    Get involved Christmas and New Year waste, recycling and green waste collection

    This year Christmas and New Years Day fall on a Thursday Waste, Recycling and Green Waste Service collection will occur on the following days: Friday 26 December 2014 and Friday 2 January 2015.

    If your collection is normally on a Thursday, it will occur on the Friday, and Fridays collection will take place on the Saturday. This will be the same for the following week commencing Monday 29 December 2014.

    The Waste, Recycling and Green Waste Services will return to normal the week beginning Monday 5 January 2015.

    Council would like to remind all residents of the dangers involved with illegal fi reworks.

    Not only do serious penalties, including fi nes and imprisonment exist for their use, but when used by non-licensed persons they present a very real threat to the people setting them off , and the general public. Every year many people are hospitalised with serious injuries, including burns, eye injuries, and severe hand injuries.

    If you see people setting off illegal fi reworks contact Victoria Police immediately.

    Brimbank City Council Christmas and New Year opening hoursOver the Christmas and New Year period, Council will have changed hours of operation. Normal opening hours will resume on Friday 2 January 2015.

    Municipal Offi ces and Customer Service Centres Sunshine and Keilor municipal offi ces and Brimbanks three Customer Service Centres will close on Wednesday 24 December 2014 at 12noon. Over the Christmas and New Year period the Municipal Offi ces and all Customer Service Centres will open Monday 29, Tuesday 30 and Wednesday 31 December 2014. The Watergardens Customer Service Centre will also open Saturday 27 December 2014 between 10am and 12.30pm. All offi ces and centres will be closed on Thursday 25 and Friday 26 December 2014, as well as Thursday 1 and Monday 26 January 2015. The call centre will operate during municipal offi ce opening hours between 8.45am and 5pm.

    Man arrested over robberiesA St Albans man has been arrested following three robberies in Sunshine and Footscray late last month. Police allege that on November 26 the 27-year-old went to a Footscray car yard and stole a ute. He is then alleged to have attempted to steal items from a delivery van in Sunshine before demanding a woman get out of her car at a Hampshire Road shopping centre. Armed with a knife, he then demanded another driver get out of her car in Devonshire Road. Police then moved in and arrested him. He has been charged with armed robbery and other offences and is being remanded in custody pending a court hearing.

    Mans property investigated Brimbank detectives have arrested a Melton man over a string of offences in November and December. The 30-year-old is accused of committing burglaries in Deer Park and Delahey, and stealing cars and petrol from Tullamarine, Delahey and Bacchus Marsh. He has been remanded in custody as detectives examine his property, which is believed to be linked to other crimes.

    The history of Deer Park has been captured in ceramics, following the unveiling of a mosaic mural in the Deer Park Arcade last Tuesday.

    Gallery Sunshine Everywhere artist Debbi Qadri, who helped direct the community mural, says the work is a loose timeline, which ties in the Wurundjeri Elders history and the areas recent settlement and growth.

    Often when we talk about history we just focus on European settlement, not the 40,000 years of indigenous history that came before it, Ms Qadri said.

    People move into an area and imagine its always been like that, or the extent of it theyll think of is an isolated place with factories, but theres so much more than that.

    The timeline subjects are linked by the flowing river of Kororoit Creek, which

    meanders along the wall. Deer Park was originally named Kororoit Creek by the early settlers, Kororoit being an Aboriginal word meaning male kangaroo.

    The project tied together the art of about 600 pupils from Deer Park West, St Peter Chanel and Deer Park North primary schools, as well as 40 community members and eight historians.

    Although she has more than 20 years experience of creating murals, Ms Qadri said this was a standout experience.

    It wasnt the first time Ive worked on a historical area, but its the first time I looked at it so carefully, she said.

    Brimbank highway patrol is appealing for witnesses to an incident on the Western Ring Road earlier this month that has left a man in hospital.

    Leading Senior Constable Trent Hewet said it was believed the man was looking under the hood of a red Toyota hatchback parked in the left-hand lane on the Western Ring Road, near the Sunshine Avenue on-ramp, about 9.30pm on December 6 when it was struck from behind.

    The man was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital where he remains in a serious condition.

    Leading Senior Constable Hewet said the driver who hit the Toyota stopped at the scene.

    Police are keen to establish if the Toyotas lights were on at the time of the accident. There must be someone who has seen something. Were trying to establish whether he had lights on at the time.

    Anyone with information about the accident is being urged to call Leading Senior Constable Hewet on 9365 3333 or CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000.

    Meanwhile, Brimbank divisional road policing adviser Ross Burbidge said police were conducting a series of operations throughout Brimbank and Melton and would target drivers speeding, using mobile phones, suffering fatigue or not wearing seatbelts during the Christmas-New Year period.

    Derrimuts Brett Russell believes he will face a tough decision choosing a secondary school for his sons, with no high school currently planned for the suburb.

    There are nine prep classes across two primary schools in Derrimut, a figure Mr Russell said highlighted the need for a secondary school.

    The numbers are there, but theres no discussion about the building of a secondary school, he said. The numbers justify the cost, but the foresight is missing.

    Mr Russells eldest son, six-year-old Archer, starts school at St Lawrence Primary next year. Youngest son Reuben is two.

