CLASSIFICATIONOFCULVERTS

TypesofculvertsAvengManufacturingInfrasetoffersthefullrangeof S-Class rectangular portal culverts readilyavailable in lengths of 1.2m. Culverts ranging insizefrom450mmx450mmupto3600mmx3000mmwith Butt-joints are manufactured to the relevantS-Class strength requirements. All S-Class portalculverts bear the SANS mark and are designed,manufacturedandtestedinaccordancewithSANS986:2006:Precastreinforcedconcreteculverts.Reinforced concrete bases are available for allS-Classculvertsandareeasily installedonsite tocompleteastructurallystableengineeredunit.

SAR rectangular portal culverts manufactured toSpoornetloading,NR1983,havethickerdeckandleg sections to accommodate larger fill heightsand imposed loads.Culvertsranging insizes from900mm x 450mm up to 3000mm x 3000mm aremanufactured and unit lengths ranging from 1.2mup to1.5masstated in theproduct tables.SARculvertsareavailablein2strengthclasses,0-5mfilland 5-10m fill. Reinforced concrete bases areavailableforSARculvertsbeingplacedwherethefillheightdoesnotexceedamaximumof5m.

Ribbed skew haunch culverts are designed andmanufacturedtowithstandC-Classloadingconditions,consistingofaverticalproof loadof150kN/mandahorizontalproof loadof30kN/m.Ribbedculvertsrangeinsizefrom600mmx450mmupto3000mmx3000mmandvaryinunitlengthasshownintheproducttables.

AvengManufacturing Infrasetalsomanufacturejackingboxculvertsinvarioussizesandinstandardlengthsof1.190mwhicharemanufacturedwithboltholesforlongitudinalties.

StrengthofculvertsPrecastportalculvertsareclassifiedintermsoftheircrushingstrengthwhensubjectedtoacombinationofloadingcases involvingverticalandhorizontalknifeedgetestsconductedunderfactoryconditions.Theproofloadtestcanbedefinedasalineloadthataculvertmustresistwithoutthedevelopmentofcrackwidthsexceeding0.25mmoveralengthof300mmorovertwoadjacentribsinribbed16culverts.Whenrequired,ultimateloadtestarealsocarriedouttoamagnitudeof25%greaterthantheapplicableproofloads.

Therearethreedifferentloadingconfigurationsthatare applied to precast portal culverts to simulatetheinstalledconditions,namelythedeckbendingmoment,deckshearandtheinnerlegbendingmoment.TheinnerlegbendingmomentisonlytakenintoconsiderationfortheS-Classportalculverts.

LoadsonculvertsS-Classportalculvertsaretestedtoaverticalproofloadwhichisafunctionofthestrengthclassmultipliedbythespanoftheculvert,ahorizontalproofloadof30kN/mappliedtothetopofthelegandahorizontallegloadappliedataheight0.2timestheheightofthe legmeasured from thebottomof the leg forculvertswithaheighttospanrationofmorethat0.5.Thehorizontallegloadisdeterminedbytheverticalloadmultipliedbytherelevantfactor.

InstallationconditionsThetrenchconditionoccurswhentheculvertisplacedintoatrenchcutintonaturalgroundandthenbackfilledwithsuitablematerial.

TrenchedInstallation

TemporaryproparrangementNote:ForH>1.5m,providehorizontalpropsat40%heightabovebaseduringbackfillingandcompaction.Onepropperprecastconcreteunit.

Intheembankmentconditiontheculvertisinstalledatgroundlevelandisbackfilledwithsuitablematerial.

Loadclassifications

SAR portal culverts are manufactured for installations underrailwaytrackanddesignedtotakeaccountoftraintrack,ballastandbackfillloadcombinationsasstatedintheSpoornetLoadingcodeofpractice:NR1983.

Thefillheightabovetheculvert,determinesthestrengthclassof theculverts.AllSARculvertsareavailable in twostrengthclassestosuiteither0-5mor5-10mfillheightconditions.
