PART 2

STANDARD CONCRETE BOX CULVERTS

GENERAL

This manual contains a complete set of construction drawings, steel

bending schedules and lists of quantities of materials for

the following single and multiple opening box culverts:

Box culvert, one opening, width x height = 2.5x1.2m

11 11 two openings, " 11 11 = 4.0x2.Om

The culverts are designed to carry the normal highway loading,

type HA as given in BS 5400 and max. 2.0m of fill material

above the culvert. According to the "Road Design Manual Part IV"

the culverts can therefore be located on Class C, D or E roads

only, since if a culvert is to be located on a Class A or

B road an additional design check for 30 units of HB loading

shall be required.

The IConstruction drawings are contained in section 2A while

the bending schedules and lists of quantities of materials

are contained in section 2B of he manual.

DRAWINGS NEEDED FOR NEW PROJECTS

When it is decided to construct a standard culvert using the

construction drawings contained in this manual, only a "General

Arrangement" drawing will be required to be prepared.

The "General Arrangement" drawing shall be prepared before

construction work is started and the drawing shall fully define

the project. The following information shall be included

on the drawing:-

a) Layout of Project

- Elevation

- Plan

- Typical cross-section

All necessary dimensions should be included.

b) Reference to Standard Drawings

All references to the appropriate standard drawings

necessary to construct the structure should be included.

(See notes on drwg. SB/501)

c) Location Map

The following shall be included on the map:

- Road number

- River name as specified on 1:50,000 topographic

map sheet

- 1:50,000 topographic map sheet number and map

grid reference

- Names of and distance in km from nearby identifiable

spot on each side of bridge site.

d) Characteristics of River Crossing

- Dimensions of stream bed in vicinity of crossing

(slope, width, depth and floodplains)

- Type of bed material and size of particles

- Rocky outcrops in bank or bed

- Evidence of scour (if applicable)

- Maximum flood height and velocity of stream

during flood

- Size and type of flood debris (if applicable)

- Usual flow depth and width in both dry and wet

periods.
