jonil’s “How Do You Solve aProblem Like Korea” and theTSA number, “Strangers onYour Flight,” were repeatedfrom previous summers with

different casting.Bell, a tall lanky gentleman,

is the current Barak Obama, ideal in that hesitant mannerof speaking, filled with pauses, and accompanied by hand ges-tures, but his Afro wig needsto be updated with a few dash-es of gray to authenticate theobvious rigors of living in theWhite House.

Howard Breitbart is back atthe keyboard, supplying fineaccompaniment, deft counter-point for the spoken wordsand appreciative laughter forthe sallies that he must haveheard hundreds of times.

nAnd no Capitol Steps per-

formance would be completewithout the de rigueur exer-cise in spoonerisms, the ex-change of initial consonantson important words, or as theSteppers put it, “Lirty Dies,”in a skillful commentary byTilford, “The Porld of Woliticsand the Sporld of Worts.”

And as a parting gesture, the group, which marks its30th anniversary in Decem-ber, reeled off the eventfulyears in quick one-liners,employing masks, props andappropriate posters, all inunder five minutes.