    Its such a great area and it breaks my heart that when the time comes, all the kids friendships and sense of community will be gone, he said. Its sad to know hundreds of kids from Derrimut will never share the fun of walking with their neighbours to high school. Kids of past generations took that for granted.

    The closest secondary schools to Derrimut are Victoria University Secondary School, in St Albans, and Lakeview Senior College, in Caroline Springs, both almost 10 kilometres away.

    Kororoit Labor MP Marlene Kairouz said Derrimut needed a secondary school.

    Ill ask the Department of Education to look at projections and the way forward, she said.

    Lakeview Senior College, which caters for years 10 to 12, is bursting at the seams, with students from three prep to year 9 schools Springside, Creekside and Brookside vying for places each year.

    Last month, Labor pledged to fund the purchase of land for the long-awaited Taylors Hill West senior school, part of an $87 million plan to build 11 new schools.

    The federal Attorney-General, Senator Murphy, will investigate the operations of a firm of solicitors involved in the Deer Park-Evington Holdings estate.

    Sixty families living on the estate must re-finance their homes following the announcement that Evington Holdings Pty. Ltd has gone into receivership.

    Meanwhile, the Commercial Bank of Australia has come to the rescue of some of the owners.

Keilor and Sunshine councils were dissolved and merged to form the new City of Brimbank.

    Hillside musicians David and Chris Agnew and bandmates Adam Mercante, Gavin Zacher and Chrissy Clark are a force to be reckoned with.

    The group of five came together last year to create Ember Rain, a punk-rock alternative band. Already they have won the Melton Battle of the Bands, in August, and the Western Metro FReeZA Battle of the Bands last weekend.

    The quintet will represent the western suburbs in the grand final at the Push at Moomba Festival in March.

    Singer Chrissy Clark, 25, said people were responding to Ember Rain really positively despite their late start. We put the songs together late last year and then weve tried to get them going early this year, Clark said.

    She said the group hit it off straight away and it was their broad range of influences that

    gave them their unique edge. I look up to Avril Lavigne or Hayley Williams. Adams a massive Blink 182, Greenday, Offspring fan. The twins [David and Chris] like the heavier bands Bullet for my Valentine, and Slash; and Gavin is just a mixed bag he likes anything and anyone and at the moment hes massive on Frank Zappa.

    The band is working on a new music video, Young, Free and Dangerous, which will be released early next year. The song explores drink- and-hoon driving and what a person may feel like following anaccident.

    This year, for the first time, CS Square will be hosting a Gift Wrapping Service.

    As part of its commitment to the Community the centre has sponsored several groups including;

    The Caroline Springs RSL, Caroline Springs First Scouts Group, YMCA Open Doors Australia and Strive Hapkio Martial Arts School to bring the initiative to life.

    On 1 December Volunteers from each group commenced to wrap Customers presents. CS Square donated all the gift wrapping requirements to provide a no fuss service. All proceeds will go to each participating group.

    We feel that this is a great way of giving back to the community and helping some of our local groups to raise not only funds but awareness, Milka says.

    The Gift Wrapping Service is located near the Childrens playground at CS Square.

    CS Square was first built in 2004 housing a Coles and approximately 18 specialty stores.

    When the opportunity arose to take the kids (aged seven and 11) to the Grampians for a break during the school holidays, I must admit I was a little hesitant, given the bushfires that ripped through the area in January, destroying nearly 55,000 hectares and 32 houses. But instead of finding a burnt-out forest, we rediscovered the beauty of this incredible mountain range and surrounding area, which is a must-visit at this time of year.

    If youre lucky, like we were, the weather in spring is perfect: warm but not too hot for the amazing walks on offer, and the blossoming native plants all around are something to behold.

    We drove in via the Ararat-Halls Gap road rather than through Stawell and it was well worth it. The sneak peek you get of the eastern side of the Grampians is spectacular and the road is surrounded by endless fields of canola, which were in full bloom, with flowers so bright yellow that they looked painted on.

    As we arrived in Halls Gap, the visitor centre looked to be under some construction, so we continued up the road to the Brambuk Cultural Centre, an impressive showcase that is owned by and pays tribute to the Aboriginal communities that lived on these lands. The centre has all the tourist information you could want.

    MacKenzie Falls is one of Victorias largest waterfalls and one of the most popular spots in the Grampians. The fires that ripped through here might have taken the kiosk, the lookout structures and many of the signs, but the beauty of the waterfall and the regrowth starting to shoot up everywhere are well worth the trip.

    the Walks The walks in the Grampians are truly spectacular and fun for the whole family. We attempted three treks of varying lengths and completed them comfortably, with only a small amount of piggybacking required on the Pinnacle walk. Each is satisfying in its own way and all are covered in blossoming native flowers, with only the MacKenzie Falls walk affected by the fires.

Pent-up demand in the first half ofthe year and a shortage of listings saw prices begin to strengthen, whilstthe second half saw a resurgence in buyer confidence and a strong lift indemand.

    Continued lower interest rates have boosted peoples confidence andadded extra dollars to many in peoples wallets. As a result weve seenclearance rates strengthen this year on the back of increased listingnumbers, first home buyers made a comeback and investors have madetheir presence felt in the market place.
