What Makes Clarion Special? Its People WeareindifficulttimesforeducationintheUnitedStates.Ourschoolsarefacedwithincreasingdemandsofaccountabilitywhilefundingdwindles.Socialillspermeateintotheclassroomsandstaffispushedtothelimitinanattempttosupplyresources,support,andhelpbeyondaclasssyllabus.Inadditiontothecurricularchallenges,westillexpectoureducationalinstitutionstobepartof,andcontributeto,thegreatercommunity. CertainlythisistrueforhighereducationandClarionUniversityhasfaceditsshareoftheseburdensandhurdles.Andwhentheseobstaclescomeatusataratethatseemsunfair,unequal,andunmanageable,wethrowourhandsupindespair,shakeourheadsisdismay,andquestion,“What’shappeningatourdearalmamater?” InearlyMay,Isawtheclearest,mostinspiringevidencethatwhat’shappeningatourdearalmamateraresomeprettywonderfulthings.AsamemberoftheAlumniBoard,ItooktheuniversityuponaninvitationtoattendthefourthannualReinhardAwardsCeremony.Withmysonattendingtheuniversityandadaughterwhoisarecentgraduate,Iknewtherewerelotsofgoodthingshappeningatthecampusbutwantedtoseethingsfirsthandformyself.

Inspiring Line-up Iwastreatedtoanamazingline-upofsomeofthemostwonderfulandinspiringyoungmenandwomenandimpressivefacultymembersClarionhastooffer.Iheardstoriesofstudentsdevotingthemselvestoimprovementoftheschooland,mostimportantly,theworldinwhichitexists.AlonglistofstudentswerepresentedcertificatesforattendingthesevensessionsoftheMaryWaltersLeadershipDevelopmentSeries,learningaboveandbeyondrequiredclasswork.TheirachievementsinacademicworkwerenotedinrecognitionbyWho’sWhoAmongStudentsinAmericanUniversitiesandCollegesandbytheJamesD.MooreScholarshipAward.IsawstudentsacceptawardsincludingtheJamesGemmellStudentLeaderAwardfortheirleadershipandhardworkasstudentsenators,orientationleaders,andleadersoftheGreekcommunity,workanddedicationthatimprovethequalityoflifeandeducationatClarion.IalsoheardstoriesofstudentswhohaveraisedwhatseemedtobehundredsandhundredsofdollarsandwhospenttimeandenergytoimprovethequalityoflifebeyondtheClarionCampus.OrganizationsandinstitutionssuchasChildren’sHospitalinPittsburghandtheClarionHospitalhavebeenthebeneficiariesofthelargessofClarionstudents.Andsupportingthesestudentsareoutstandingfacultymemberswhoseetheirjobsnotsimplyasimpartinginformationinaclassroom,butexhortingandinspiringtheirstudentstoextendtheirlivesbeyondthoseparameters. Dr.JeffWaple,directorofcampuslife,ingivingtheAdvisoroftheYearawardtoDr.JamiePhillipsusedthesewordstodescribehim:Compassion,Care,Dedication,Counselor,Advisor,Mentor,andFriend.ThequalitiesdescribenotonlyDr.PhillipsbutALLoftheawardees,students,andfacultywhoexemplifywhatwewantClariontobeabout.Theyarestrongexamplesforallofustoemulate. Ihaveengagedincountlessdiscussionswithfellowalumniabout“WhatmakesClarionsogreat?Whydowehaveanattachmenttoourschoolseeminglybeyondthatofalumniofothercollegesanduniversities?”I’mnotsureifwhatIsawandheardthateveningmakesClarionunique,butitmostdefinitelymakesitspecial.It’sthereasonIserveontheAlumniboardwithpride,whyIpromoteCUwheneverIcan,whyI’mpleasedandproudmydaughterisagraduateandmysonattends. Thisiscertainlynotatimetorestorbecomesatisfiedwithresultssofar.ClarionUniversityismeeting,head-on,theseeminglyoverwhelmingchallengessetinfrontofit.Farbeyondtheplaquesandpaperstheyreceived,theaccomplishmentsandworkofthesestudentsandfacultymembers–compassionate,caring,anddedicated–shouldserveasinspirationtoallofusasweliveourlives,livesrootedstronglyintheproudtraditionoftheClarionexperience.

