Where Tomorrow’s Leaders are Students Today
Annual UNCF Banquet Held at Rust College
Rust College was the setting of the 23rd Annual Holly Springs/Marshall County UNCF Banquet held Thursday evening, February 21st. The near-capacity crowd who attended the event was treated to wonderful music by the Rust College Male Ensemble, moving testimony and a rousing keynote address. Greetings were
brought forth by Mayor Andre’ DeBerry, and Mr. Sam McClatchy, UNCF committee member. Dr. Kenneth T. Whalum, pastor of The New Olivet Baptist Church in Memphis, Tennessee, delivered an inspiring speech, based on the event’s theme of “Getting Students To and Through College”. He urged the audience to get involved in the lives of young adults
who are trying to gain an education.
“What can we do to get young people to and through college? We must pour ourselves into the lives of some young person,” he said. “Those of you in the midst of your journey at Rust College, be en-couraged. You won’t get through unless you keep on moving…make up your mind right now to finish college so when you finish, you can help someone else and give back to those people who
helped you.”
The audience was also treated to a stirring testimony by Ms. Tanya Kelly Kirk, a UNCF scholarship recipient who will graduate from Rust College in April. Tanya returned to Rust to earn her degree after leaving the school in 1990. She credits UNCF with helping her to pay for her final year of
school. “It really didn’t matter what year I finished, just that I finished. I realize I needed the second half of my life to be completed. It’s not what people think of me, it’s about what God and what I think of myself. Now I believe my calling is to be an advocate and a spokesperson for education. A
mind is a terrible thing to waste if you choose not to grow.”
Tokens of appreciation were presented to Dr. Whalum by Dr. David L. Beckley and the Student Government Association of Rust College, for his participation in the event. Special tokens were also given to Mr. Lawrence Autry and Dr. Arvern Moore, longtime supporters of UNCF and Rust
College; and Mrs. Carolyn Tyson and Mr. Bobby Bonds, longtime members of the UNCF committee. The ladies of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. presented a generous contribution to Rust College and the UNCF, which
helped the campaign to surpass its goal of raising $60,000.

2013 Rust College Spring Visitation Day Nets Hundreds of Guests, Potential Students
Rust College held its annual Spring Visitation Day on Saturday, February 23rd, bringing in more than 600 potential new students
and parents, guardians and counselors. This event provided an overall look at Rust College and gave potential students a chance to
see what the institution had to offer. Guests from high schools in Tennessee, Wisconsin, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Missouri were in
attendance.
Under the direction of Mr. Johnny McDonald, Director of Enrollment
Services, current students called “Junior Recruiters” led guests around
the campus on tours including the dormitories, library, cafeteria and the
recreation center. Guests were also able to speak directly with division
chairpersons, financial aid personnel, professors, and current students to
gain insight on what life at Rust College is about.
“This Visitation Day was the beginning of marketing Rust College,
where guests and potential students could come in and feel the spirit of
Rust College, and see the entire campus engaged - from the students to
the President. In the past, when we have had good attendance on Visita-
tion Day, we have had great enrollment numbers the following fall, so
with this successful Visitation Day, we are projecting a number of 400
new students,” said Mr. McDonald.
“Today, you are shopping for your new house that will carry you to all the dreams you want,” Dr. David L. Beckley told guests.
“Take seriously the choices you make from this day forward because only you can live with those choices. We have a faculty and
staff dedicated to making sure you understand this is the first step in building your house of success. We welcome you to Rust
College.”
The day included performances from the Rust College A’Cappella and Baptist Student Union choirs, the Blue Blazing Marching
Band, the Theatre Build and Greek organizations. Alumnus Percy Bruce of Batesville, class of 1959, was given special recognition
for his continued support and recruitment for Rust College.

QEP Kickoff Preps Students for Accreditation Reaffirmation
Students, faculty, staff and administrators gathered Wednesday, February 27 for the official Quality
Enhancement Plan (QEP) Kickoff held in the McMillan Multi-Purpose Center. The pep rally-style
event was the start to the second part of Rust College’s effort to seek reaffirmation of accreditation
by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS-COC).
“We are going to pass because of your commitment and your support, not only of the QEP,
but of the whole institution,” said Dr. David L. Beckley.
The kickoff featured student leaders Mr. Chase Carr (SGA President) and Ms. Shakaree
Hale (Miss Rust College), as well as entertainment by the Rust College Band, Asianna and
Amber Fenton, who performed an interpretive dance, “Lean On Me”, and Mr. Calvin
Williams, who performed a rap written about the QEP. Students were also treated to per-
formances by Alpha Kappa Alpha, Zeta Phi Beta, Alpha Phi Alpha, and Omega Psi Phi.
“Building Communities Academically for Total Student Success” or B-CATS2 is the topic of the
QEP and will focus on first year students with the goal of improvement in general education
studies, increased service learning and participation, and increased first year retention. Led by Dr.
Kenneth Jones, the Student Support Services staff and the First Year Experience staff encouraged
entire campus to get fully involved with building relationships to produce positive student
outcomes in the classroom and in overall college life.
