The BSW department newsletter "INSTINCTS" was released on 14th September2017,in the
presence of the Principal Dr. S. Raja Samuel, Mrs. P. K. Vathani David, Head of the
Department, faculty members Dr.Thirumagal, Mr.Rufus, Mrs. Sudarmathy, Mr.Xavier Vivek
Jerry and the students of BSW . The Guest of Honour for the day was Mrs. B. Jayshree, Head at
Hindu Media Research centre at MS Swaminathan Research Foundation.The Principal delivered
a speech that was appreciative of the team's efforts. The chief guest spoke about how journalism
and social work, when interrelated, can help in bringing a change to the society. She also
mentioned that as social worker we stand responsible for the spread of information that carries
merit and to be firm in voicing our opinions. The first copy was received by the chief guest
followed by the student representatives of all three years.

Mr.Shiva Kumar of III year BSW successfully did CPR (Cardiopulmonary
resurrection )on a old man and saved his life when he was suffering from severe
chest pain and fell unconscious during his train travel from Tambaram to
Perungaluthur (December)
Mr.Yogeshwaran and his father who run a trust known as “GOOD SERVICE
TRUST” rescued a destitute from Madipakkam and helped him by rehabilitating
him and admitting him in Little Hearts Trust,ECR(October)

STUDY TOUR: BSW III year students went to study tour to Bengaluru during the month of
February 2017.The students visited NGOs, St Josheph College.The students visited the Brain
Museum of NIMHANS, Bannerghatta Biological Park and LalBagh Park. Professor P.K.vathani
and Professor S. Xavier vivek Jerry accompanied the students.
RURAL CAMP.
The BSW 3rd year students went for their rural camp to Sithamalli Village of Kadalore district.
Prof.S.Xavier vivek jerry and Prof.S.Sudarmathy were the camp directors. The students applied
the theories learnt in the classes. They conducted street theatres to create awareness on various
social issues. Students painted the school /class room’s walls and set up the library.
PROJECT FIELD WORK:
II BSW students took an initiative to work with the communities in KODUVELI village of
THIRVALLUR District. They have conducted surveys to study the community. Based on that
they have sensitized the community (Women, Men, Children, Youth, Disability and seniors)
through street theatres, Medical camps, Education.
EXTENSION ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPT (OTHER THAN FIELD WORK)
1. MOU with International Alliance for Prevention of Aids (IAPA)
Summer Volunteer Program (10 students)
The BSW dept takes pride in having broken the stereotypes of education through the IAPA initiative.
IAPA makes way for cultural exchanges as students from the Arizona State University collaborated with
BSW dept, with an aim of creating awareness to schools and colleges.

2. Inter Generational Comerades Project with Dignitary Foundation
The second year BSW students done extension activities as follows;
INTER NATIONAL OLDER PERSONS DAY WITH DIGITARIANS OF DIGNITY FOUNDATION.
The main aim of this programme is to bring the intergenerational bonding between elders ad youngsters.
Dr.Chokalingam, cardiologist talked about HUMAOUR AND HEALTH. Cultural events were jointly
done by the older persons and the students.The Debate team consisted of 2seniors and 2 students debated
on The youth of today - Topic: Are they confused (or) confident? A drama titled “The difference” was
enacted by 2 senior citizens and 6 students. Totally 100 older persons were participated.
MULTI MEDICAL CAMP: Second BSW students conducted the multi medical camp in association
with Dignity foundation and Kavery Hospitals to the older persons living Anna nagar and nearby places.
97 elderly persons were benefitted.
3. KANAVU NAYAGAN:
III BSW students conducted competitions like drawing and oratorical to the Mary Clubwala School
Children in memory of Dr.A.P.J. Abdul Kalam .
4. BASE LINE SURVEY on community based inclusive development programme for persons with
disabilities.28 Second year BSW students conducted the survey of persons with disability living in
Chennai zone 8 in association with German Leprosy Relief association Rehabilitation Fund (GLRA)
5. IDF SLP VOLUNTEER PROGRAMME: Second year students went to Government Higher
Sec.School ,Choolaimedu to take classes.
6. STREET PLAYS: Street plays were conducted on various social issues to create awareness to the
community people. For social service trust for their community-madipakkam, for Port Trust - royapuram
community, for IAPA – International AIDS day