BrentjoinedtheClarionUniversityfacultyin1976.HehadpreviouslytaughtatGettysburgCollegeandLycomingCollege. BornApril26,1945,inCoatesville,hewasthesonofDorothyE.BrentandthelateNormanD.Brent.Hegraduatedin1967fromPurdueUniversityinIndianawithabachelorofsciencedegreeinchemistry.HethenreceivedhisPh.D.in1974inorganicchemistryfromPennStateUniversity. Dr. Edward Grejda (’57),70,whoservedasaprofessorofEnglishandinterimdeanoftheCollegeofArtsandSciencesatClarionUniversityfrom1961-96,diedSaturday,May13,2006,athisresidence. BornNov.10,1935,inExport,hewasthesonofVincentandLydaLachmanekGrejda. Hereceivedhisbachelor’sdegreefromClarionStateTeacher’sCollegein1957wherehewasamemberofAlphaGammaPhiFraternity.Hewentontoearnamaster’sofliteraturedegreein1961anddoctoratewithdistinctionin1969withareasofspecialtyinAmericanliteratureandShakespearefromtheUniversityofPittsburgh.HereceivedtheClarionUniversityAlumniAssociationDistinguishedFacultyAwardin1985. “Ibelievethatliteratureistheideallaboratoryinwhichthestudent,throughexaminingothers,examineshimself,and,intheprocess,increaseshisownawarenessofhumancondition,therebyenhancinghiscapacitytobehumanandhumane,”Grejdasaidabouthisviewofeducation.“Ienjoyinteractingwithyoungpeople,watchingthemawakentotheuniquenessofthemselves,ofothers,andoflifeitself.” GrejdatookhisfirstteachingjobatRockyGrovein1957andthenmovedtoBethelParkHighSchoolasaseniorEnglishteacher.Hereturnedtohisalmamaterin1961asanassistantprofessor.Heservedasdepartmentchairmanfrom1971-79and1987-90.HealsoservedasinterimdeanoftheCollegeofArtsandSciencesfrom1984to1985. In1980-81,hewasselectedaseniorFulbrightlectureranddirectoroftheAmericanliteratureteamattheUniversityofBeijinginthePeoplesRepublicofChina.TheteampresentedAmericanliteratureinChinaforthefirsttimesincetherevolutionin1949.TheAmericanliteraturesessionswereattendedby52collegeanduniversityfacultymembersfrom26institutionthroughoutChina,allowingagiantstepinopeningtheculturaldoorsbetweenthetwonations. GrejdacontinuedhisassociationwiththeFulbrightorganization,completingasecondFulbrightscholaryearin1986-87attheUniversityofWestIndiesinBarbados.HecontinuedtoparticipateinFulbrighteventsthroughouttheyearsincludingtheannualconferencesoftheFulbrightAssociationand,asaformerFulbrightScholar,wasinvitedbyPresidentBillClintontoattendthe88thbirthdaytributetoSenatorJ.WilliamFulbrightin1993. Heissurvivedbyhiswife,Gail (Fulton ’66);twosons,Richardandwife,Lynn,ofClarion,andStevenandwife,Elaine,ofRochester,Mich.;andfivegrandchildren,Erin,Eric,andKevinGrejda,allofClarion,andAidanandJohannaGrejdaofRochester,Mich.;abrother,Vincent,ofPittsburgh;andasister,FrancesGrejda,ofPittsburgh. Greeks In The Spotlight TheClarionUniversityInterfraternityandPanhellenicCouncilsrecognizedseveralmembersofClarion’sGreekcommunityattheFourthAnnualReinhardAwardsceremony. Eachyear,thegoverningcouncilsrecognizeonemanandonewomanwhohaveexcelledintheareasofscholarship,communityservice,chapterinvolvement,GoverningCouncilinvolvement,andcampusinvolvementduringthepastacademicyear.Theawardsarealsoaccompaniedbyscholarshipstotalingapproximately$500foreachrecipient. SelectedasGreekManoftheYearisJustinDandoyofPhiDeltaTheta.HeisfromButler,Pa.,andparticipatedinafashionshowtobenefitOperationClarionCares,workedtheAmericanRedCrossBlooddrives,andservedasbothanIFCofficer,chapterofficer,andstudentsenator.HewasrecognizedbytheNortheastGreekLeadershipAssociationasaGreekLeaderofDistinctionand,mostrecently,waselectedpresidentofClarionUniversity’sStudentSenate. TheGreekWomanoftheYearisKelsiWilcoxofSigmaSigmaSigma.SheisfromRussell,Pa.,andalsoservedasanofficerinherchapterandthegoverningcouncil.SheisamemberofGAMMA(GreeksAdvocatingfortheMatureManagementofAlcohol),isacertifiedPeertoPeerEducator,holdsofficeinAlphaPhiOmegaNationalServiceFraternity,andisamemberoftwohonorsocieties.HercommunityserviceinvolvementisextensiveandshewasthedrivingforcebehindtheSpring2006GreekServiceDay. ThegoverningcouncilsalsorecognizedtwograduatingseniorswhohavemadeapositiveimpactontheGreekcommunityduringthecourseoftheirundergraduatemembership.Theyare: DanHudockofTauKappaEpsilon.HeisfromBaltimore,Md.,andhasservedasthecommunityservicechairforbothhischapterandtheIFCandisindirectlyresponsibleforthecompletionofover10,000hoursofcommunityservicebymembersoftheGreekcommunity.Hehasalsoservedasthecouncil’sscholarshipchair.ThecouncilorganizestheannualscholarshipbanquetanddevelopedaproposalfortheinstitutionofatutoringprogramforindividualswhoareinterestedinjoiningafraternitybutdonotmeettheminimumGPArequirementforaffiliation.Healsoservedachairforthe2006GreekWeekcompetition. AlishiaAzzarelloofSigmaSigmaSigma.SheisfromMonroeville,Pa.,andhasattendedmanycouncilsponsoredeventsduringthepastfouryears.InadditiontoGreekserviceprojects,shehasparticipatedinmultipleSaturdayServiceDaysandtheClarionDanceMarathon.WithintheGreekcommunity,shewasaleadingadvocateforthecouncil’sinvolvementintheFall2005NationalHazingPreventionWeek.Shehasheldseveralchairpositionswithinherchapterandistheimmediatepastpresident. Lastyear,thecouncilsdevelopedthe“LivingtheRitualAward.”Theawardismeanttorecognizeafraternitymanorsororitywomanwhoembracesthevaluesoftheirfraternity/sororityandwhosedailyconductmakesthemarolemodeltotheirfellowGreeks. TheawardwaspresentedtoAmandaBlackhurstofDeltaZeta.SheisfromErie,Pa.,andistheimmediatepastpresidentofOrderofOmega.ShewasrecentlynamedDeltaZeta’sRegionIIIOutstandingSeniorandhasacceptedatravelingconsultantpositionwithDeltaZeta. TheOfficeofCampusLifealsorecognizedthefollowingchaptersforattaininga“SilverRating”ontheChapterAssessmentProgram:DeltaPhiEpsilon,EpsilonOmicronChapter;DeltaZeta,EpsilonThetaChapter;PhiDeltaTheta,PennsylvaniaXiChapter;PhiMuAlpha,OmicronMuChapter;andPhiSigmaSigma,GammaGammaChapter.TheChapterAssessmentProgram,developedinSpring2005aspartoftheGreekPlan,isacomprehensiveassessmenttoolthatreviewsallfacetsoftheoperationsoftherecognizedfraternitiesandsororitiesoncampus.

Fraternity And Sorority Scholars Honored ClarionUniversity’sOrderofOmegachapterrecentlyrecognizedtheacademicachievementsofmembersoftheGreekCommunity.Onehundredandelevenstudents,representingthemajorityofthecurrentlyrecognizedfraternityandsororitychaptersoncampus,werehonoredatthefourthannualGreekScholarshipBanquetinChandlerDiningHall.Thestudentseitherhaveaminimumcumulative3.2qualitypointaverage(QPA)orattainedatleast3.2QPAduringeachoftheprevioustwosemesters. ThekeynoteaddresswasdeliveredbyLisaBria(’04),analumnaofDeltaZeta.ShesharedhowherClarionUniversityeducationandexperiencesasamemberoftheGreekcommunitypreparedhertoworkforhersororityasaChapterConsultantandpursueamaster’sdegreeatDuquesneUniversity.SheclosedbystressingtheimportanceofdevelopingastrongsenseofcommunitywithinthefraternitiesandsororitiesoncampusandchallengedthoseassembledtoseethebigpictureofGreeklife,byrealizingthattheirorganizationstranscendClarionUniversityandlinkthemtoanationwidesupportsystem. Dandoy Named ‘Greek Leader Of Distinction’ JustinDandoy,ClarionUniversity’sInterfraternityCouncilVicePresidentandmemberofPhiDeltaThetaFraternity,wasoneof10studentsrecognizedbytheNortheastGreekLeadershipAssociation(NGLA)asaGreekLeaderofDistinctionatitsannualconferenceinHershey,Pa. TheGreekLeadersofDistinctionAwardseekstorecognizeoutstandingmembersoftheNortheasternGreekcommunitywhomexemplifytheidealsofsororityand/orfraternitymembershipintheirdailylives.TheotherrecipientswerefromBryantUniversity,DrexelUniversity,DuquesneUniversity,MassachusettsInstituteofTechnology,SUNYPlattsburgh,theUniversityofMassachusetts,theUniversityofNewHampshire,andVillanovaUniversity. “Itwasquiteasurpriseandhonortowinthisaward,”saidDandoy.“Anawardsuchasthisisinspiringtome.It’swonderfultoknowthatweasGreekscanbeacknowledgedforthepositivethingswedo.IonlywishthateachandeveryGreekthathashelpedmeinmycollegiatecareercouldgetanawardtoo.OnethingIhavelearnedisthatleaderscannotworktotheirfullpotentialwithoutalittlehelpfromothers.” Dandoy,whoisfromButler,Pa.,wasunabletoattendtheNGLAconferencedueaconflictwiththerehearsalscheduleforhisroleintheClarionUniversityTheatreproductionofthemusical,“ILoveYou,You’rePerfect,NowChange.” NGLAwascreatedinAugust2000asaresultofamergerbetweentheNortheastInterfraternityConferenceandtheNortheastPanhellenicConference.NGLAexiststopromotethefoundingprinciplesandpositivetraditionsofallGreekletterorganizationsthroughopportunitiesthatencouragelearningandleadershipfortheNortheastregion.
